                      William Gilmore Simms
William Gilmore Simms was a South Carolina
journalist whose work as a writer and editor on four
historically significant 19th century newspapers was
matched by his fame as a poet, historian, novelist
and short-story writer. Ranked by some critics as
second only to Edgar Allen Poe among Southern
writers in the period before the Civil War, he has
been referred to as the Southern version of James
Fenimore Cooper. By the mid-1840s, Simms’s novels
were so popular that Poe called Simms “the best
novelist which this country has, on the whole,
produced” and “immeasurably the greatest writer
of fiction in America.” When he died on June 11,
1870, his obituary in Harper’s Weekly said, “The
country has lost one more of its time-honored band
of authors, and the South the most consistent andnt
devoted of her literary sons.”
A native of Charleston who studied to be a lawyer,
Simms was publisher and editor of the Charleston
City Gazette and had written six books by age 26.

SCPA Hall of Fame
For more than thirty-five years, the South Carolina Press Association has reviewed applicants for its Hall of Fame. A total of 64
journalists have been selected for inclusion on the basis of their significant contributions to their craft and communities.
The Hall of Fame was started in 1972, when SCPA President William L. Kinney Jr., of Bennettsville, acting on a suggestion from Secretary-
Manager Reid H. Montgomery, set in motion activities that led to the establishment of a South Carolina Press Association Hall of Fame.
Kinney obtained the approval of the SCPA Executive Committee and later the full membership, by a mail ballot. He wanted to make
the first presentations at the 1973 Winter Meeting in Columbia.
At that time, 21 other states had halls of “fame” or “honor.” The reason for the latter designation in a few states was to avoid
confusion with halls of fame for athletes.
John A. Montgomery, then-editor of The Columbia Record, was named by Kinney as chairman of the first SCPA Hall of Fame
Committee. Serving with him were Don Bruner of Lexington, William Chalk of Camden, Hubert Osteen Jr. of Sumter, and Dean
Livingston of Orangeburg.
  The 2010-2011 Hall of Fame Committee members included: John Heath, retired from Beaufort Gazette; Tom McLean, retired from The State;
Pat McNeely, retired from the University of South Carolina's School of Journalism and Louis Sossamon, retired from The Gaffney Ledger.

Lee Enterprises honors The Times and Democrat with President’s Award
“The news sent chills throughout the community and across the country – two toddlers were found
drowned in a car, and their mother was charged with killing them deliberately. The Times and Democrat used
every tool in its arsenal – online, mobile, social networking, multimedia and print – to deliver strong, compre-
hensive coverage immediately and in the days that followed.” The award is shared by Richard Walker, Larry
Hardy, Christopher Huff, Gene Crider, Dionne Gleaton, Dale Linder-Altman, Gene Zaleski and Kristin Coker.

  • 10. Hall of Fame 2011 Honoree William Gilmore Simms William Gilmore Simms was a South Carolina journalist whose work as a writer and editor on four historically significant 19th century newspapers was matched by his fame as a poet, historian, novelist and short-story writer. Ranked by some critics as second only to Edgar Allen Poe among Southern writers in the period before the Civil War, he has been referred to as the Southern version of James Fenimore Cooper. By the mid-1840s, Simms’s novels were so popular that Poe called Simms “the best novelist which this country has, on the whole, produced” and “immeasurably the greatest writer of fiction in America.” When he died on June 11, 1870, his obituary in Harper’s Weekly said, “The country has lost one more of its time-honored band of authors, and the South the most consistent andnt devoted of her literary sons.” A native of Charleston who studied to be a lawyer, Simms was publisher and editor of the Charleston City Gazette and had written six books by age 26. His most significant contribution to South Carolina journalism came during the Civil War. As associate 1806 - 1870 editor of the Daily South Carolinian, Simms was one which had been moved to Charleston. • 11. SCPA Hall of Fame For more than thirty-five years, the South Carolina Press Association has reviewed applicants for its Hall of Fame. A total of 64 journalists have been selected for inclusion on the basis of their significant contributions to their craft and communities. The Hall of Fame was started in 1972, when SCPA President William L. Kinney Jr., of Bennettsville, acting on a suggestion from Secretary- Manager Reid H. Montgomery, set in motion activities that led to the establishment of a South Carolina Press Association Hall of Fame. Kinney obtained the approval of the SCPA Executive Committee and later the full membership, by a mail ballot. He wanted to make the first presentations at the 1973 Winter Meeting in Columbia. At that time, 21 other states had halls of “fame” or “honor.” The reason for the latter designation in a few states was to avoid confusion with halls of fame for athletes. John A. Montgomery, then-editor of The Columbia Record, was named by Kinney as chairman of the first SCPA Hall of Fame Committee. Serving with him were Don Bruner of Lexington, William Chalk of Camden, Hubert Osteen Jr. of Sumter, and Dean Livingston of Orangeburg. The 2010-2011 Hall of Fame Committee members included: John Heath, retired from Beaufort Gazette; Tom McLean, retired from The State; Pat McNeely, retired from the University of South Carolina's School of Journalism and Louis Sossamon, retired from The Gaffney Ledger.
