winning South African super group Sterling EQ.
Adding more than a dash of creativity to their passion for
food, Red Pepper tempted everybody’s taste buds. Jaco
Uys, a Director of Helderview introduced the New X5 to an
appreciative audience.
The X5 did not fail to impress and was definitely the star
of the evening. Enough said!

iFix Founder & CEO
Alex Fourie
Alex Fourie, 27 year old founder of
iFix is one of the South Africans that is
included in Forbes Magazine’s list of top
10 most promising young African Entre-
preneurs.
It all started in 2006 when Alex was a
student at Stellenbosch University. His
iPod broke and he was told that it could
not be fixed, but as his iPod was the
centre of his life then and as he’d listen
to music on his way to class, he could
not do so. However, this disappoint-
ment didn’t stop him from trying to fix it
himself. He bought various parts online
and fixed it by watching a YouTube
video. His friend’s iPod also broke and
he fixed it the same way.
After he repaired a few, he decided
to place an advert in the Cape Ads. He
had immediate response and received
15 - 20 phone calls a day of people that
had the same problem. Soon thereafter
he employed a friend that was study-
ing engineering and they started doing
repairs for people. iFix was born in 2007
after satisfied friends referred other dis-
satisfied Apple product owners in search
of Apple repairs.
During an interview with FIN24 Alex
stated: “We work closely with our
overseas suppliers. We are an out of
warranty replacement centre and act as
a 3rd party and not affiliated to Apple”.
After six months iFix opened a small
store in Cape Town and more full-time
staff were hired. Today, 6 years later iFix
repairs and services all Apple products,
Samsung Smartphones and expanded
into selling phone accessories.
iFix currently operates 8 stores coun-
trywide with its head office in Cape Town,
and stores in Canal Walk and Stellen-
bosch, as well as regional branches in
Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban.
Alex’s Advice for potential
entrepreneurs

you are passionate about. Anything you
believe in and make sure you do it well.
Don’t do something for money.”

THE NEWS THE NEWSPAPERPAGE 4
Ons doen ‘n beroep op die publiek,
stalletjehouers by markte en winkele-
ienaars om bewus te wees dat daar
vervalste R200 note in omloop is en
hulle nie te laat mislei nie.
Deur die vinnige optrede van ‘n stal-
letjiehouer by die Country Craft Market
in Somerest Wes is die verlies van
ander stalletjiehouers to ‘n minimum
beperk toe ‘n vrou onlangs ‘n vervalste
R200 noot aangebied het as betaling.
Die gevoel van die papier het die stal-
letjiehouer agterdogtig gemaak, en by
nadere bestudering het sy besef dat die
noot vervals is. Dit is dadelik onder die
organiseerders van die Country Craft
Market se aandag gebring en die woord
is vinnig versprei na die 180 stalletjies
om hulle bewus te maak van die ver-
valste note en op die uitkyk daarvoor te
wees.
Vervalste R200 note
in omloop
Volgens een van die organiseerders,
Ronel Visser is daar op drie of vier van
die vervalste note afgekom. Volgens
Visser is die vals R200 note die heel
nuutste weergawe met sirkeltjies op,
die papier verskil van die werklike noot,
geen watermerk was sigbaar nie en die
snywerk van die noot was nie perfek uit-
gevoer nie.
Dit wil voorkom asof dit ‘n vrou was
met blonde hare wat die vervalste noot
aangebied het. Dit is ongelukkig nie
duidelik of sy alleen was nie, aangesien
die mark baie besig was ten tye van die
voorval.
Die Country Craft Market bestaan al
vir meer as 30 jaar en voorsien uitsluitlik
kunshandwerk van uitnemende gehalte.

Kirstenbosch Treetop Canopy Walkway opening soon
The Treetop Canopy Walkway at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden under construction
Mark Thomas and Henry Fagan's project, the Kirstenbosch Treetop Canopy
Walkway at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden has a uniquely South African twist.
The construction of the structure is almost complete with the formal opening to the
public in April.
The Treetop Canopy Walkway also nicknamed the “boomslang” is a 130m-long
skeletal structure that twists 11.5m above the indigenous arboretum, also known as
the Enchanted Forest. It curves between the trees and through the branches and
joins the forest floor in two different places.
The Walkway was built to celebrate the Kirstenbosch Centenary with a project
that would be permanent, spectacular, unique and long lasting.
Visitors will be able to experience the forest from high above, while seeing birds
and other animals that are generally hard to see. The walkway will also provide a
breathtaking 360 degree view of Cape Town and the Peninsula.
The walkway will be free to walk on. A garden entry ticket is all that is required.

Masterchef 3
Celebrity Chef, Reuben Riffel will
appear as a permanent Judge on the
third Season of the MasterChef South
Africa. He will be joining Benny Masek-
wameng and Pete Goffe-Wood as he
takes over duties from Chef Andrew
Atkinson.
Andrew Atkinson accepted an offer at
the end of 2013 to fill the full-time posi-
tion of Executive Chef for a hotel group
in Johannesburg and could no longer
commit himself to the filming of the third
series.
Reuben Riffel began his career as
chef in his home town Franschhoek.
After traveling abroad he started his
flagship restaurant Reuben’s in Fran-
schhoek. A few years later he opened
the second restaurant at The Robertson
Small Hotel in Robertson. This was fol-
lowed by Reuben’s at the One&Only at
the V & A Waterfront.
In addition to his successful restaurant
portfolio, Reuben was Chef of the Year,
Reuben’s in Franschhoek was Restau-
rant of the Year in the Eat Out Awards of
2004 and ranked South Africa’s Top 10
restaurant for three consecutive years.
He is also the author of 3 best-selling
cookbooks. His latest cookbook, Braai
– Reuben on Fire was launched at the
end of last year.

deel gevorm van die opening van die
Coetzenburg Swembad.
Die swembad-projek is befonds deur

ing van die Remgro Groep. Kragtens
dié ooreenkoms word ʼn gedeelte van
die swembad se kapasiteit tot beskik-

By die geleentheid het prof Russel

gesê dat daar nie kompromieë
aangegaan is wat die gehalte van die
swembad betref nie. Daar bestaan
by die US studente die potensiaal om

