  6. Baby Boomers Out!College Graduates will be managersWorkers are teenagers todayGen X will be in chargeLove of TechnologyCompetition in the Global MarketDemocratization and Consumerization of Software continuesThe people doing the collaborating will be entirely digital natives. Most of the baby boomers will be out of the workforce in 10 years. Anyone who is just entering the workforce after college will be 32 years old and important decision makers. If not them, those who are in their late 20s or early 30s will be in their 40s in real positions of power, but living in a much more competitive world. They will be wielding collaborative technologies not for productivity, but because they love the technology and must use it to compete in the global market place. The democratization and consumerization of software will not stop and will continue with at least linearly.
  7. Psychology and Neuroscience are moving aheadWhat are humans good at and not good at?Identifying patterns and applying creativityNot good at objective decisions and deluding ourselvesAccess to facts, statistics and analytical capacityApply to any question and test assumptionsProvide alternative outcomesGetting work done and smooth human conflictDesign of collaborative and information software will be informed by a greater understanding of our psychology of what we as humans are good and not good at. Software will be able to learn what our intentions are and be able to explicitly ask what we have intended implicitly by asking, "Are you sure about that?" or "Is this what you really meant?" Humans are great at picking out patterns, relating to one another and being able to apply creativity to any problem. We are not good necessarily at making informed decisions or preventing ourselves from being deluded by our own internalized stories of coherent success. Software that has all the facts, statistics and analytical capacity to bear on a question can test assumptions and provide alternative outcomes to our decisions. This can also help us along to get work done or to even potentially smooth out problems between human beings.
  8. Artificial IntelligenceAnalyticsMachine LearningMap / ReduceBrute Force Problem SolvingCatWith what will be virtually unlimited computing, networking and space capacity by our standards today, any problem of complexity will be overcome and simplified by a combination of artificial intelligence, high-capacity analytics, sophisticated map/reduce processing and just sheer brute force computing. No action, image or moment need be unrecorded and all possible combinations of what information could look like can be computed. Where we have maybe one or a few computers in the Cloud helping our authoring and publishing actions today, we will have dozens to hundreds of more powerful computers helping us. Smart correction and spell checking will become as innovative as a manual typewriter.

  10. Spreadsheets are more likely to be online and although they will keep their familiar grid and tab structure, changes down to the cell and character level along with sophisticated cutting, pasting and tracking will make for a more dynamic and revealing experience. Few people really know how to use something like Excel properly, but smart software will have models already built and will help us with what we intend to do with the data and take care of the hard stuff. Imagine being able to review the commentary of the changes around a single cell in the spreadsheet and how that affected outcomes in the business. This could be absolutely revolutionary in business as whole financial markets run on spreadsheets as well as all business planning, issue tracking and even customer relationship management.
  11. Twitter and Facebook introduced the modern conversationThreaded conversations are taking over our discourse and controlling our authoringDiscern themes, intentions and decisionsMachine awarenessRich media and video – disassembledTranslation and TranscriptionsDrawings and sketchingThe new paradigms of documents that will complement current forms  - text, spreadsheet and presentation - are around threaded conversations and rich media. Twitter has only been around a few years and Facebook less than 10, but these may influence how we look at information. Threaded conversations may end up taking over a large space that was left to straight textual documents and emails. Developed in bite sized or even byte sized chunks that may magically transform into coherent narratives through automated organization and artificial intelligence. We will be able to discern themes, intentions and decisions in these conversations as they pop out through intelligent highlighting and machines are aware of the consequences of previous conversations and that have learned the way we think and communicate. Rich media may replace much of the written word since if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video can be worth a thousand. Rich media will much more navigable than it is today, especially as smart software will be able to disassemble video, edit it and put into different forms, including translation and transcription, for easier search and consuming. Drawings and sketch, animated with the help of software, may replace a lot of text as a better to way to communicate some ideas.
  12. Over last ten years, the creative, intuitive sideBetter than computers and softwarePrevious for left-brained, intelligentArt, music, imagery, connections, humanity, creativitySystems of Record – libraries, analytics, facts, truthSystems of Engagement – fun tools, need for communication, psychological flowLike a video game – compelling and engagingGamification may become the very essence of collaborationSystems of engagement and collaborative technologies will become the more dominant part of software even in the enterprise. [more later]Over the last 10 years, software has become increasingly "right-brained", meaning that it works with and enhances our more creative, intuitive side - the very thing that we are better at than computers and software. Whereas previous generations of software had been designed by and for left-brained, intelligent computing types, recent web-based software has been more about our creative and artistic side around art, music, imagery, connections, humanity and creativity itself. This has given rise to the paradigms of Systems of Record, our left-brained memory, libraries and analytics of what are the facts and what determines the truth, and Systems of Engagement, the compelling and sometimes fun tools that taps into our need to communicate and to enter into our notion of psychological "flow" or concentration. Collaborative software will start to become more like a video game - compelling and engaging. It could be something you want to do rather than just need to do. Gamification may become the very essence of collaboration.
