4. We Have Such a Priest
Heb 8:1-3 ESV Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have
such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the
Majesty in heaven, (2) a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that
the Lord set up, not man. (3) For every high priest is appointed to offer
gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have
something to offer.
Throne of Majesty: Majesty – Greatness of appearance; dignity;
grandeur; dignity of aspect or manner; the quality or state of a person or
thing which inspires awe or reverence in the beholder; applied with
peculiar propriety to God and his works. (Webster’s 1828).
5. We Have Such a Priest
A Minister in the Holy Places
Heb 8:2 ESV a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord
set up, not man.
2Co 5:1 ESV For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is
destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands,
eternal in the heavens.
Heb 12:2 ESV looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,
who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the
shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
6. We Have Such a Priest
Every High Priest is Appointed to Offer Gifts & Sacrifices
Heb 8:3 ESV For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and
sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to
offer.
Joh 3:16
Rom 5:6-10 ESV For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ
died for the ungodly. (7) For one will scarcely die for a righteous
person--though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die--
(8) but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us. (9) Since, therefore, we have now been justified by
his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
(10) For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the
death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be
saved by his life.
7. A Covenant Enacted Upon Better
PromisesHeb 8:4-7 ESV Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all,
since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. (5) They
serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was
about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, "See that you
make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the
mountain." (6) But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as
much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better,
since it is enacted on better promises. (7) For if that first covenant had
been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
Man Needed a Better Covenant
Old Law Faulty
1. Old Law could not completely forgive.
2. The Law needed a more pure sacrifice
8. A Covenant Enacted Upon Better
PromisesHeb 9:13-14 ESV For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling
of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification
of the flesh, (14) how much more will the blood of Christ, who through
the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our
conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
9. A New Covenant
Heb 8:8-13 ESV For he finds fault with them when he says: "Behold,
the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new
covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, (9) not
like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took
them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not
continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares
the Lord. (10) For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of
Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their
minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they
shall be my people. (11) And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor
and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know
me, from the least of them to the greatest. (12) For I will be merciful
toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." (13) In
speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is
becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
10. A New Covenant
Heb 10:15-17 ESV And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for
after saying, (16) "This is the covenant that I will make with them after
those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and
write them on their minds," (17) then he adds, "I will remember their
sins and their lawless deeds no more."
They Shall Be My People
11. A New Covenant
They Shall Be My People
2Co 6:14-18 ESV Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For
what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship
has light with darkness? (15) What accord has Christ with Belial? Or
what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? (16) What
agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of
the living God; as God said, "I will make my dwelling among them and
walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
(17) Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says
the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, (18) and
I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says
the Lord Almighty."
12. A New Covenant
He Makes the First Covenant Obsolete
Col 2:12-17 ESV having been buried with him in baptism, in which you
were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God,
who raised him from the dead. (13) And you, who were dead in your
trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together
with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, (14) by canceling the
record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set
aside, nailing it to the cross. (15) He disarmed the rulers and authorities
and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. (16)
Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and
drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. (17)
These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to
Christ.
13. A New Covenant
The Old Covenant Fades Away
Heb 8:13 ESV In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one
obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to
vanish away.
Joh 1:14-17 ESV And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and
we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of
grace and truth. (15) (John bore witness about him, and cried out, "This
was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me,
because he was before me.'") (16) And from his fullness we have all
received, grace upon grace. (17) For the law was given through Moses;
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