The Sound of Music
at Artscape Theatre
The hills will become alive with the songs of one of the most beloved musicals in
history, The Sound of Music will be performed from 19 February to 30 March 2014
at the Artscape theatre.
Presented by Pieter Toerien, Andrew Lloyd Webber and former actor David Ian,
the story of the von Trapp family will be revived by an all-star South African cast.
The classic tale follows the young Maria, who becomes a governess to seven
children and ends up marrying their father, Baron von Trapp. Soon after the
wedding, Nazi Germany takes hold of Austria, and instead of heeding the call to
join the navy, the Baron, along with Maria and the kids, flee across the Alps.
The Sound of Music features memorable and sing-along worthy tunes, like ‘My
Favourite Things’, ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’ and ‘So Long, Farwell’.
Tickets available at Computicket.
Each year businesses in Bright Street,
Somerset West come together to host
an evening of family fun and entertain-
ment. This year’s theme is ‘Mardi Gras’
reflecting the new time of year for the
carnival, which has previously been
held in December in the run up to the
festive season.
The carnival will take place on Thurs-
day 20 March, the day before the long
weekend for Human Rights day. The
evening’s entertainment begins at
18h00 with a grand parade of scooters,
majorettes and dancers. Local bands
and entertainers will perform throughout
the evening leading up to a grand prize
draw and finale at 22h30 – the star prize
is a scooter from Mad Macs.
There will be food and drink stalls and
a whole range of crafts and gifts, plus
a fine art quarter outside the Imibala
Gallery. Children’s entertainment will
be on offer with a magician, face paint-
ing, sand art and a jumping castle in a

TRAVEL THE NEWSPAPERPAGE 6
As online internet travel booking
sites are exploding, everybody is
wondering if travel agents will be
around much longer. The younger
traveller and budget travellers get
information and book their trips
online where there is no need for a
travel agent.
During the recession in 2009 the tra-
ditional travel agents were hardest hit,
losing nearly a quarter of their income.
Other forms of travel agents emerged
since targeting corporate, luxury, spe-
cialized and niche travellers who value
personal relationships with clients over
budget savings.
Even with the widespread availability
of online booking options, some travel-
lers prefer the personalized service of
a travel agency. Unlike major booking
sites, travel agencies provide expert
advice, access to exclusive deals, and
even phone and email support while
travelling. In order to get the most out of
your agency’s services, you should take
the time to select the right travel agency
for your needs.
Some travel agencies take a general
approach to offering services and work
with many types of clients. If you have
particular travel needs, you might con-
sider working with a speciality travel
agency. These agencies have extensive
experience providing customized travel
services to certain types of customers.
Here are some types of speciality travel
agencies you can choose from:
Business travel - Speciality agen-
cies focus on providing travel services
to clients who are primarily interested in
business trips, also known as corporate
travel. As business travellers have to
be at a place at a certain time they are
not always looking for the best deals.
They provide services to companies
for conferences, trade shows, business
meetings, training events, and work-
shops. When you work with a business
travel agency, you can be assured that
your agent will manage your trip around
your meeting or event including flight
booking, transportation, accommoda-
tion, visa requirements and excursions.
Business travel agents can also
ensure that employees can travel on the
same flights, have seats next to each
other on the airplane, stay in the same
hotel and have coordinate ground trans-
portation to and from the event. Travel
agents with a good knowledge of the
world will be an advantage when faced
with solving problems in overseas des-
tinations.
Luxury - Luxury travel agents serve
customers who are interested in luxury
tourism and don’t mind paying for it.
Like most other travel agents, they book
flights, reserve luxury hotel accommo-
dation, and schedule activities at the
customer’s destination.

Is there still place for the
traditional Travel Agent ?
British Airwaysin the News
British Airways currently operates
two daily flights to Cape Town since
October 2013 until the end of March; it
being the busy Cape summer season.
For the winter season commencing May
2014, the airline will increase flights on
the London/Cape Town route by three
flights a week.
Other British Airways news include
British Airways A380 special fly-past
Table Mountain, Man versus Machine
and the launch of the British Airways
Credit Card.
British Airways A380 special fly-
past Table Mountain - A British Airways
A380 special fly-past of the Cape Town
landmark, Table Mountain took place
on 5 February, 2014. The fly past cel-
ebrated the start of BA’s A380 service
from London to Johannesburg that com-
menced on 12 February operating from
London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 to OR
Tambo, and will increase to six weekly
flights by March 2014.
The air-to-air photoshoot saw the
A380 fly over Robben Island, followed
by a fly past Table Mountain from Lion’s
Head towards Devil’s Peak. This has
been the first time that an Airbus A380
has ever flown over Table Mountain, a
World Heritage site.
Man versus Machine - British Airways
celebrated the launch of A380 direct
flights to Johannesburg on 12th Feb-
ruary 2014. As part of the celebrations
they offered five people from around the
world a once in a lifetime opportunity to
prove they have what it takes to race the
new A380 superjumbo on the runway in
Durban.
The challenge came after South
African rugby legend, Bryan Habana’s
sprint against the aircraft caught global
attention last year, to become one of the
top 10 most-watched YouTube videos of
2013.
In the end the 23-year-old Project
Manager from Cape Town, Rudolph
Raath, took the crown to become the
fastest runner on the day. Raath won
two business class return tickets on one
of British Airways’ A380 direct flights to
London.
Following the incredible success of
the original video, British Airways also
offered to donate two Club World tickets
to FoodBank SA, an organisation which
facilitates the provision of 11 million
meals in South African communities with

They also provide other services
including travel insurance, and visa
requirements. They differ from other
travel agents by seeking extraordinary
travel destinations and provide personal
assistance to the luxury traveller. Exam-
ples of luxury tourism can include exotic
vacations and honeymoons, chartering
private jets and hiring personal chauf-
feurs.
Group travel - If you are taking a trip
with family or a large group, a group
travel agency can streamline flights,
bus trips, accommodation bookings,
and other travel needs. They might also
be able to secure group rates for tours,
attractions, and ground transportation
to save money. Using a group travel
agency can take the stress out of travel-
ling with a large group, and can help
you enjoy a vacation without spending
a fortune.
International travel - Travelling
abroad is more complex than taking
a domestic vacation. Your interna-
tional travel agency can help you with
customs and practices of your destina-
tion to ensure that your trip is enjoyable
and hassle-free. Your specialist can also
provide guidance for obtaining pass-
ports and finding your way in a foreign
country.
Other types of speciality travel agen-
cies you can choose from include ocean
or river cruises, African Safari, railway
journeys, and much more.

and will be around for a long time.”

