2. Highly Valued by a Worthy
ManLuk 7:1-5 ESV After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the
people, he entered Capernaum. (2) Now a centurion had a servant who
was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. (3)
When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews,
asking him to come and heal his servant. (4) And when they came to
Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have
you do this for him, (5) for he loves our nation, and he is the one who
built us our synagogue."
Servant – (doulos) a slave in its fullest extent.
Servant Sick to the point of death.
Servant Highly Valued by a Worthy Centurion.
Centurion Worthy Because of his love of Israel…
3. The term, "proselytes of the gate", was
derived from the frequently occurring
description in the law of the stranger that
is within, Exo_20:10; etc. "Converts of
thy gates"; this class were not bound by
circumcision, and the other special laws
of the Mosaic code. It is doubtful,
however, whether the distinction made in
the Talmud ever really existed. (Smith’s
Bible Dictionary)
A Worthy Man?
Likely this Roman Centurion, like
Cornelius of Acts 10 was a “proselyte of
the gate”
4. Eph 2:13-15 ESV But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off
have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (14) For he himself is
our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his
flesh the dividing wall of hostility (15) by abolishing the law of
commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in
himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,
5. Act 10:28 ESV And he said to them,
"You yourselves know how unlawful it is
for a Jew to associate with or to visit
anyone of another nation, but God has
shown me that I should not call any
person common or unclean.
A Worthy Man?
Act 10:22 ESV And they said, "Cornelius,
a centurion, an upright and God-fearing
man, who is well spoken of by the whole
Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel
to send for you to come to his house and to
hear what you have to say."
Luk 7:4-5 ESV And when
they came to Jesus, they
pleaded with him earnestly,
saying, "He is worthy to have
you do this for him, (5) for
he loves our nation, and he is
the one who built us our
synagogue."
6. An Unworthy Authority
Luk 7:6-8 ESV And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from
the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble
yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. (7)
Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let
my servant be healed. (8) For I too am a man set under authority, with
soldiers under me: and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another,
'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."
The Centurion Knew Jesus
Man is not Worthy
A man of Authority knew the Authority of Jesus
7. A Worthy Authority
Do You Know Jesus?
Joh 14:6-7 ESV Jesus said to him, "I am the
way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to
the Father except through me. (7) If you had
known me, you would have known my Father
also. From now on you do know him and have
seen him."

10. A Worthy Authority
Do You Know Jesus?
No Man is Worthy
Romans 3:10; 23
Rev 5:3-5 ESV And no one in heaven or on earth
or under the earth was able to open the scroll or
to look into it, (4) and I began to weep loudly
because no one was found worthy to open the
scroll or to look into it. (5) And one of the
elders said to me, "Weep no more; behold, the
Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has
conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its
seven seals."
11. A Worthy Authority
Do You Know Jesus?
No Man is Worthy
2Co 5:21 ESV For our sake he made him to be
sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might
become the righteousness of God.
The Authority of Jesus
Mat 28:18-20 ESV And Jesus came and said to
them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me. (19) Go therefore and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all
that I have commanded you. And behold, I am
with you always, to the end of the age."
12. Talk About Faith
Luk 7:9-10 ESV When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him,
and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, "I tell you, not even in
Israel have I found such faith." (10) And when those who had been sent
returned to the house, they found the servant well.
Mat 7:28-29 ESV And when Jesus finished these sayings, the
crowds were astonished at his teaching, (29) for he was teaching
them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
13. Talk About Faith
Mat 8:10-13 ESV When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those
who followed him, "Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found
such faith. (11) I tell you, many will come from east and west and
recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of
heaven, (12) while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the
outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth." (13) And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; let it be done for you
as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment.
Mar 16:15-16 ESV And he said to them, "Go into all the world and
proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. (16) Whoever believes and is
baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
