2. A Common Mistake
• Too many people spend hours writing points
on their powerpoint, but they don’t rehearse
properly.
“If you fail to prepare, you are prepared to fail”
Rehearse
your
presentation
properly.
4. How to rehearse properly
• Plan to rehearse
your presentation
out loud at least 4
times. (Give
yourself enough
time)
• Rehearse against
the clock to change
for the time limit.
5. How to rehearse properly
• Take a leaf out of
Winston Churchill’s
book – memorize
your script.
• Video or tape record
yourself.
6. Mr Jim’s Tips
• “Don’t read from your
slides – that’s
probably the worst
thing you can do.”
• “Plan to finish the
preparation early – so
you will have time to
rehearse.”
• “DO NOT rehearse
during class!”
7. THE RULE OF THREE
“We remember three
things…”
- Aristotle
8. The audience remembers three
things…
• So plan what they will be – choose the three
primary messages of your presentation.
• Change your presentation to fit them.
• Remember, if there are three parts of a body,
you should put them in the right order –
interesting first, informative second, and
important for the grand finale.
9. The audience remembers three
things…
• Use lists of three
whenever you can in
your presentation.
– For example, three
examples, three
steps, or three
further reading links.
10. Less is More
Treike: “So, Mr Jim, what do we
do if we have four points
instead of three?”
Mr Jim: “Cut one out. Your
audience won’t
remember it anyway.”
No-one ever complained of a presentation being too short…
11. Presentation Essentials
1. USE VISUAL AIDS WHERE YOU CAN.
2. REHEARSE, REHEARSE, REHEARSE.
3. THE AUDIENCE WILL ONLY REMEMBER THREE
MESSAGES.
12. “She said I was
skinny, I had no
spine and I had no
guts…”
“Well, she was
right about the
last part…”
IN THREE WORDS…