FRANSCHHOEK STATION PUB & CRAFT BAR
A Station, a Pub, a Craft Bar, a Braai - no passengers
standing on the platform awaiting the departure of the Steam
train, but rather, passengers seated at the craft bar counter
awaiting the coolness of a craft beer, children playing on
the railway lines where once the Steam train was bellowing
steam, and other passengers, some on the other side of the
railway lines having a braai and many enjoying the hospital-
ity of the new Station Master, Andre Niemand.
This is what has become of the old-old tradition of the steam
of yester year. For many years Franschhoek Station was the
centre of post, goods and the export of fruit and wine. Today,
the newly appointed Station Master has stepped up his crew
and imported the likes of a chef to replace the “laaimeester”.
Final hurdle for Gilliam in becoming a Chartered Accountant
It all started in 2002 when the Swieg-
ers family moved from Pretoria to
Greenways Estate in Strand. While
attending high school Gilliam and his
older brothers started their own carwash
business to earn extra income. Gilliam
laughed when he told The Newspaper
that being the youngest he had to do all
the dirty work by washing the wheels
and vacuum the cars, while his brothers
washed the outside of the cars.
He immediately showed leader-
ship skills by taking the role of dealing
with the customers and managing the
finances. A true characteristic of a future
entrepreneur!
A year later Gilliam found himself all on
his own in the carwash business as his
older brothers withdrew leaving him with
a sense of loyalty towards the existing
customers. He stepped up the business
to the next level establishing “Gilliam’s
Callwash” and getting somebody to
help him. Together they motivated
each other during the difficult times as
well as getting through their busy time
schedule.
He worked endlessly after school, on
weekends, on public holidays and even
once on an early cold winter morning
before going to school. He secured
many loyal customers over the time.
One of these customers assisted him
to invest his savings while another gave
him a loan to buy a scooter to make his
work load easier. He was motivated by
his customers and felt thankful as they
always appreciated his hard work. A
few years later he become financially
independent and managed his own
bookkeeping and finances.
His record, with the assistance of a
helper, stands at 21 cars washed in one
single day! Time management was of
great importance to Gilliam. He had to
plan his work, car wash schedule, and
his studies carefully.
After completing Grade 12 success-
fully the Accounting firm, Germishuys
Zandstra Incorporated employed Gilliam
as a student clerk while he enrolled as
a BComp student at Unisa. This was
the start of his career in auditing while
washing cars after work and staying
up late nights studying. Not to mention
weekends and holidays he had to give
up to cover the great volume of study
material over the past 6 years. During
this period Gilliam bought his own car
and the scooter was used by one of his
assistants to do the work at hand.
It was not always easy for him to focus
on the various tasks at hand. He never
had any spare time for himself except
for working and studying. In 2011 he
started fading out the carwash business
to focus on his studies. He could not set
aside his loyal customers and continued
to help out where he could and in 2011
he washed his last car in Greenways.
Gilliam completed his articles at Ger-
mishuys Zandstra Inc in four years. After
graduating in 2011 he completed his
Honours Degree in 2013. He recently
wrote the first of two SAICA board exam-
inations in the final hurdle to become a
Chartered Accountant.
Today it feels good to see his old
customers and relive the carwash days
in Greenways.
Due to his hectic time schedule, there
is never any free time, yet, he manages
to do fitness training regularly. The
training builds endurance rather than
bodybuilding, and disciplines you to
complete sections within specific time
periods. As we know Giliam, he pushes
his body to the extreme limit until he
reaches his goals.
Gilliam’s method to success
is Endurance, Discipline and
Motivation
“My advice to all the youngsters who
want to reach their dream is to work
hard, discipline yourself, focus on the
task at hand and make intelligent deci-
sions and motivate yourself to succeed
in any area of life.”
Gilliam, we at The Newspaper have
known you since the day you started
your own carwash business. Well done
son, your hard work has almost paid off.

HEALTH & WELLNESS THE NEWSPAPERPAGE 10
Health benefits of outdoor wellness
One of the best ways to improve
your physical, mental, social and
intellectual wellness is to go out-
doors.
Scientific reports have shown that
athletes are more advantaged when
receiving fresh air, sun, and increased
oxygen flow within the blood while train-
ing outdoors.
Is nature the answer? In recent time
nature is widely used as an element of
therapy for patients suffering from phys-
ical and mental health problems. Being
outside makes people feel more active,
energetic, relaxed, positive and revital-
ized.
Outdoor activities create the desire to
be outside, enjoy the natural surround-
ings, discover many of nature’s wonders
and return to the beauty that nature
provides. A large number of outdoor
activities may be performed individually,
with friends and family, or as a team.
Mother Nature has great health ben-
efits to offer, whether it is exercising,
walking, jogging, running, yoga, cycling,
hiking, fishing, horseback riding, surfing,
swimming or many sport activities.
Activities can also include spending
more time in natural settings like parks,
a walk on the beach, camping, a picnic,
enjoying a sunset, sitting on a river

