Lesson Text:
John 8:1-11
2. Go and Sin No More
Should John 7:53- John 8:11 be included as scripture?
[This section is wanting in nearly all older manuscripts, but Jerome (A. D. 346-420) says that in
his time it was contained in "many Greek and Latin manuscripts," and these must have been as
good or better than the best manuscripts we now possess. But whether we regard it as part of
John's narrative or not, scholars very generally accept it as a genuine piece of history.]

3. Marching Orders
1. Ever been given Marching Orders?
2. Go means: “YOU GO!” (Matthew 28:19,20; Mark 16:15-16)
3. Go implies a direction
4. Caught In Sin
Joh 8:1-4 ESV but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. (2) Early in the morning he came again to
the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. (3) The scribes and the
Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst (4)
they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.
Adultery -- “[one] who has unlawful intercourse [fornication] with the spouse of another,"
Mat 19:4-9 NKJV And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made
them at the beginning 'MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,' (5) and said, 'FOR THIS
REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS
WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH' ? (6) So then, they are no longer two
but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." (7) They said to
Him, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" (8)
He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your
wives, but from the beginning it was not so. (9) And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife,
except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her
who is divorced commits adultery."
5. Caught In Sin
Joh 8:6 ESV This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against
him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.
Mat 22:17-18 ESV Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" (18)
But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?
Their Motives were not Righteous
6. Caught In Sin
We All have Sinned; Romans 3:23, and all deserve Death; Romans 6:23.
Many even in the Lord’s church have such a divisive spirit.
Divisive Attitudes
7. What Do You Say?
Joh 8:5-8 ESV Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?" (6) This they said to test him, that they might have
some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger
on the ground. (7) And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to
them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at
her." (8) And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.
Lev 20:10 ESV "If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and
the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
Deu 22:22 ESV "If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the
man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you shall purge the evil from Israel.
First Question, Where was the Man?
Joh 1:16-17 ESV And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. (17) For the law
was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Him Who is without Sin?
9. Jesus Not Sent to
CondemnJoh 8:9-11 ESV But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning
with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before
him. (10) Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no
one condemned you?" (11) She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither
do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more."
Where are the Accusers
(Sinners)?
Rom 3:10-12 ESV as it is written: "None is righteous, no,
not one; (11) no one understands; no one seeks for God.
(12) All have turned aside; together they have become
worthless; no one does good, not even one."
10. Jesus Not Sent to
CondemnJoh 3:16-17 ESV "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life. (17) For God did not send his Son into the world
to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Mat 26:28 ESV for this is my blood of
the covenant, which is poured out for
many for the forgiveness of sins.
Luk 19:10 ESV For the Son of Man came to
seek and to save the lost."
Make no mistake the woman was LOST, just as we all have
been at some point in our lives.
11. Jesus Not Sent to
Condemn
From Now on SIN NO MORE.
Act 2:37-41 ESV Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and
the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" (38) And Peter said to them, "Repent
and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,
and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (39) For the promise is for you and for your
children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself." (40)
And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, "Save
yourselves from this crooked generation." (41) So those who received his word were
baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
