The St John Ambulance WA has launched a new partnership trial with Surf Life Saving WA to station first responders at popular beaches. The trial will run from January to April 2011 at several beaches along the WA coast. Having trained first responders nearby who can respond quickly to cardiac emergencies could significantly improve survival rates, as the first 10 minutes after a cardiac arrest are critical. The responders will have automated external defibrillators to provide emergency treatment until an ambulance arrives. The trial aims to expand first responder coverage to more beaches in future years.