bank, viewing the beauty of a waterfall,
bird watching or taking photos of inter-
esting places, people or wildlife.
Outdoor activity offers many benefits
in physical, mental, social and intellec-
tual wellness.
Physical - Outdoor exercise and
physical activity gives meaning to your
life, something to enjoy and creates
a sense of purpose. Regular outdoor
activity provides a number of physical
health benefits: reduce blood pressure,
arthritis pain, heart disease and risk
of chronic diseases. It improves the
immune system, better sleeping pat-
terns, creating a healthier appetite.
Mental - Consistent physical activity
reduce and relief stress, anxiety and
depression. Spending time exercising
leads to an increase in positive moods
and a reduction in cortisol levels, a
hormone released when the body feels
stress.
Improves quality of life - Better self-
esteem and confidence often results
from consistent recreation and a feeling
of wellness occurs. Positive lifestyle
choices contribute to individuals’ feel-
ings of having control over their life and
of success and are more motivated to
achieve.
Social - The great outdoors offer social
benefits as interacting with people who
share the same interests and who enjoy
in participating outdoors. Participating in
sport and other leisure activities creates
an opportunity to meet new friends, build
meaningful relationships and share feel-
ings of loyalty, trust and goodwill.
Intellectual - Natural surroundings
rejuvenate the mind, improve your atti-
tude, your concentration and increase
your positivity and productivity. Studies
have shown that people who exercise
regularly experience more peaceful
sleep, this results in more energy and
attentiveness during the next day, pro-
viding improved concentration levels.
Environmental - Leisure activities
based in natural environments increase
the importance of improving and sus-
taining the world’s natural resources.
Economical - Outdoor recreation has
an important role to play in economi-
cal growth. It can serve as a method
for promoting tourism. Travellers enjoy
participating in a wide range of outdoor
leisure activities, from bushwalking,
mountain biking, picnicking and many
more. It creates job opportunities, moti-
vate and support employees to take
part in outdoor office programs, encour-
ages individuals to become active and
fit, reduce the risks of illness and can
provide inexpensive and accessible
leisure activities available to all, reduc-
ing the rate of crime.
Get your daily dose of the outdoors
to help stay in perfect health.
RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
Driving alongside the picturesque
vineyards toward Mont Marie, a relaxed
presence fills your every desire toward
an evening of non-molecular fine dining,
but rather fine dining in real food.
Mont Marie, a Restaurant of Distinction
was conceived through the passion-
ate drive of the 27 year old Pieter Vlok
and the kind support of Whitey Basson
who made Pieter’s dream a reality. In
support of his passion, Pieter as owner
and Executive Chef also has the backup
support of his Sous Chef Alex Skeate
and his general manager Suzanne
Maree.
On entering Mont Marie Restaurant
you are met by the hospitality of the
front of house manager who guides you
to the terrace overlooking the splen-
dour of the dam and the beauty of the
Blaauwklippen Valley surrounded by the
gracious Hottentots Holland Mountains,
with the setting sun changing the land-
scape scenery every few minutes. The
interior is well designed and modern
styled, with an open plan kitchen where
the delightful dishes are prepared.
Feeling relocated to another world,
Chef Pieter makes his appearance with
a word of welcome while we sample
homemade bread, poppy seed lavash,
deep fried chicken wings, with a honey
& mustard sauce and garlic emulsion.
The dishes on the menu are well
selected with a choice of either a two or
three course meal. The Lamb Bobotie
starter with lamb as an ingredient melts
in your mouth, not to mention the perfect
combination of flavours of the deep fried
calamari on a rosti with aioli, wasabi
mayonnaise, and home-made sweet
chilli sauce which stimulates the taste
buds.
The Pork Belly as a main course
served with roasted vegetables, apple
sauce and a soy sauce was out of this
world. The medium Beef Sirloin was
cooked to perfection with a jus comple-
menting the dish. The Vegetarian dishes
are not forgotten and one can indulge in
the Falafel served with confit potatoes
and coleslaw with Malay mayonnaise.
To end a stunning evening with perfect
food, treat yourself to the Lemon &
Poppy seed soufflé with lemon purée,
home-made lemon ice cream and crème
pâtissière. Should you like something
less sweet, the Vanilla Panna Cotta with
fresh fruit, almonds and home-made
chocolate & raspberry ice cream is a
winner. A new addition to the dessert
menu is the coffee cake with chocolate
mousse, mascarpone cream, home-
made vanilla ice cream and espresso.
Compliments to Pieter Vlok; the start-
up of Mont Marie Restaurant a few
months ago is well received. As an
Executive Chef you serve well designed,
prepared, and beautifully plated dishes
with passion from your kitchen. You are
truly The Newspaper’s recommended
Restaurant of the Month.
Mont Marie offers breakfast and lunch
Wednesday to Sunday, and dinner on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday eve-
nings. The Restaurant is closed on
Mondays and Tuesdays. Furthermore,
Mont Marie can facilitate various private
group functions, even small weddings in
its selected entertainment lounge and
private bar.
Visit Mont Marie for a food experience
that will stay with you for a long time and
which will urge you to go back for more!

Is this the end of Pin Cards @ ATM’s?
South Africa is soon to undergo a
change in Automated Teller Machines
(ATMs) as Lumidigm plans to intro-
duce machines that don’t need a card
with a Personal Identification Number
(PIN) to draw cash. Unlike PINs, crimi-
nals will have great difficulty in faking a
fingerprint to access someone’s bank
account.
“The technology will rely on a finger-
print reader to verify the identity of a
banking customer and permit access
to an account. The use of biometrics
as a method of identity is far superior
to a PIN,” says Lumidigm, the company
developing the technology for SA.
This technology is successful in Brazil
and Kenya to cut down on bank fraud.
Bloemhof
Astro Hockey
Field
Breaking
Ground
Some banks may retrofit existing ATMs,
while others may design new ATMs with
this technology in place.
Some security experts say, while bank
card fraud would be erased through
fingerprint authentication, this does not
rule out threats that could compromise
the financial and personal security of the
customer. The developer of the technol-
ogy says that such fears are unfounded
as the technology can check to see
whether a finger is “alive”.
The fully biometric system may be lim-
iting people who usually send relatives
to conduct ATM transactions on their
behalf, because the system requires
that you have to present yourself to
be scanned in order to access your
account.
A dream come true - After many years in the planning Bloemhof will have its own astro hockey field.
Construction under the control of the QS Ben van Rooyen saw the first sods moved as the official
announcement.
Delivery of the Astro hockey field is expected during May 2014.
Great excitement among the hockey lovers fill the air, while excavators and graders pave the way
through dust and wind to prepare the astro hockey field ahead of time.

