One of Utamaro's innovations was the dramatic okubi-e, literally 'large head pictures,' featuring close-up portraits of beautiful women. This print is from a series entitled Nangoku bijin awase, or 'Beauties of the South' showing famously attractive women from Shinagawa, southwest of Tokyo. The woman's fan depicts a scene of Shinagawa Bay.

The background in this print owes its delicate shimmering quality to mica, a reflective metal oxide. Mica was finely ground, mixed with adhesive, and then applied to the paper, often with a stencil and brush. Occasionally the mica was colored with the addition of pigment to create a pink or gray background, but here the mica was left white. Mica backgrounds were popular from around 1793. They were later replaced with printed gray backgrounds because the mica surface tended to scratch or crack easily.

\r\nRepository: The Minneapolis Institute of ArtsCreator: KRITIOS, first half 5th c. 25. Creator: Gandharan\r\nTitle: Buddha\r\nWork Type: Sculpture\r\nDate: Kushan period, late 2nd-early 3rd century\r\nLocation: Pakistan, Gandhara area\r\nMaterial: Phyllite\r\nMeasurements: H. 72 in. (182.9 cm)\r\nDescription: Full view\r\nDescription: Most of the earliest known images of Buddhas and other Buddhist deities were produced in northwest India during the Kushan period about six hundred years after the religion was founded. The Kushans descendants of nomads from various parts of Central Asia had settled in parts of Bactria to the northwest of India and ultimately used this stronghold to form an empire that included eastern Parthia the Kabul Valley the Gandhara region of present-day Pakistan and parts of Kashmir and northern India. Although the exact dates of the Kushan period remain controversial it is now generally agreed that the 1st through 3rd centuries CE encompass the height of their rule.
There were two major centers of Kushan culture each with its distinctive style: art from the region of Gandhara shows the impact of Hellenistic and Roman sculpture owing in part to the sustained effect of Alexander the Great in that part of the world while art from the city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh displays a traditional Indian aesthetic. Whereas Gandharan art had a strong influence on early Buddhist art in Central Asia and is also briefly reflected in the earliest Chinese Buddhist material Mathuran art had a more profound impact on the development of Buddhist art in India and Southeast Asia.

This large standing Buddha which can be dated to the late 2nd or early 3rd century typifies the art of Gandhara. The Buddha wears the traditional garments of an Indian monk: a long cloth known as a dhoti wrapped around the waist is covered by a large shawl draped over his shoulders a portion of which is held in his left hand. The hem of the skirtlike dhoti is lower than that of the shawl helping to distinguish the two garments. Western prototypes are evident in the series of thick heavy folds that obscure the underlying physique as well as the treatment of the Buddha's facial features and his wavy hair. Similarly his posture with a slight sway to the right is reminiscent of the contrapposto position often found in the art of ancient Greece and Rome.

At the same

All three shared an interest in popular culture that arose partly as a reaction to the grand existential claims made by abstract expressionist artists and critics. Despite their similarities of subject and process, Warhol tended to concentrate on the iconic and the repetitive, while Rauschenberg sought to include as large a slice of the messy and rich condition of contemporary American life as he could.</pCreator: Peter Paul Rubens\r\nTitle: Venus Before a Mirror\r\nWork Type: painting\r\nDate: 1614-1615\r\nMaterial: oil on wood\r\nMeasurements: 124 x 98 cm\r\nRepository: Liechtenstein Museum (Vienna, Austria)\r\nCollection: Art, Archaeology and Architecture (Erich Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archives)\r\nSource: Image and original data provided by Erich Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archives/ART RESOURCE, N.Y.\r\nSource: http://www.artres.com/c/htm/Home.aspx\r\nSource: http://www.artres.com/c/htm/TreePfLight.aspx?ID=LES\r\n.
