- 1 minute-Self-Portraits 1889. In this piece we can see that the artist is not well. Van Gogh was a very disturbed man after being put out by the love of his life. He went mad and cut off his left ear and gave it to a woman named Rachel with a note that said, “Keep this object carefully.” It is interesting to see in this photo though that the artist has painted himself with his right ear bandaged. It begs the question if he was looking in the mirror while painting himself.
- 1 minute Van Gogh painted this piece called Sunflowers, which was a series of paintings, after his hospitalization for his ear. He painted many different versions of these sunflowers. In this piece of art his technique shows bright colors to show vivacity. There are also wilting flowers to show a mixture of life and death. Both extremes of life and death are presented. It shows that all living things are tied together. The flowing wilted steams and the burst of lovely yellow draws ones attention around the painting, without disrupting the balance of the piece. These paintings are often duplicated but never reach the pure power of Van Gogh's.
- 1 minute Soon Van Gogh began having delusions and was admitted to an asylum. While he was there he painted Starry Night. Thinking about universal concerns and his own destiny. Foreground dark is cypress trees usually found in cemetaries. He has these he because he was constantly concerned with eternity and death. The village is quiet in the middle of the night with much energy of clouds above. Van Gogh saw death as the destination of lifes journey.
- 1 minute Believed you had to master drawing before filling it in with colors. This piece is also known as At Eternity’s Gate. This began as a drawing, or lithograph, in 1882. and Van Gogh filled it with color to bring it to life. Here we have an old man depicted slumped in a wooden chair crying by his fireplace. Everything around him is hard and uncomfortable, even the floor and walls. The fireplace seems to be what the old man is longing for, some warmth and affection, but it just does not seem to get bright enough for him. What this picture ultimately relates to is Van Gogh’s condition at this time. He was having seizures before his death and this is how he felt. Shortly after painting this piece Van Gogh shot himself at the age of 37
