6. Theme of High Priesthood To the Jews, the High Priest was the mediator between man & God. The only one who could enter the Holy of Holies on their behalf on Day of Atonement. People were terrified to approach God – they did so through the High Priest.
7. The priesthood of Jesus is different from any other It never ends – it is eternal! Before the High Priest could offer sacrifices for the people, he had to first offer sacrifice for his own sins. Hebrews’ favorite word – hapax – once for all. No need to repeat his sacrifice annually.
8. The High Priest is as important to us today as it was to them We have a High Priest – Jesus. Jesus is greater than the angels He is greater than Moses. His priesthood is like no other. Hebrews 4:14 MSG Therefore since we have a great High Priest who passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God--let‘ us hold fast to our confession.
12. Sacrifices cannot accomplish forgiveness Hebrews 10:6 NAB “ Holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in” They were not wrong, but ineffective Jesus came to fulfill & complete a system that pointed forward to him Christ is fulfilling the OT plan
13. Only the blood of Jesus can wash our hands of the stain of sin Hebrews 9:13-14 NIV The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. (14) How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
14. How could people in OT be forgiven by sacrifice of Christ? Christ’s blood washes both ways from Calvary – backwards to cover sins of OT & forward to cover sins of generations unborn Full salvation is found only in Christ Key word is hapax – once for all
15. Once for all (hapax) Hebrews 9:11 NAB “But when Christ came as high priest of good things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is not belonging to this creation.”
16. Once for all (hapax) Hebrews 9:12 NAB “He entered for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of by goats and calves; but with he entered withhis own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.”
17. Once for all (hapax) Hebrews 9:13-14 NAB For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer’s ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed. (14) How much more, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.
18. Once for all (hapax) Hebrews 9:26 NAB “ If that were so, Hewould have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away with sin his sacrifice .
19. Once for all (hapax) Hebrews 9:28 NABso also Christ offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.”
20. Once for all (hapax) Hebrews 10:10 NAB‘By this will, we have been consecrated through the offering of the the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
21. Once for all (hapax) Hebrews 10:12 NAB “But this one offered one sacrifice for sins, and took his seat forever at the right hand of God. “
22. The Perfect Sacrifice of Christ - Impossibility vs. Reality Hebrews 10:1-10 NAB Since the law hasonly a shadow of the good things to come and not the very images of them. For this reason it can never make perfect those who come to worship by the same that they offer countinaully each year. r (2)Otherwise, would not the sacrifices have ceased to be offered since the worshipers, once cleansed would no longer have any consiousness of sins? (3)But in those sacrifices there is only a yearly rememberance of sins, (4)for it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats take away sins.”
23. The Perfect Sacrifice of Christ - Impossibility vs. Reality Hebrews 10:1-10 NAB(5)For this reason, when Hecame into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; (6)holocaustand sin offerings you took no delight in. (7) Then I said, ‘As is written of me in the scroll– Behold, I come to do your will, O God.'" (8) First he says, “Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in” These are offered according to the law. (9) Then he says, “Behold, I come to do your will." He takes away the first to establish the second. (10)By this ‘will”, we have been made consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:1-10 NIV
24. HIGH PRIEST Aaron High priest taken from among men (Heb.5: 1) As for the people, so also for him- self, to offer for sins. (Heb.5: 3) Every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: (Heb.10:11) Who served unto the example and shadow of heavenly things (Heb.8: 5) Christ A great high priest, that is passed into the heavens (Heb.4: 14) Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins (Heb.7: 27) He had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; (Heb.10: 12) He obtained a more excellent ministry, … which was established upon better promises. (Heb.8: 6) 9/27/2009
25. Hebrews 10:19-23 NAB Therefore, brothers, since through the blood of Jesuswe have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary(20)By the new and living way He opened up for us through the veil, that is His flesh. (21) And since we have “a great High Priest over the house of God's, (22) let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed inpure water. (23) Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy.
26. Our text in three parts – each with a relevant quote from the OT The Perfect Sacrifice of Christ Hebrews 10:1-10 Psalms 40:6-8 The Perfect Ministry of Christ Hebrews 10:11-14 Psalms 110:1 The Perfect Covenant of Christ Hebrews 10:15-18 Jeremiah 31:33-34
27. The reality is Christ has done what endless sacrifices could never do It is the difference between spiritual life and death Hebrews 10:10 NAB By this will, we have been consecrated through those offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
28. The heart of our text contrasts an impossibility with a reality Hebrews 10:4-7 NIV … it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. (5) Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; (6) with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. (7) Then I said, 'Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will, O God.'"
