We all want our lives to count.
We all want our lives to count.
We all want our lives to count.
So we should take a count of our lives.
We all want our lives to count.
And measure what matters.
What’s Inside
• Our Vision
• Our Platform
• Why Values?
• Next Steps
• Needs
• The Team
Our Vision is “Connecting Happiness to Action.”
Our Vision
Our Vision: “Connecting Happiness to Action.”
Research suggests that wellbeing increases when people are
ALTRUISTIC and LIVE ACCORDING to their VALUES. Our work is
designed to enable people to help others through actions that
reflect their values, thereby INCREASING their HAPPINESS.
We are Connecting Citizens to their Communities.
When people can’t live according to their values, their happiness
decreases. But often we don’t think about our values or how they affect
us. We’ve created a SURVEY for people to REALIZE their values, TRACK
their behaviors, and IDENTIFY areas of their lives that are out of balance.
These values will be connected to LOCAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES,
which will help users LIVE OUT THEIR VALUES and INCREASE THEIR
HAPPINESS.
We are Connecting Cities to their Citizens.
COMMUNITY VALUES are reflected in WELLBEING INDEXES that are now
beginning to complement standard GDP metrics in countries around the
world. We’ve created a WORKSHOP that helps city officials and citizens
identify SHARED VALUES to create ACTIONABLE CAMPAIGNS that measure
and optimize happiness. The Workshop works in conjunction with our
SURVEY, soon to be available as an app.
Our Vision is “Connecting Happiness to Action.”
The Basics
• We’re a non-profit Foundation launched on March 20, 2013.
• We have hosted over 14 workshops worldwide in locations including:
• London, Oslo, Bogota, Tokyo, Dubai, Lisbon, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Cincinnati,
Indianapolis and the country of Bhutan.
• Board/Committee Members come from top organizations:
• The United Nations, World Economic Forum, UPENN, salesforce.com, Microsoft, and Intel.
• We have been featured in multiple publications:
• USA Today, Forbes, Mashable, Fast Company, BBC News, and The Huffington Post.
• Our Founder has spoken about our work in multiple cities around the world, in a TEDx
talk, and in an upcoming book , Hacking H(app)iness, to be published by Penguin books.
• We have partnered with local cities to Pilot our work:
• Reading, PA: Testing our new workshop/survey platform.
• Somerville, MA: Testing and launching our App.
Our Platform (workshop + survey/app)
wrth
Proof of Concept
We have partnered with the CITY
OF READING, PA to implement and
test the wrth platform. On March
6, 2014, we will launch our first
WRTH Workshop.
The Pagoda - Mt. Penn, Reading, PA
The Wrthshop
Important Life Areas
• Income
• Employment Rate
• Housing
• Work Satisfaction
• Health
• Educational Attainment
• Community
• Civic Engagement
• Environment
• Life Satisfaction
For the past seventy years, city and country
wellbeing has largely been measured by how
much money people make (Gross Domestic
Product).
Wellbeing Indexes, which assess multiple
important areas of life, provide citizens and
cities the opportunity to measure themselves
in a new light, and:
See their wrth beyond wealth.
The Wrthshop
Our workshops teach attendees about the intersection of:
• Technology: The devices we carry in our pockets can be used to measure data that
reveals our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
• Economics: The value of our lives is based on multiple metrics beyond wealth.
• Positive Psychology: Scientific methods that increase people’s long-term happiness and
wellbeing.
After gaining this foundation, attendees break into teams of six to eight people:
• Teams brainstorm city campaign ideas focused on values.
• Each team presents their ideas to the group in two to three minutes.
• Attendees vote to choose ideas best suited for their city/citizens.
• Winning campaign idea(s) will be used to launch the city’s customized survey/app.
The Survey/App
We’ve created a SURVEY (app coming soon) which
will be launched in Reading, PA, designed to:
1. Provide a general assessment of SUBJECTIVE
WELLBEING for users.
1. Lets users TRACK THEIR VALUES over multiple
days to see when they’re living in accordance
with their values.
1. Provide users with a “PHI” (Personal
Happiness Indicator) Score that reflects which
values are optimized/blocked.
• This score will be used to connect a user to a
volunteer opportunity in their area.
The Survey/App
Individual values will be aggregated
across users to show trends in citizen
tracking throughout the city.
This data will provide actionable
insights for a city, such as:
• Why one neighborhood is more
focused on FAMILY.