The Best place for a selfie?
The 2.8m tall by 4m wide yellow
frame, designed by Porky Hefer, will
be the perfect place to take a selfie as
reminder that Table Mountain is the offi-
cial New7 wonder of Nature.
Seven proposed frames is to be
erected in Cape Town. The city had its
first frame built at the V&A Waterfront
in September last year and the second
frame on Signal Hill.
The third frame was completed on
13 February at Eden on the Bay in
Blouberg.
The frames are sponsored by Table
Mountain Aerial Cableway Company
and the interactive artwork is also an
official World Design Capital 2014
project.
Table Mountain is the only natural
wonder in the middle of a city and the
frames are a way of celebrating and
reminding Capetonians of how lucky
they are to have the amazing mountain
as a backdrop.

”Do you know what the name
Esmé means?”
With an expression of heartbroken-
ness, yet overpowered by joy and a
tear of happiness in his eyes, Beyers
Truter, the Owner and Winemaker of
Beyerskloof looks me in the eye, and
says, “It means beloved”.
Esmé’s “legacy” is everywhere visible
on the Beyerskloof Estate. She walked
the soil of Beyerskloof as the “beloved”
of her Heavenly Father. She fulfilled
her responsibility not only toward her
Heavenly Father, but also, toward her
husband, children, and grandchildren.
She was perfected before her Heav-
enly Father, before the sudden return of
her breath to be home with the Father.
It was an employee who later said
that Esmé was the one with whom the
workers could share their challenges;
the one who would assist with love and
compassion in their everyday need. Soft
spoken, out of the limelight Esmé’s pres-
ence grew Beyerskloof in Beyers that it
may be said, “Here’s to her Legacy”.
It is the Esmé of Beyers who became
the “beloved” winemaker in Beyers
who set forth as the winemaker of
Beyerskloof unto becoming the nomi-
nated Winemaker of the Month. The
interview with the Newspaper was filled
with the presence of Esmé. It became

Wine Maker of the Month
On a blind date almost 40 years earlier
Esmé became the love of Beyers. It was
her parents who sent her from Nama-
qualand to Cape Town at a young age
to find herself a job.
She ended up at Stellenbosch Univer-
sity as a personal assistant to “Oom”
Albie Basson. It was this same Esmé
whom Beyers married in 1979.
Esmé’s Legacy
Esmé’s departure may have been final to the heart of men, but when looking
around Beyerskloof, she is everywhere to be seen. Beyerskloof’s emblem is a true
reflection of her compassion for the Estate. She carefully prepared the final print of
the Pinotage Logo after placing a red leave to dry in a book. Red Leave Restaurant
speaks her presence. Her shop “Angels” reflects the love toward her Creator and
Master. Her garden was her “Eden”, her love, Beyers, her children, grandchildren
all speak her voice. Beyerskloof has become a family of God’s Children.
Wine by the Pinotage King
The Beyerskloof philosophy is a truth-
ful expression of the God given talents
received. It shines through in the com-
mitment of the Beyerskloof Winemakers
to produce wines of exceptional quality,
a commitment which has earned
Beyerskloof international acclaim.
Beyers, a man of many distinctions
is known for producing excellent wines
with great depth, length and character.
In 1991 Beyers Truter was named Inter-
national Winemaker of the Year at the
Great wine requires Faith
The Beyerskloof Faith Cape Blend pays tribute to the soil and
climate, the region and its people and the credence that great
wine requires trust in the terroir, one’s ability and blessing from
above. Great wine requires faith. The grapes were picked at
optimum ripeness.
The juice was made in open fermenters, on the skins for 5-6
days at an average temperature of 26°C. Punching of the cap
was done every 2 hours to extract good colour and flavours
from the grapes. After malolactic fermentation in stainless steel
tanks the wine aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months.
The Faith blend is a barrel selection of the best wines from the
2010 vintage in the Beyerskloof cellar.
Faith is a Super Premium Cape Blend reflecting the true char-
acter of Beyerskloof’s diversity and boldness. This wine is a
testament of Beyerskloof’s faith in Pinotage and in their Maker.
Here’s to Diesel, my best friend
Diesel, Beyers’ closest silent partner, his dog named Diesel
with a heart of gold, walked the vineyards with him.
Diesel became the brand name of a take-me-seriously bottle
Pinotage, named the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage.
During the first phase in making Pinotage the juice was pre-
pared over 5 days in open casks with punch downs every 2
hours while maintaining an average fermentation temperature
of 25.5˚C. After Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks
the wine was matured in 100% new French oak barrels for 21
months. After maturation, only 20 barrels were selected out of
300 for the production of Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2011.
This wine shows what Beyerskloof is trying to accomplish with
their elegant style of premium Pinotage.

a moment where the Divine Presence of
the “Beloved of the Father” was present,
visible through Divine Intervention. It is
as though you could feel the uniqueness
of her spirit speaking through Beyers
unto a people.
“What would Esmé’s message have
been to the winemaking industry”,
I asked Beyers. For a moment there was
absolute silence. He leaned forward and
said, “Tell the men to love their wives”.

“Let Nature Give You A Run For
Your Money” - Taking part in a three
day stage trail run as part of a two
member team might be considered a
challenge in itself to most trail running
enthusiasts. Imagine meeting your team
mate for the first time the night before
the start of Stage One.
Although this was the case for Al Leslie
and Matthew Daneel at the 2013 ProNu-
tro AfricanX Trailrun the experience was
so memorable that they’ve teamed up
again for the 2014 event.
“For me the most memorable part of
the 2013 ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun
was the scenery, getting to know Matt,
bantering with the other runners and the
cold beer at the end.” said Al Leslie.
“We had serious post-race blues last
year,” continues Matthew Daneel. “We
couldn’t wait to rekindle the ‘bromance’
that AfricanX created for Al and me. We
had so much fun on the trails, plenty
of banter and laughs as we ran. We
managed a 10th overall finish last year
and we would love to improve on that.”
South Africa’s most exciting three day
stage trail run, the ProNutro AfricanX
returns to Elgin/Grabouw at the Festi-
val Village on the grounds of the Houw
Hoek Inn during the weekend of 14 – 16
March 2014.
Teamwork forms an essential part
of this event, with participants having
to rely on each other’s experience,
strength and expertise in order to com-
plete the route. Teams of two (male/
female/mixed) will be seen battling it out
on a route varying in distance between
25-38km each day.
The three routes have been planned
in such a way that the participants will
have the opportunity to tackle a different
scenic route each day, allowing them to
enjoy the full beauty of the Overberg.

