‘Let me tell you
something
about myself…’

3. Sorry, but unless you’re a
celebrity, your audience
really doesn’t want to hear
much about you.

‘First, I need
to apologize
for…’

5. DON’T apologize for
anything (language skills,
lack of time or preparation
etc). It makes you look
weak.

‘Please save
your
questions
until the end.’

7. You are not giving a
speech. A presentation is
meant to be interactive.
Allow your audience to be
involved.

me of a joke.’

9. You are not a comedian.
Jokes in presentations are
rarely funny and almost
always a disaster. Don’t
do it.

‘I know you
can’t see this
graph very
well, but…’

11. If your slide is unreadable
to your audience, either
change it or don’t use it.

‘I know this is
kind of
boring, but…’

13. If you don’t have passion
for your topic, you
shouldn’t be presenting it.

‘I hope you
see the
advantages
of this now.’

15. Don’t use the word ‘hope’.
Be confident that you
made a difference and tell
them how!