  13. Search and Retrieval driven by ContextAnalysis and pattern recognition of rich mediaContext derived from location, meetings, usageTime sequence will revolve around relevant eventsDecisions and intentions will inform search resultsVisualization will be important to simplify complexitySearch and retrieval of information will be about who updated it and it's context, location, intention, description and understanding of content. I should be able to ask for "that picture with the woman with the red dress that looks like Kate Winslet" or "that presentation that you gave at the second meeting with had with Acme in Chicago back in July". Context can be derived by who was there, why were we there and what happened afterwards. Location forms such an important part of our memories that it should be just be part of the document history. Our decisions and our intentions also play an important role in our memory of documents, so I should be able to ask for that first draft of the document or the "sales report just before we decided to fire Bob." Search should also be more visual rather than a textual expression. I should be able to draw out what data sets, locations, organizations I want to search with maybe some illustrative examples of what the output should be like. With the complexity of this rising on a 2-dimensional plane, search may be one of the first areas other than display or video production to incorporate 3D manipulation technology. A 3D space for searching becomes the stuff of "Minority Report" comes to the enterprise.Social software today is like a special type of proactive search.
  14. Author controls what we readWe control how we read itStrip the drivel, ads and repetition – Get to the pointPoint out factual errors, issues and decisionsDocuments will format themselves – device-specificAutomatic translation and summarizationAnticipate our every preferenceOnce we find the information, our preferences rather than the authors should take over in what we see. The author may control what we read, but we should control how we read it. Our smart software should strip out the drivel and repetition and help us get to the point. Our software should be able to also help point out factual errors, issues that may arise or decisions that have been made. If we are reading it through our handheld device, our tablet, our home video screen, our virtual reality glasses or even a giant cinema screen, documents should format themselves. And the reader is less likely to speak English than not. A document in Mandarin may have completely different concepts and ways of expressing the same information than in English, but we would still like to really understand it. The software should know and anticipate all our preferences and handle them appropriately.Who: Mobile Worker born with technologyWhere: Field Location – Sales or InspectionContext: Location, Task, Customer/EquipWhat:Augmented RealityInternet of Things floats DocumentsSimple Gesture for SearchArtificial IntelligenceWearable InterfacesAuto-capture
  15. Collaboration between peopleCollaboration between processesCommunication + InformationClusters are strongerAugmented Reality with Overlays of InformationAutomated CollaboratorsCollaboration may not just be between people, but with our computing resources that don't really live anywhere but in the Cloud. Collaboration will still have a strong communication component, but will still also be around information around the form of documents. Michael Porter's research at Harvard indicates that with the Internet, clusters of industry and specialization are not going, but are actually being strengthened. These means that face to face is still very important and will probably be so in 10 years time. Still these meetings will be enhanced with augmented reality that overlays information next to the people or things with which we are collaborating. We may also find that our automated collaborators are more reliable than our human ones down the corridor.Who: Team – 4 local, 2 remote – in their teens todayWhere: Office with High-Tech TableContext: Business Problem, Customer, ProductWhat:Scrum-like Meetings and PlanningHigh-Tech TableVirtual Participants at TableAuto-suggestionArtificial Intelligence / Capture

  17. Sophisticated Security, Identity and AuthenticationProcesses can expand the four wallsInformation moves beyond the enterpriseInternational Law and ReformRules to control access and updateIntelligent alerts on a need to know basisAutomatic cleanup of de-authorized informationDocuments & Circles of trust will be the ultimate authorityAnalysts replaced by best practices and intelligent softwareStatistically-based design informed by successful outcomesDeclared intentions turned into smart processesNatural language will start processes like review, approval or releaseCommunications will be set up immediately to deal with issues swiftly with full contextSoftware will make recommendations based upon an extensive fact baseThis collaboration, simplified through sophisticated security, identity and authentication technology, can start to expand beyond the four walls of the enterprise. More and more information will move beyond the enterprise, but that does not mean that we will be handing this information over to third parties without a lot of assurances or control over this information ourselves. Rules for who can access information and who can update information will be controlled with a level of which the CIA would be envious today and yet be no harder than stating what groups or people you intended to do what. On a need to know basis, people will be aware of what is happening with appropriate, intelligent alerts of what is happening with their projects. Cleanup of no longer authorized information will be swift. Documents and circles of trust will be the ultimate authority of access to information driven by the business.Business processes that require business analysts to define today, will be replaced by industry best practices that are statistically driven and informed by success of outcomes of other projects, tasks and actions. Business processes will fall in line with declared intentions of what is intended to happen next and will be up to the software to figure out how to accomplish that. Adaptability will be the key driver in these processes as patterns of exceptions are either incorporated into the process or are dealt with simply. The whole idea of review and approval will be driven by the statement "I'd like Sally and Kumar to look this over so that I can release this by Friday" will be automated by collaboration software. Communication lines will be automatically set up and issues dealt with swiftly and in context of the information itself. The machines themselves will also make recommendations based upon a comprehensive fact base that extends beyond the enterprise.
