8. Student Résumé – Assignment #3 Assigned Week 5
Your résumé should always be tailored to the specific position and group/company to which you are applying. In
addition, you should consider that some education, experiences, and recognitions may be more important for one
position than another.
Above all, it is vital that you are honest in the information that you share on a résumé. Using descriptive language to
explain roles and responsibilities is encouraged; embellishing or lying about experience that you do not possess will not
present you in a positive light.
Education
What is your major? If you have a minor, list it here:
What is your current GPA? When do you expect to graduate (Month/Year)?
Work Experience
Not everyone will have work experience; if you do have prior work experience or have a current job on campus, you
should list it on your résumé. It is also helpful to keep a list of past employers with addresses, dates of employment, and
phone numbers, as many applications will ask for detailed information in order to check the information that you have
provided in your résumé.
Employer: Address:
Dates of Employment: Phone Number:
Description of Duties:
You can also use this format for past internships; it is vital to provide an honest and succinct description of your roles
and responsibilities. You should list this information for every past job; however, once you have more life/work
experience, most employers will only expect a history of 7-10 years, depending upon the relevance of past employment.
Community Service and Activities
Often, community service and civic engagement opportunities provide excellent experience that demonstrates key skills
to prospective employers. If you are a regular volunteer with a specific organization or you are part of a group that
regularly interacts with the community in planning and presenting events, that information should be part of your
résumé. You should also list any campus activities and roles that demonstrate your skills and abilities.
Name of organization/event: Date(s) of service:
Description of service/event:
Finally, consider any references that you may have. References are people with whom a prospective employer can speak
regarding your employment history, your work ethic, your willingness to learn new tasks, and your overall demeanor in a
personal or professional environment. References may be past employers, instructors, or community service
supervisors. Always ask before listing someone as a reference; not asking is considered extremely unprofessional. You
may consider keeping references on a page separate from your résumé, depending upon the situation.
