In what ways does your
media product develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
Our horror trailer was influenced by
the 2012 film “The Possession” in this
film the main character is also a small
innocent girl who discovers an object
which takes control of her and causes
paranormal happenings.
In our trailer, the girl is possessed by
a demon doll who wished, like the box
in the possession, to escape its
confinement within the object and uses
the child as a way of getting free.
We followed the basic conventions of a
horror trailer, it begins slow and gradually
picks up speed and tension to create a
dramatic climax. We also followed the
idea of something popping up at the end
of the trailer to frighten the audience as
they believe it is over. Other horror
trailers which have done this are sinister.
Many horror films today follow the
same genre type of “paranormal
activity” however we have broken that
convention as it is not the house that is
haunted but the object which she
carries with her, so not everything
takes place within the house but also
happens elsewhere.
When the girl is positioning herself in
abnormal ways we took this idea from
films such as
“The Last Exorcism”. We believe this is
effective as possessions are usually
associated with demons taking control of
the body and making it do things which it
shouldn't, making it disturbing but also
scary.
This convention of horror films was also
used by “The Exorcist” in 1973. This
proves that this conventions has been
effective because it has carried on for so
many years which means many horror
films still use this in order to scare their
audience but also excite them.
In conclusion
Overall, we believe that we have mostly
followed conventions and forms of real
media products such as effects, camera
shots and the layout of a typical horror
trailer. The only contrast to this is that we
have not followed the leading style of
horrors today such as paranormal activity
which means that we are giving the
audience something different to watch.
