Microsoft currently operates 12 data centers globally using 70 megawatts of power, with plans to expand to 20 data centers using 180 megawatts by 2010. Their online services authenticate over 1 billion Windows Live IDs per day with over 500 million active users. Microsoft is extending their existing software and platforms to the cloud through a hybrid model called Software plus Services (S+S) that allows users control over deployment choices while gaining the benefits of cloud computing.
