Why are We Educators?
We are here for the
children, because we
believe we can make a
positive difference in their
lives.
How We Respond to Our
Challenges at Hale Kula
 Students are transient and come in at all times of
the school year. We have a transition program
which ensures that all students and their families
are welcome. Some teachers have included a
classroom orientation slide show on their
classroom web page.
 Students may be impacted by a parent’s
deployment or training schedule. We have 4
counselors and a PSAP child associate who work
with students individually or in small groups to
address concerns.
Challenges Continued . . .
 Students may have gaps in their learning as a
result of being in several different schools before
coming to HKES. We have a strong Response to
Intervention program which tracks student
progress and provides early interventions prior
to referral.
 Parents may have a negative view of Hawaii’s
public school system. We do the best we can to
work with and communicate with our parents to
ensure student success in our classroom.

 Students may have social, emotional, or
behavioral needs that impact their success in
school. We have a strong system of support:
a school-wide Positive Behavior Support
system and implementation ofTribes; 4
counselors and a School-Based Health
Therapist; and a partnership with the
complex psychologist andTriplerArmy
Medical Center

can be challenging. We communicate in
many different ways: Wednesday Folder,
school website (www.halekula.k12.hi.us),
classroom website, Hale Kula Highlights

conference (9/9/13 to 9/13/13), Student-led
conference (2/10/14 to 2/14/14), Facebook
page (join Hale Kula Eagles), and
communication from teachers and other staff

Get into your 4 or 5-man teams. Listen to

1. Build the tallest freestanding structure.
2. The entire marshmallow must be on top.

5. You will have 18 minutes to complete your
task

 Your group has 1 hour to review the
information in the Opening of the SchoolYear
Packet.
 At the end of the hour, discuss what you read
and what was most important to you.

The Afternoon
 Watch required videos.
 Copy machine training – strongly suggested
that all teachers sign up and attend (15
minute blocks)
 Complete summer assignment if you have
submitted it already.
Schedule for the Rest of the
Week
 Wednesday, July 31 – Breakfast at 7:30 in the
cafeteria, teacher work day
New student/parent orientation , 3:00 in the
cafeteria with class list postings to follow at
4:00
 Thursday, August 1 –Training on EES and
SLOs in the cafeteria with Jan, 8:00-12:00;
Meet and Greet event from 2:00-3:00.
 Friday, August 2 –Teacher-directed day;
grade levels to determine the agenda.

Hale Kula Elementary School Administration Day Highlights

  • 1. ADMINISTRATION DAY JULY 30, 2013 Hale Kula Elementary School
  • 2. Our Theme for this Year: Making Connections, Building Relationships
  • 4. Why are We Educators? We are here for the children, because we believe we can make a positive difference in their lives.
  • 5. How We Respond to Our Challenges at Hale Kula  Students are transient and come in at all times of the school year. We have a transition program which ensures that all students and their families are welcome. Some teachers have included a classroom orientation slide show on their classroom web page.  Students may be impacted by a parent’s deployment or training schedule. We have 4 counselors and a PSAP child associate who work with students individually or in small groups to address concerns.
  • 6. Challenges Continued . . .  Students may have gaps in their learning as a result of being in several different schools before coming to HKES. We have a strong Response to Intervention program which tracks student progress and provides early interventions prior to referral.  Parents may have a negative view of Hawaii’s public school system. We do the best we can to work with and communicate with our parents to ensure student success in our classroom.
  • 7. Challenges Continued . . .  Students may have social, emotional, or behavioral needs that impact their success in school. We have a strong system of support: a school-wide Positive Behavior Support system and implementation ofTribes; 4 counselors and a School-Based Health Therapist; and a partnership with the complex psychologist andTriplerArmy Medical Center
  • 8. Challenges Continued . . .  Communication with our school community can be challenging. We communicate in many different ways: Wednesday Folder, school website (www.halekula.k12.hi.us), classroom website, Hale Kula Highlights (hkeshighlights.blogspot.com), P/T conference (9/9/13 to 9/13/13), Student-led conference (2/10/14 to 2/14/14), Facebook page (join Hale Kula Eagles), and communication from teachers and other staff

  • 17. The Afternoon  Watch required videos.  Copy machine training – strongly suggested that all teachers sign up and attend (15 minute blocks)  Complete summer assignment if you have submitted it already.
  • 18. Schedule for the Rest of the Week  Wednesday, July 31 – Breakfast at 7:30 in the cafeteria, teacher work day New student/parent orientation , 3:00 in the cafeteria with class list postings to follow at 4:00  Thursday, August 1 –Training on EES and SLOs in the cafeteria with Jan, 8:00-12:00; Meet and Greet event from 2:00-3:00.  Friday, August 2 –Teacher-directed day; grade levels to determine the agenda.
