DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 7 JOSH KIM 8304548
2. • Recent rises in interest in animation within architecture operates within contemporary work
where buildings involve movement, use of curvilinearity
• Example 1 – Mould of a tap handle being deformed and manipulated by string and wire
• Material appeared sensitive to conditions with which it engages
• The process shows how an emergent form and emergent texture developed
• Most important quality (for testing material) is the capacity for the dominant force (mould) t
o be affected by that with which it engages – need to be manipulated
• Peter Eisenman – pitfall was that modern architecture tried to capture the spirit of the age
rather than displacing it and being critical and building upon the currently feeling, instead of
just commenting?
• Diagrams or experiments become more of an engine in the project rather than something
which transforms itself into a physical reality’ – therefore we shouldn’t look at these
experiments in such a simple way as to extract planning or dominant forms from them but let
then fuel the project
EMERGENCE – READING 3 WEEK 7 JOSH KIM 8304548
Ednie-Brown – The Will To Animation
3. • Design of a large scale multi – residential project in China, project was about maximising the
sunlight conditions for each apartment
• Focus on single condition – sunshine and on primary shape – cube
• Process of designing is not entirely a result of conscious activity, logic is helpful for analysis of
requirements but often enough solution seems to arrive suddenly “out of nowhere”
• Design without the hand, using logic alone? “design – less design”
• Creation of elemental programs to solve problems one by one, street design, gradient limits,
layout etc
• Programs would output potential plans and create a program to evaluate the output, link
these together, have the results evaluated by contractor
• Criteria of value to be met automatically by the program are defined in advance, everything
else however is left up to the program to decide randomly, free of human intervention
• They are not designed by hand they are “phenomena” generated by the word (law of nature)
of that famous designer)
EMERGENCE – READING 4 WEEK 7 JOSH KIM 8304548
Watanabe – Sun God City From Induction Design
5. Aims:
- Explore the outcomes of a subject being manipulated by a
another force
- Explore the relationship layers have with each other and
how they react when under some force or stress
Experiment 1 – Equipment
- 2 x Half Onion
- 750ml Saucepan
- ~ 750ml of water
- Electric cook top
Method
1) Bring water to boil with half onion (full heat)
2) When boiling point is reached drop to half heat
3) Record results every 5 minutes for a total of 20 minutes
4) Test with both 250ml and 500ml of Water
Experiment 1
EMERGENCE – PYSICAL EXPERIMENTS WEEK 7 JOSH KIM 8304548
6. Parameters
• ½ an onion (approx 45 – 50
grams)
• 250ml of water
• Results recorded at 5 x 5 minute
Intervals at Medium heat after
an initial stage of reaching
boiling point
• Final photo with subject out of
the water
Experiment 1A – 250ml of water
EMERGENCE – PYSICAL EXPERIMENTS WEEK 7 JOSH KIM 8304548
7. Experiment 1B – 500ml of water
EMERGENCE – PYSICAL EXPERIMENTS WEEK 7 JOSH KIM 8304548
Parameters
• ½ an onion (approx 45 – 50
grams)
• 250ml of water
• Results recorded at 4 x 5
minute Intervals at Medium
heat after an initial stage of
reaching boiling point
• Final photo with subject out
of the water
8. Findings:
- Layers started to raise and open around the core
- Core not necessarily in the centre of the subject
- Discolouring / transparency on the thinner outer layers
- The more it was submerged or exposed to the heat stress
the more it deformed and changed
Experiment 1 Findings
