2. THE PURIFICATION OF MARY AND
THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD
1 Samuel 1:21–28
Hebrews 2:14–18
Luke 2:22–32 (33–40)
God Gives the Gift of a Child to Destroy Death
The Lord opened the barren womb of Hannah and gave her the gift of the son for whom she
prayed, and in grateful response she presented and gave the child, Samuel, to the Lord’s service.
“As long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD” (1 Sam. 2:28). So, too, did Mary and Joseph
present the Child promised from the fall, born of a virgin’s womb. The true offering wasn’t the
turtledoves or young pigeons. It was the Child they carried. This Child has come to “destroy the
one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of
death were subject to lifelong slavery” (Heb. 2:14b–15). Set free by His advent in our flesh and
the promise of what He would do “in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the
people” (Heb. 2:17b), Simeon and Anna rejoiced, and we with them, for we know that we, too,
can face death unafraid and “depart in peace” (Luke 2:29) when our time comes.
3. • We have historically celebrated
Christ’s presentation in the
temple with a Candlemas and
Feast.
• Simeon then prophesied to Mary:
"Behold, this child is set for the
falling and the rising of many in
Israel, and for a sign which is
spoken against. Yes, a sword will
pierce through your own soul,
that the thoughts of many hearts
may be revealed" (Luke 2:34-
35).
• What are God’s biggest
surprises?
4. 1 In His Temple now behold
Him,
See the long-expected Lord;
Ancient prophets had foretold
Him, --
God has now fulfilled His word.
Now to praise Him, His
redeemed
Shall break forth with one
accord.
2 In the arms of her who bore
Him,
Virgin pure, behold Him lie,
While His aged saints adore Him
Ere in perfect faith they die.
Allelujah, allelujah!
Lo! the incarnate God most high!
3 Jesus, by Your presentation,
When they blessed You, weak
and poor,
Make us see Your great
salvation,
Seal us with Your promise sure;
And present us in Your glory
To Your Father, cleansed and
pure.

Let us pray for the whole Church
of God in Christ Jesus and for all
people according to their needs.
Everlasting Lord, You promised
by Your Spirit that Simeon would
not die until he had seen Your
promised Christ. Grant us the
same trust in Christ for
forgiveness that, having received
His body and blood on our
tongues and in our bodies and
beholding Him by faith, we might
be prepared for the day of our
death or the day of His return.
Lord, in Your mercy, hear our
prayer.
Gracious Father, You placed Your
Son into the home of Mary and
Joseph and through their care
presented Him in the temple.
Bless all our homes, that they
might be places where Your truth
is taught and confessed. As Joseph
took Mary as his wife, make all
husbands courageous and
compassionate in their love for
their wives. As Mary submitted to
Joseph, grant all wives grace to
submit to and respect their
husbands. Bless the work of
parents as they instruct their
children in Your Word…
Almighty God, in the depth of
Your love for Your creation, You
brought Your Son to the temple
and placed Him in the hands of
blessed St. Simeon. Abide with
those You place in the Office of
the Holy Ministry, that their hands
may ever be ready to deliver Your
gifts to Your people and their lips
bold to speak Your Gospel…

Heavenly Father, as Your Son has
become a merciful and faithful
high priest, making propitiation for
the sins of all people, hear His
intercession for His Bride, the
Church, for those who suffer
afflictions of body or mind,
sicknesses and sorrows. Remember
especially those who have
requested our prayers, [including
______________,] that they might
be blessed by Your merciful
visitation…
Gracious Father, as blessed St.
Anna waited in the temple for the
consolation of Israel, give to Your
people who await the second
advent of our Savior endurance in
our vocations, that we might do the
good works You have prepared in
advance for us to do…
Everlasting Lord, Your Son told us
that persecution would follow His
ascension. Give steadfastness and
endurance to our brothers and
sisters around the world who suffer
threats of bodily harm or death
because of the zeal and truth of
their confession. Grant repentance
to those who hate Your Church.
Hinder their plans and thwart their
evil intentions…
Join these, our prayers and praises,
with those of Your faithful people
of all times and places, and unite
them in the ceaseless petitions of
our great High Priest, Jesus Christ,
until He comes again in glory as
victorious Lord of all. Through
Him, with Him and in Him, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory
and honor is Yours, almighty
Father, forever and ever. Amen.