• Why another neighborhood feels
blocked regarding EDUCATION.
Why Values?
Why Focus on Values?
• PEOPLE NEED TO FEEL THAT THEIR LIVES MATTER.
• Dozens of apps/companies measure happiness and mood. But simply measuring
happiness disregards the daily context of life.
• No apps that we are aware of measure VALUES.
• We want to fill this void, helping people TRACK AND DISCOVER WHAT’S MOST
IMPORTANT TO THEIR LIVES, by providing CUSTOMIZED ACTIONS that will increase
their own happiness while helping others in their communities.
• Cities and workplaces are starting to measure wellbeing. The wrth Platform
complements these efforts. Our goal is to collaborate with the cities and
organizations we work with to HELP THEM MEASURE AND OPTIMIZE PEOPLE’S
WELLBEING.

The Power of Passive Sensors
• We are creating a mobile version of our Values
survey that will add passive sensor data
collection.
• Sensors like GPS (location), accelerometer
(motion), and touch-screen (stress) will provide
metrics that offer a deeper sense of
unobserved factors that impact a user’s
genuine wellbeing.
• By correlating active data with unobtrusive
passive sensors, we can understand and
potentially impact user wellbeing at a level
never before possible.
wrth Platform (Corporate)
Your wrth at work
• Numerous companies are interested in offering
our wrthshop in the workplace. We are
adapting our wrthshop and wrth Platform to
make this a possibility.
• From an organizational standpoint, the
revenue from these workshops will provide
more regular cash flow than from grant or
traditional non-profit funding. From a vision
standpoint, we feel connecting happiness to
action in the workplace is as essential in the
office as in a city.
Needs
Our Needs

The H(app)athon Project Vision, March 2014

  • 1.
  • 2. We all want our lives to count. We all want our lives to count.
  • 3. We all want our lives to count. So we should take a count of our lives.
  • 4. We all want our lives to count. And measure what matters.
  • 5. What’s Inside • Our Vision • Our Platform • Why Values? • Next Steps • Needs • The Team
  • 6. Our Vision is “Connecting Happiness to Action.” Our Vision
  • 7. Our Vision: “Connecting Happiness to Action.” Research suggests that wellbeing increases when people are ALTRUISTIC and LIVE ACCORDING to their VALUES. Our work is designed to enable people to help others through actions that reflect their values, thereby INCREASING their HAPPINESS.
  • 8. We are Connecting Citizens to their Communities. When people can’t live according to their values, their happiness decreases. But often we don’t think about our values or how they affect us. We’ve created a SURVEY for people to REALIZE their values, TRACK their behaviors, and IDENTIFY areas of their lives that are out of balance. These values will be connected to LOCAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES, which will help users LIVE OUT THEIR VALUES and INCREASE THEIR HAPPINESS.
  • 9. We are Connecting Cities to their Citizens. COMMUNITY VALUES are reflected in WELLBEING INDEXES that are now beginning to complement standard GDP metrics in countries around the world. We’ve created a WORKSHOP that helps city officials and citizens identify SHARED VALUES to create ACTIONABLE CAMPAIGNS that measure and optimize happiness. The Workshop works in conjunction with our SURVEY, soon to be available as an app.
  • 10. Our Vision is “Connecting Happiness to Action.” The Basics • We’re a non-profit Foundation launched on March 20, 2013. • We have hosted over 14 workshops worldwide in locations including: • London, Oslo, Bogota, Tokyo, Dubai, Lisbon, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and the country of Bhutan. • Board/Committee Members come from top organizations: • The United Nations, World Economic Forum, UPENN, salesforce.com, Microsoft, and Intel. • We have been featured in multiple publications: • USA Today, Forbes, Mashable, Fast Company, BBC News, and The Huffington Post. • Our Founder has spoken about our work in multiple cities around the world, in a TEDx talk, and in an upcoming book , Hacking H(app)iness, to be published by Penguin books. • We have partnered with local cities to Pilot our work: • Reading, PA: Testing our new workshop/survey platform. • Somerville, MA: Testing and launching our App.