Paintkor 17 Frangipani Street Somerset West 7130 Cell: 082 425 9944 E-mail: tub.paintkor@gmail.com Specialist in Painting, Waterproofing, Powerwashing, Roof Cleaning & Painting TUBBY CURRIE iFix Founder & CEO Alex Fourie Alex Fourie, 27 year old founder of iFix is one of the South Africans that is included in Forbes Magazine’s list of top 10 most promising young African Entre- preneurs. It all started in 2006 when Alex was a student at Stellenbosch University. His iPod broke and he was told that it could not be fixed, but as his iPod was the centre of his life then and as he’d listen to music on his way to class, he could not do so. However, this disappoint- ment didn’t stop him from trying to fix it himself. He bought various parts online and fixed it by watching a YouTube video. His friend’s iPod also broke and he fixed it the same way. After he repaired a few, he decided to place an advert in the Cape Ads. He had immediate response and received 15 - 20 phone calls a day of people that had the same problem. Soon thereafter he employed a friend that was study- ing engineering and they started doing repairs for people. iFix was born in 2007 after satisfied friends referred other dis- satisfied Apple product owners in search of Apple repairs. During an interview with FIN24 Alex stated: “We work closely with our overseas suppliers. We are an out of warranty replacement centre and act as a 3rd party and not affiliated to Apple”. After six months iFix opened a small store in Cape Town and more full-time staff were hired. Today, 6 years later iFix repairs and services all Apple products, Samsung Smartphones and expanded into selling phone accessories. iFix currently operates 8 stores coun- trywide with its head office in Cape Town, and stores in Canal Walk and Stellen- bosch, as well as regional branches in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban. Alex’s Advice for potential entrepreneurs “Do something for yourself, something you are passionate about. Anything you believe in and make sure you do it well. Don’t do something for money.” Forbes Young African Entrepreneurs - Alex Fourie BMW HELDERVIEW NEW X5 LAUNCH Continued from page 1 About the New BMW X5 The X5, founder of the Sports Activity Vehicle segment and globally best-selling car in its class, with more than 1.3 million units sold since the launch of the first generation – is entering a new chapter in its successful history. 31 Maart Kirstenbosch Treetop Canopy Walkway opening soon The Treetop Canopy Walkway at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden under construction Photo Credit: Adam Harrower Mark Thomas and Henry Fagan's project, the Kirstenbosch Treetop Canopy Walkway at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden has a uniquely South African twist. The construction of the structure is almost complete with the formal opening to the public in April. The Treetop Canopy Walkway also nicknamed the “boomslang” is a 130m-long skeletal structure that twists 11.5m above the indigenous arboretum, also known as the Enchanted Forest. It curves between the trees and through the branches and joins the forest floor in two different places. The Walkway was built to celebrate the Kirstenbosch Centenary with a project that would be permanent, spectacular, unique and long lasting. Visitors will be able to experience the forest from high above, while seeing birds and other animals that are generally hard to see. The walkway will also provide a breathtaking 360 degree view of Cape Town and the Peninsula. The walkway will be free to walk on. A garden entry ticket is all that is required. • 6. TRAVEL THE NEWSPAPERPAGE 6 As online internet travel booking sites are exploding, everybody is wondering if travel agents will be around much longer. The younger traveller and budget travellers get information and book their trips online where there is no need for a travel agent. During the recession in 2009 the tra- ditional travel agents were hardest hit, losing nearly a quarter of their income. Other forms of travel agents emerged since targeting corporate, luxury, spe- cialized and niche travellers who value personal relationships with clients over budget savings. Even with the widespread availability of online booking options, some travel- lers prefer the personalized service of a travel agency. Unlike major booking sites, travel agencies provide expert advice, access to exclusive deals, and even phone and email support while travelling. In order to get the most out of your agency’s services, you should take the time to select the right travel agency for your needs. Some travel agencies take a general approach to offering services and work with many types of clients. If you have particular travel needs, you might con- sider working with a speciality travel agency. These agencies have extensive experience providing customized travel services to certain types of customers. Here are some types of speciality travel agencies you can choose from: Business travel - Speciality agen- cies focus on providing travel services to clients who are primarily interested in business trips, also known as corporate travel. As business travellers have to be at a place at a certain time they are not always looking for the best deals. They provide services to companies for conferences, trade shows, business meetings, training events, and work- shops. When you work with a business travel agency, you can be assured that your agent will manage your trip around your meeting or event including flight booking, transportation, accommoda- tion, visa requirements and excursions. Business travel agents can also ensure that employees can travel on the same flights, have seats next to each other on the airplane, stay in the same hotel and have coordinate ground trans- portation to and from the event. Travel agents with a good knowledge of the world will be an advantage when faced with solving problems in overseas des- tinations. Luxury - Luxury travel agents serve customers who are interested in luxury tourism and don’t mind paying for it. Like most other travel agents, they book flights, reserve luxury hotel accommo- dation, and schedule activities at the customer’s destination. British Airwaysin the News British Airways currently operates two daily flights to Cape Town since October 2013 until the end of March; it being the busy Cape summer season. For the winter season commencing May 2014, the airline will increase flights on the London/Cape Town route by three flights a week. Other British Airways news include British Airways A380 special fly-past Table Mountain, Man versus Machine and the launch of the British Airways Credit Card. British Airways A380 special fly- past Table Mountain - A British Airways A380 special fly-past of the Cape Town landmark, Table Mountain took place on 5 February, 2014. The fly past cel- ebrated the start of BA’s A380 service from London to Johannesburg that com- menced on 12 February operating from London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 to OR Tambo, and will increase to six weekly flights by March 2014. The air-to-air photoshoot saw the A380 fly over Robben Island, followed by a fly past Table Mountain from Lion’s Head towards Devil’s Peak. This has been the first time that an Airbus A380 has ever flown over Table Mountain, a World Heritage site. Man