8. 1 Samuel 1:21-28
Samuel Given to the LORD
21 The man Elkanah and all his
housewent up to offer to
the LORD the yearly sacrifice and to
pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not
go up, for she said to her husband,
“As soon as the child is weaned, I
will bring him, so that he may
appear in the presence of
the LORD and dwell there
forever.” 23 Elkanah her husband
said to her, “Do what seems best to
you; wait until you have weaned
him; only, may the LORD establish
his word.” So the woman remained
and nursed her son until she weaned
him.24 And when she had weaned
him, she took him up with her,
along with a three-year-old
bull,[a] an ephah[b] of flour, and a
skin of wine, and she brought him
to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.
And the child was young. 25 Then
they slaughtered the bull, and they
brought the child to Eli. 26 And she
said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my
lord, I am the woman who was
standing here in your presence,
praying to the LORD.27 For this child
I prayed, and the LORDhas granted
me my petition that I made to
him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to
the LORD. As long as he lives, he is
lent to the LORD.”
And he worshiped the LORD there.
9. Hebrews 2:14-18
14 Since therefore the children
share in flesh and blood, he
himself likewisepartook of the
same things, thatthrough death he
might destroy the one who has the
power of death, that is, the
devil, 15 and deliver all those
whothrough fear of death were
subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For
surely it is not angels that he
helps, but he helps the offspring of
Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to
be made like his brothers in every
respect, so that he might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in
the service of God, to make
propitiation for the sins of the
people. 18 For because he himself
has suffered when tempted, he is
able to help those who are being
tempted.
10. Luke 2:22-40
Jesus Presented at the Temple
22 And when the time came for their
purification according to the Law of Moses,
they brought him up to Jerusalem to present
him to the Lord23 (as it is written in the Law
of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the
womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)24 and
to offer a sacrifice according to what is said
in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves,
or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a
man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon,
and this man was righteous and devout, waiting
for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy
Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been
revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he
would not see death before he had seen the
Lord's Christ.27 And he came in the Spirit into
the temple, and when the parents brought in
the child Jesus, to do for him according to the
custom of the Law,28 he took him up in his
arms andblessed God and said,
29 “Lord, now you are letting your
servant[a] depart in peace,
according to your word;
30 for my eyes have seen yoursalvation
31 that you have prepared in the presence of
all peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.”
33 And his father and his mother marveled at
what was said about him.34 And Simeon
blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
“Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and
rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is
opposed35 (and a sword will pierce through
your own soul also), so that thoughts from
many hearts may be revealed.”
36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the
daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She
was advanced in years, having lived with her
husband seven years from when she was a
virgin,37 and then as a widow until she was
eighty-four.[b] She did not depart from the
temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer
night and day. 38 And coming up at that very
hour she began to give thanks to God and to
speak of him to all who were waiting for the
redemption of Jerusalem.
The Return to Nazareth
39 And when they had performed everything
according to the Law of the Lord, they
returned into Galilee, to their own town
of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and
became strong, filled with wisdom. And the
favor of God was upon him.
11. Psalm 84
My Soul Longs for the Courts of
theLORD
To the choirmaster: according to The
Gittith.[a] A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.
84 How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
3 Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your
house,
ever singing your praise!Selah
5 Blessed are those whose strength is in
you,
in whose heart are the highways to
Zion.[b]
6 As they go through the Valley of Baca
they make it a place of springs;
the early rain also covers it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength;
each one appears before God in Zion.
8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;
give ear, O God of Jacob!Selah
9 Behold our shield, O God;
look on the face of your anointed!
10 For a day in your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the
house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God is a sun andshield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!

3 ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no
knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own
pleasure,[a]
and oppress all your workers.
4 Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day
will not make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is such the fast that I choose,
a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
and a day acceptable to theLORD?
6 “Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed[b] go free,
and to break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
9 Then you shall call, and the LORDwill answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

The Righteous Will Never Be Moved
112 [a] Praise the LORD!
Blessed is the man who fears theLORD,
who greatly delights in his commandments!
2
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches are in his house,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;
he is gracious, merciful, andrighteous.
5 It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice.
6 For the righteous will never be moved;
he will be remembered forever.
7 He is not afraid of bad news;
his heart is firm, trusting in theLORD.
8 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,
until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
9 He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever;
his horn is exalted in honor.
1 Corinthians 2:1-16
Proclaiming Christ Crucified
2 And I, when I came to you, brothers,[a] did not come
proclaiming to you the testimony[b] of God with lofty
speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among
you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 And I was
with you in weakness and in fear and much
trembling, 4 and my speech and my message were not in
plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the
Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in
the wisdom of men[c]but in the power of God.
Wisdom from the Spirit
6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it
is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this
age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a
secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed
before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this
age understood this, for if they had, they would not have
crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written,
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”—
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.
For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of
God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the
spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one
comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of
God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world,
but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand
the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in
words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the
Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are
spiritual.[d]
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the
Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able
to understand them because they are spiritually
discerned. 15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is
himself to be judged by no one. 16 “For who has
understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.
Matthew 5:13-20
Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste,
how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for
anything except to be thrown out and trampled under
people's feet.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill
cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it
under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in
the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before
others, so that[a] they may see your good works and give
glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Christ Came to Fulfill the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the
Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill
them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass
away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until
all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of
the least of these commandments and teaches others to do
the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven,
but whoever does them and teaches them will be called
great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless
your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and
Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
