Warm Up:
  What is a Treaty?
 What are the consequences of a
   treaty?
 In November 1919, the major countries that fought in World
War I came together in France to make and sign a treaty. A
treaty is an agreement that is signed by at least two
countries and establishes rules those countries must follow.
The treaty signed by these countries was designed to
officially stop fighting and establish what the world was
going to look like after World War I. Because the conference
took place in a palace called Versailles, the conference came
to be known as the Versailles Conference and the document
they signed was called the Treaty of Versailles. Today, you
and your classmates will conduct a simulation that is
designed to reflect the real life Treaty of Versailles.
A formal agreement that is
made between 2 or more
countries which brings an
end to a war or conflict. In
the treaty, each country’s
government agrees to
follow certain rules or
guidelines to prevent future
conflict.
A possible part of the peace
treaty in which Germany
would be blamed as guilty
for having started the
fighting in World War One.
If included, this would allow
the Allies to assign other
punishments to Germany.
2 areas of land on the
border between France
and Germany. These
lands were rich in natural
resources like coal and
iron. Both countries had
been fighting over who
owned these lands for
decades.
A penalty or punishment
in order to repay another
country for the damages
it suffered in a war. This
money was meant to
repair lands, cities,
factories, train tracks, and
other things destroyed in
the fighting.
When a country decreases
the size of its armed
forces. Countries rarely
choose to do this on their
own; rather, it is usually
something they are
forced to do by another
country.
An international association
where leaders from around
the world could meet. US
President Woodrow Wilson
(who wrote the plan)
believed it would help
countries resolve their
differences peacefully,
instead of going to war.
