iPhone Marketing tips from the creator of the #1 iPhone App Review website. I gave this presentation at the iPhone App Developers Meetup in Silicon Valley, May 2009.
6. Creating a brand
• Figure out what is unique
about what you are doing.
• Don’t let something else
define your style.

20. Twitterrific 2.0
• Started out as the best iPhone Twitter Client on the market.
• Got passed up by a few other apps that included extra
features.
• Twitterrific dominates once again because they spent more
time developing and improving on usability.
28. App Reviews
• Gets your app in front of their viewers.
• Gets you a quote to use in your ad copy.
• Gets you better search engine response.
• Will spike your sales in the short term.
29. A good app review is like a PR
piece, it’s only good so long as
people are looking at it.
35. Go beyond the normal
• Go beyond creating a twitter account for your app
• Go beyond setting up a facebook fan page
• Go beyond submitting for an app review
36. Going beyond the normal gives
everybody something to talk
about. Even the app reviewers.
37. My frustrations as an app
reviewer.
• Many apps are very similar which makes them hard to talk
about.
• Many apps have a poor UI which makes it hard to feel good
while using it.
• Many developers just release an app and give no direction
to the reviewers.
Brands get noticed.
If you are serious about making some money marketing your product you need to show that your product is sitting on a strong platform.
It is so easy to copy somebody else.
The only way to come up with something truly unique is to base it off of what inspires you and include your passions.
You should have somewhere for people to go before you launch your app.
A good website provides...
The app store does not provide amble space to explain anything...
Demo your product. Show it in the wild.
Allows you to personalize it and make it real. An app is nothing more then a lifeless product with out something behind it. Why do you think Coca Cola puts so much emphasis on the experience that comes with enjoying a cold Coca Cola beverage?
Search engines.
Landing page for Plate Pursuit - fun game...
Google search - you are leaving it up to others to describe your product and brand first.
Thankfully for them, my website is the first listing, so they are in good hands.
They would have been better off just linking to a google search result such as this.
Here are a few more things a brand does for a product.
Thought there are other good iphone twitter clients out there the best overall experience is Twitterrific.
Twitterrific makes me feel good when I use it the same way I feel better about driving a luxury car as opposed to an entry level compact.
I’m talking about the product experience.

A brand sticks to their goal and produces based on their original intent. If you start out as an apple don’t change to an orange because you think that is what people want. Find ways to shine your apple.
Don’t release an update because a new small feature comes out. They release major updates that improve the overall experience and make more people want to buy.
Lastly, getting noticed.
App reviews are a great way to get your name out there quick and generate some hype for your product but it will not last.
App reviews and press releases are good but people only look at those once. If they do not decide to buy at that time then you need to find a way to get in their way.
You are in the drivers seat.
