This document summarizes and compares several artworks:
- Ai Weiwei's Sunflower Seeds sculpture made of porcelain seeds and El Anatsui's Dusasa II sculpture made of bottle caps both use repetition of common objects on a large scale.
- Jessica Downs was inspired by their use of repetition and how the works blend together from a distance despite being made of distinct parts.
- Richard Tuttle's minimalist paintings and a Chinese scroll both feature a central image surrounded by color.
2. Ai Weiwei
• The process and intent
that Ai Weiwei uses
included minimal
means. His piece of
work uses sarcasm,
juxtaposition and
repetition.
•
Information:
– Sunflower Seeds
– Ai Weiwei
– 2010
– Porcelain, paint, 100 million sunflower
seeds
– Dimensions variable
3. My Response
• My reaction to Ai Weiwei’s
Sunflower seeds, was that
something so distinguished when
see alone or up close looked so
different when put together with
the same object over 100 million
times
• The ideas and qualities that
inspired my response were the
repetition that was used and the
choice of composition material.
The sunflower seeds are well
known up close but from far away
they all blend together.

4. Book Relation
• The connection that the
book and piece of
artwork I show both
include repetition and a
look of a continuing
space. Both pieces have
minimal colors used and
create patterns that
makes the compositions
cohesive.

5. El Anatsui
• El Anatsui’s process and
intent consisted of a free
and flexible aspect. The
images were colorful and
densely packed bottle caps
that were put together and
organized to reflect
moments in history.
•
Information
– Dusasa II
– El Anatsui
– 2007
– Aluminum liquor bottle caps and
copper wire
– 240 x 240 x 6 inches
6. My Response
• My reaction to El Anatsui’s
piece was that I thought it was
innovative to use common
object like bottle caps to form
a piece that can reflect an
historical event by the
movement created by the
placement of the caps
• The ideas and qualities that
inspired me include using the
similar techniques of creating
movement throughout my
piece

7. Book Relation
• The connection that El
Anatsui’s composition
and the Column of Trajan
have in common are that
up close they both have a
lot of detail and differ in
the same images.
However, from far away
both piece look like one
flow of movement.

8. Richard Tuttle
• The process and intent
that Richard Tuttle had
was that there was a part
in the audience that can’t
see part of the image. His
pieces were simplistic and
they manipulated space.

• My reaction to Richard
Tuttle’s composition was
that the color use was
intriguing as well as the
simple design of the
painting.
• The ideas and qualities that
inspired me included the
use of warm colors and the
placement of my
composition

10. Book Relation
• The connection that Richard
Tuttle’s composition has to
Cheng Sixiao’s composition
is that the images are in the
middle of the composition
and they are both simplistic
for the audience to
understand but at the same
time have color surrounding
the main image