  • 11. Our Platform (workshop + survey/app) wrth
  • 12. Proof of Concept We have partnered with the CITY OF READING, PA to implement and test the wrth platform. On March 6, 2014, we will launch our first WRTH Workshop. The Pagoda - Mt. Penn, Reading, PA
  • 13. The Wrthshop Important Life Areas • Income • Employment Rate • Housing • Work Satisfaction • Health • Educational Attainment • Community • Civic Engagement • Environment • Life Satisfaction For the past seventy years, city and country wellbeing has largely been measured by how much money people make (Gross Domestic Product). Wellbeing Indexes, which assess multiple important areas of life, provide citizens and cities the opportunity to measure themselves in a new light, and: See their wrth beyond wealth.
  • 14. The Wrthshop Our workshops teach attendees about the intersection of: • Technology: The devices we carry in our pockets can be used to measure data that reveals our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. • Economics: The value of our lives is based on multiple metrics beyond wealth. • Positive Psychology: Scientific methods that increase people’s long-term happiness and wellbeing. After gaining this foundation, attendees break into teams of six to eight people: • Teams brainstorm city campaign ideas focused on values. • Each team presents their ideas to the group in two to three minutes. • Attendees vote to choose ideas best suited for their city/citizens. • Winning campaign idea(s) will be used to launch the city’s customized survey/app.
  • 15. The Survey/App We’ve created a SURVEY (app coming soon) which will be launched in Reading, PA, designed to: 1. Provide a general assessment of SUBJECTIVE WELLBEING for users. 1. Lets users TRACK THEIR VALUES over multiple days to see when they’re living in accordance with their values. 1. Provide users with a “PHI” (Personal Happiness Indicator) Score that reflects which values are optimized/blocked. • This score will be used to connect a user to a volunteer opportunity in their area.
  • 16. The Survey/App Individual values will be aggregated across users to show trends in citizen tracking throughout the city. This data will provide actionable insights for a city, such as: • Why one neighborhood is more focused on FAMILY. • Why another neighborhood feels blocked regarding EDUCATION.
  • 18. Why Focus on Values? • PEOPLE NEED TO FEEL THAT THEIR LIVES MATTER. • Dozens of apps/companies measure happiness and mood. But simply measuring happiness disregards the daily context of life. • No apps that we are aware of measure VALUES. • We want to fill this void, helping people TRACK AND DISCOVER WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT TO THEIR LIVES, by providing CUSTOMIZED ACTIONS that will increase their own happiness while helping others in their communities. • Cities and workplaces are starting to measure wellbeing. The wrth Platform complements these efforts. Our goal is to collaborate with the cities and organizations we work with to HELP THEM MEASURE AND OPTIMIZE PEOPLE’S WELLBEING.
  • 19. Organization Primary Focus Connection to wrth Happify • Science driven social network and app • Consumer focus • Happify is H(app)athon Partner • We may recommend Happify to users Moodscope • Subjective wellbeing focus • Daily email/empowerment • We feature subjective wellbeing and life satisfaction questions Mappiness • Best in class active and passive data research • Great example to emulate • We also will focus on values OptimizeMe • Passive data focus • User sets multiple goals • This space is crowded • Too much for user to do Moves • Passive data focus, elegant • Physical health focus • Lacks active data perspective • We are open to aggregating data from these types of apps Happy Cities • Based in Bristol, UK • Doing great work • Great example to emulate • Our focus is more tech driven and includes wellbeing indices Competitive Landscape
  • 20.
  • 21. Timeline March 2014 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 wrth platform launch • Reading workshop • Values survey, v.1 July 2014 wrth (corporate) launch • Revenue driver • City insights help companies Sept 2014 wrth Miami launch • Details TBD • Drafting Proposal
  • 22. Values Survey/App, v.2 The Power of Passive Sensors • We are creating a mobile version of our Values survey that will add passive sensor data collection. • Sensors like GPS (location), accelerometer (motion), and touch-screen (stress) will provide metrics that offer a deeper sense of unobserved factors that impact a user’s genuine wellbeing. • By correlating active data with unobtrusive passive sensors, we can understand and potentially impact user wellbeing at a level never before possible.
  • 23. wrth Platform (Corporate) Your wrth at work • Numerous companies are interested in offering our wrthshop in the workplace. We are adapting our wrthshop and wrth Platform to make this a possibility. • From an organizational standpoint, the revenue from these workshops will provide more regular cash flow than from grant or traditional non-profit funding. From a vision standpoint, we feel connecting happiness to action in the workplace is as essential in the office as in a city.
  • 24. Needs
  • 25.