versus Machine - British Airways celebrated the launch of A380 direct flights to Johannesburg on 12th Feb- ruary 2014. As part of the celebrations they offered five people from around the world a once in a lifetime opportunity to prove they have what it takes to race the new A380 superjumbo on the runway in Durban. The challenge came after South African rugby legend, Bryan Habana’s sprint against the aircraft caught global attention last year, to become one of the top 10 most-watched YouTube videos of 2013. In the end the 23-year-old Project Manager from Cape Town, Rudolph Raath, took the crown to become the fastest runner on the day. Raath won two business class return tickets on one of British Airways’ A380 direct flights to London. Following the incredible success of the original video, British Airways also offered to donate two Club World tickets to FoodBank SA, an organisation which facilitates the provision of 11 million meals in South African communities with Continue Reading Page 8 They also provide other services including travel insurance, and visa requirements. They differ from other travel agents by seeking extraordinary travel destinations and provide personal assistance to the luxury traveller. Exam- ples of luxury tourism can include exotic vacations and honeymoons, chartering private jets and hiring personal chauf- feurs. Group travel - If you are taking a trip with family or a large group, a group travel agency can streamline flights, bus trips, accommodation bookings, and other travel needs. They might also be able to secure group rates for tours, attractions, and ground transportation to save money. Using a group travel agency can take the stress out of travel- ling with a large group, and can help you enjoy a vacation without spending a fortune. International travel - Travelling abroad is more complex than taking a domestic vacation. Your interna- tional travel agency can help you with customs and practices of your destina- tion to ensure that your trip is enjoyable and hassle-free. Your specialist can also provide guidance for obtaining pass- ports and finding your way in a foreign country. Other types of speciality travel agen- cies you can choose from include ocean or river cruises, African Safari, railway journeys, and much more. • 8. BUSINESS THE NEWSPAPERPAGE 8 FRANSCHHOEK STATION PUB & CRAFT BAR A Station, a Pub, a Craft Bar, a Braai - no passengers standing on the platform awaiting the departure of the Steam train, but rather, passengers seated at the craft bar counter awaiting the coolness of a craft beer, children playing on the railway lines where once the Steam train was bellowing steam, and other passengers, some on the other side of the railway lines having a braai and many enjoying the hospital- ity of the new Station Master, Andre Niemand. This is what has become of the old-old tradition of the steam of yester year. For many years Franschhoek Station was the centre of post, goods and the export of fruit and wine. Today, the newly appointed Station Master has stepped up his crew and imported the likes of a chef to replace the “laaimeester”. Final hurdle for Gilliam in becoming a Chartered Accountant It all started in 2002 when the Swieg- ers family moved from Pretoria to Greenways Estate in Strand. While attending high school Gilliam and his older brothers started their own carwash business to earn extra income. Gilliam laughed when he told The Newspaper that being the youngest he had to do all the dirty work by washing the wheels and vacuum the cars, while his brothers washed the outside of the cars. He immediately showed leader- ship skills by taking the role of dealing with the customers and managing the finances. A true characteristic of a future entrepreneur! A year later Gilliam found himself all on his own in the carwash business as his older brothers withdrew leaving him with a sense of loyalty towards the existing customers. He stepped up the business to the next level establishing “Gilliam’s Callwash” and getting somebody to help him. Together they motivated each other during the difficult times as well as getting through their busy time schedule. He worked endlessly after school, on weekends, on public holidays and even once on an early cold winter morning before going to school. He secured many loyal customers over the time. One of these customers assisted him to invest his savings while another gave him a loan to buy a scooter to make his work load easier. He was motivated by his customers and felt thankful as they always appreciated his hard work. A few years later he become financially independent and managed his own bookkeeping and finances. His record, with the assistance of a helper, stands at 21 cars washed in one single day! Time management was of great importance to Gilliam. He had to plan his work, car wash schedule, and his studies carefully. After completing Grade 12 success- fully the Accounting firm, Germishuys Zandstra Incorporated employed Gilliam as a student clerk while he enrolled as a BComp student at Unisa. This was the start of his career in auditing while washing cars after work and staying up late nights studying. Not to mention weekends and holidays he had to give up to cover the great volume of study material over the past 6 years. During this period Gilliam bought his own car and the scooter was used by one of his assistants to do the work at hand. It was not always easy for him to focus on the various tasks at hand. He never had any spare time for himself except for working and studying. In 2011 he started fading out the carwash business to focus on his studies. He could not set aside his loyal customers and continued to help out where he could and in 2011 he washed his last car in Greenways. Gilliam completed his articles at Ger- mishuys Zandstra Inc in four years. After graduating in 2011 he completed his Honours Degree in 2013. He recently wrote the first of two SAICA board exam- inations in the final hurdle to become a Chartered Accountant. Today it feels good to see his old customers and relive the carwash days in Greenways. Due to his hectic time schedule, there is never any free time, yet, he manages to do fitness training regularly. The training builds endurance rather than bodybuilding, and disciplines you to complete sections within specific time periods. As we know Giliam, he pushes his body to the extreme limit until he reaches his goals. Gilliam’s method to success is Endurance, Discipline and Motivation “My advice to all the youngsters who want to reach their dream is to work hard, discipline yourself, focus on the task at hand and make intelligent deci- sions and motivate yourself to succeed in any area of life.” Gilliam, we at The Newspaper have known you since the day you started your own carwash business. