- Learning Management System ( LMS ), So what is it? Why do educators need an LMS system?
- Topic Clarification Script This presentation will address the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) in a broad range of educational contexts ranging from the Early Childhood sector right up to Adult education. LMS is an online learning tool that can be used for a varying range of purposes. Ellis (2009) describes the software application as valuable for “administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content” (Ellis, 2009, as cited at http://www.astd.org/NR/rdonlyres). The tool is extensive in its ability to deliver learning content and can be set up according to the varying needs of the user. The learning management system can be viewed as the commencement of any e-learning or blended learning program. The LMS provides value to education by providing a means to sequence of learning content and creates a manageable structure for educators and administrative personal.
- For example, the Learning Management System manages, tracks and reports on interaction between the learner and the content & the learner and the educator and performs learners registration, tracks learners progress, record test scores, and indicate course completions, and finally allows the educator to assess the performance of their learners.
- The Learning Management Systems are tools that make the components of teaching and the learning process easier with the integration of technology and meets the expectations in different situations in accordance with the needs of both learners and educators.
- The learning management system assists in the development and enhancement of learners learning skills whilst at the same time improves the access and broadens participation by creating a more interactive and online learning environment for both educators and learners. With the incorporation of a learning management system learners develop the required skills in learning information that prepares them for 21st Century technology. As educators we need to take on board that by using a learning management system this will assist us in the management of our online courses so that educators can create, add, modify, customise, and reuse digital course content and learning objects As educators through professional learning and development we should recognise that 21st century technology is impacting on everyone and everything in which we come in contact with. We are constantly being bombarded with technological changes and as educators we must embrace the transformation of learning and teaching techniques in order to prepare our learners for global learning. The educational methods that we were accustom to in our schooling days need to be discarded. However, I believe that a majority of educators still reflect back on how they were educated to the extent that they continuously incorporate and teach the equivalent learning methods that have been around for decades, if not longer.
- For the 21st century learners educators need to open the doors for their learners and their learning perspectives.
- As educators for the future we need to focus on engaging learners and the people that are associated with learning and educate all that are associated with learning on the influences that drive the world today and how theses influences contribute to the dramatic changes of how we live and work in the 21st century.
