Getting started on AWS is easy, but building a scalable, reliable, and performant product in the cloud can be a challenge for startups and enterprises alike. Netflix has famously migrated all our services to the cloud. Along the way, we have open-sourced large portions of our platform that helped make this a reality. In this talk, Mike McGarr (Manager – Netflix Developer Productivity) will provide a survey of the Netflix OSS products available. Mike will also share patterns and lessons Netflix learned migrating to the cloud. This talk will cover tools such as Nebula, Aminator and Spinnaker. Lastly, Mike will leave you with a roadmap for how to get started with Netflix OSS on your cloud today.

Snap CI enables software teams to do Continuous Delivery (CD). When practicing CD, the goal is to automate the deployment process and build software in such a way that it can be deployed to production any time. As a deployment tool, Snap CI cannot have downtime. If it did, our users would not be able to deploy their own software. We had to change Snap CI’s architecture to ensure zero-downtime and we chose to do blue-green deployments to achieve it. In this approach, we had to maintain two instances of our system: one active instance, and one inactive instance. Based on our experiences, we will share some tricks of the trade from the numerous challenges we faced such as: making the application aware of whether it was active or inactive, handling data migrations, and babysitting long-running jobs. Continuous delivery is all the rage these days, but without self-healing, highly available, and fault-tolerant infrastructure to deploy your applications to, it’s really only one piece of a much larger picture. Apache Mesos was born at UC Berkeley and grew into a robust, highly scalable cluster orchestrator while running thousands of nodes at Twitter. Support for Docker containers was added in 2013, and since then, it’s been adopted by companies like Netflix and Apple to run their critical infrastructure. Mesosphere has built the open source Datacenter Operating System (DC/OS) around Apache Mesos to provide all the supplementary tooling necessary to take Mesos to a production environment. Jenkins with DC/OS allows you to spin up build agents dynamically, an approach which has allowed companies like PayPal to cut the footprint of their build farms by hundreds of nodes, saving money on infrastructure by increasing utilization and reducing obstacles to providing teams with the resources they need when they need them. Sunil Shah and Roger Ignazio introduce DC/OS and demonstrate how to integrate it with the stalwart continuous integration server Jenkins, allowing you to set up a continuous delivery pipeline that takes an application composed of microservices from code repository to Docker Hub to a staging or production server with seamless automation. Sunil and Roger walk attendees through setting up their own pipeline using Jenkins on a DC/OS cluster, from installation and configuration of Jenkins to setting up a build to actually deploying it to a live environment where it can serve traffic, and also cover the internals of practical microservice architecture, including component-level deployment, application-level persistence, and intraprocess communication via service discovery.

A quick scan through Netflix Github repository reveals how deeply invested Netflix engineering has been on Java and the cloud. While both of these remain true, the story has gotten increasingly more complex over time. Growth and various business drivers have propelled Netflix beyond a single language company to multi-language support. The rise of containers and diverse programming environments means that the tools written for yesterday, will likely not work for tomorrow. In this talk, Mike McGarr (Engineering Leader, Netflix) will talk about the evolution of developer tooling at Netflix, focusing on command line tools they built to address evolving needs around programming languages, containers and more. He will share lessons learned while trying to support diverse programming languages and environments within a centralized team.