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH Driving alongside the picturesque vineyards toward Mont Marie, a relaxed presence fills your every desire toward an evening of non-molecular fine dining, but rather fine dining in real food. Mont Marie, a Restaurant of Distinction was conceived through the passion- ate drive of the 27 year old Pieter Vlok and the kind support of Whitey Basson who made Pieter’s dream a reality. In support of his passion, Pieter as owner and Executive Chef also has the backup support of his Sous Chef Alex Skeate and his general manager Suzanne Maree. On entering Mont Marie Restaurant you are met by the hospitality of the front of house manager who guides you to the terrace overlooking the splen- dour of the dam and the beauty of the Blaauwklippen Valley surrounded by the gracious Hottentots Holland Mountains, with the setting sun changing the land- scape scenery every few minutes. The interior is well designed and modern styled, with an open plan kitchen where the delightful dishes are prepared. Feeling relocated to another world, Chef Pieter makes his appearance with a word of welcome while we sample homemade bread, poppy seed lavash, deep fried chicken wings, with a honey & mustard sauce and garlic emulsion. The dishes on the menu are well selected with a choice of either a two or three course meal. The Lamb Bobotie starter with lamb as an ingredient melts in your mouth, not to mention the perfect combination of flavours of the deep fried calamari on a rosti with aioli, wasabi mayonnaise, and home-made sweet chilli sauce which stimulates the taste buds. The Pork Belly as a main course served with roasted vegetables, apple sauce and a soy sauce was out of this world. The medium Beef Sirloin was cooked to perfection with a jus comple- menting the dish. The Vegetarian dishes are not forgotten and one can indulge in the Falafel served with confit potatoes and coleslaw with Malay mayonnaise. To end a stunning evening with perfect food, treat yourself to the Lemon & Poppy seed soufflé with lemon purée, home-made lemon ice cream and crème pâtissière. Should you like something less sweet, the Vanilla Panna Cotta with fresh fruit, almonds and home-made chocolate & raspberry ice cream is a winner. A new addition to the dessert menu is the coffee cake with chocolate mousse, mascarpone cream, home- made vanilla ice cream and espresso. Compliments to Pieter Vlok; the start- up of Mont Marie Restaurant a few months ago is well received. South Africa is soon to undergo a change in Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) as Lumidigm plans to intro- duce machines that don’t need a card with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to draw cash. Unlike PINs, crimi- nals will have great difficulty in faking a fingerprint to access someone’s bank account. “The technology will rely on a finger- print reader to verify the identity of a banking customer and permit access to an account. The use of biometrics as a method of identity is far superior to a PIN,” says Lumidigm, the company developing the technology for SA. This technology is successful in Brazil and Kenya to cut down on bank fraud. Bloemhof Astro Hockey Field Breaking Ground Some banks may retrofit existing ATMs, while others may design new ATMs with this technology in place. Some security experts say, while bank card fraud would be erased through fingerprint authentication, this does not rule out threats that could compromise the financial and personal security of the customer. The developer of the technol- ogy says that such fears are unfounded as the technology can check to see whether a finger is “alive”. The fully biometric system may be lim- iting people who usually send relatives to conduct ATM transactions on their behalf, because the system requires that you have to present yourself to be scanned in order to access your account. A dream come true - After many years in the planning Bloemhof will have its own astro hockey field. Construction under the control of the QS Ben van Rooyen saw the first sods moved as the official announcement. Delivery of the Astro hockey field is expected during May 2014. Esmé’s “legacy” is everywhere visible on the Beyerskloof Estate. She walked the soil of Beyerskloof as the “beloved” of her Heavenly Father. She fulfilled her responsibility not only toward her Heavenly Father, but also, toward her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was perfected before her Heav- enly Father, before the sudden return of her breath to be home with the Father. It was an employee who later said that Esmé was the one with whom the workers could share their challenges; the one who would assist with love and compassion in their everyday need. Soft spoken, out of the limelight Esmé’s pres- ence grew Beyerskloof in Beyers that it may be said, “Here’s to her Legacy”. It is the Esmé of Beyers who became the “beloved” winemaker in Beyers who set forth as the winemaker of Beyerskloof unto becoming the nomi- nated Winemaker of the Month. The interview with the Newspaper was filled with the presence of Esmé. It became LIFESTYLETHE NEWSPAPER PAGE 13 Wine Maker of the Month 40 Years ago On a blind date almost 40 years earlier Esmé became the love of Beyers. It was her parents who sent her from Nama- qualand to Cape Town at a young age to find herself a job. She ended up at Stellenbosch Univer- sity as a personal assistant to “Oom” Albie Basson. It was this same Esmé whom Beyers married in 1979. Esmé’s Legacy Esmé’s departure may have been final to the heart of men, but when looking around Beyerskloof, she is everywhere to be seen. Beyerskloof’s emblem is a true reflection of her compassion for the Estate. She carefully prepared the final print of the Pinotage Logo after placing a red leave to dry in a book. Wine by the Pinotage King The Beyerskloof philosophy is a truth- ful expression of the God given talents received. It shines through in the com- mitment of the Beyerskloof Winemakers to produce wines of exceptional quality, a commitment which has earned Beyerskloof international acclaim. Great wine requires faith. The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness. The juice was made in open fermenters, on the skins for 5-6 days at an average temperature of 26°C. Punching of the cap was done every 2 hours to extract good colour and flavours from the grapes. The Faith blend is a barrel selection of the best wines from the 2010 vintage in the Beyerskloof cellar. Faith is a Super Premium Cape Blend reflecting the true char- acter of Beyerskloof’s diversity and boldness. This wine is a testament of Beyerskloof’s faith in Pinotage and in their Maker. Here’s to Diesel, my best friend Diesel, Beyers’ closest silent partner, his dog named Diesel with a heart of gold, walked the vineyards with him. Diesel became the brand name of a take-me-seriously bottle Pinotage, named the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage. The songo.info organisa- tion has grown from humble beginnings and is a powerful collaboration between Christoph Sauser, world champion mountain biker and Songo Fipaza, a well-recognised local community leader. Sauser rides for songo.info since 2008 to uplift the community of Kayamandi near Stellenbosch, where Fipaza lived for years and works tirelessly to bring about change in the community. Sauser recognised the opportunity to connect his global network to the man who was working so hard to help make children’s dreams possible. Sauser feels that the kids look up to him. “They’d also like to become pro riders and win the Absa Cape Epic. It’s so important to have goals in life!” Sauser is intensely involved with some of the songo.info riders’ training programmes. When he is in Stellen- bosch he plans Sipho Madolo’s training programme and trains with him almost every day where Chistoph adds much professionalism and fun to their training!
