- I will discuss development planned and in progress around the Navy Yard and Anacostia Annex. Our primary concern with all this development is traffic impact but there are opportunities developing for better amenities outside the gate such as food service, retail, and entertainment, especially as the area around the stadium develops.
- This is the area we are discussing. At ground level you may not see the potential but this aerial view shows the reason the City and the Developers are so excited about the area. There is little open ground elsewhere in the City. The Anacostia Park, on the left, is currently Federal land but is in the process of being transferred to the City. Land up river from WNY has been transferred.

- The City plans to build a new bridge at South Capitol Street then demo the old one. Not currently funded but a must-do project.
- Here is a concept for the land on our west boundary. Includes parkland, office & residential. The park is under construction and due to be finished this fall. There is a white tent visible which is the temporary home of a Trapeze school. GSA has transferred control of the property to Forrest City Washington, the developer, This is an active construction zone. It does not belong to the Navy, nor is it public space. Access is restricted . DON’T GO THERE
- This is what the 11 th Street Bridge looked like. It is undergoing a major renovation. They hope to finish by 2012.
- Plan is to build two new bridges between these two, then take down the old bridges. That will widen the bridges, add sidewalks and bike lanes. The City’s plan is to make both bridges 2-way.
- The most useful part of the plan is to add ramps on the EAST side to allow folks to get in directly from I-295 as you come south in the morning and get onto the freeway north-bound in the evening.
- They have removed the ramps, Both spans will be 2-way. 11 th Street will be 2-way. As you may be aware, there will be lane closures and the N Street underpass is already blocked off.
- The Marine Corps at 8 th & I is looking to replace an obsolete and non-compliant part of the barracks. That’s Building 20 just north of the freeway. They are presenting some possibilities to the community. Current viable locations are on their own site at 7 th Street and across M Street from the Yard between 8 th and 11 th .
- The area EAST of 11 th Street is poorly used. it has the potential for much more recreation. Maybe another lunch spot. this vision is in the early stages. There is no funding. the boathouse has been moved up the river to allow the bridge construction
- The streetcar will run from the Anacostia METRO to ANA. They are constructing the track bed. Timeline is Fall 2011 for operations. Long range, it will cross the 11 th Street bridge, run along M Street and down to Ft McNair.
- This site east of our installations, across I-295 and south of Barry Farms, is now owned by GSA. They recently swapped land with DC which now owns all the east campus. GSA is developing the WEST campus for the USCG, and eventually the rest of DHS What are the likely impacts? Too early to say.
- Poplar Point is the area on the east side of the Anacostia between the South Capitol Street and 11 th Street bridges. It is being transferred from National Park Service to the District. DC plans to develop it by selling it to a developer who will execute a plan approved by the City. Some hope for a Soccer Stadium and retail/office/residential uses. Navy has riverfront land south of the bridge. Our interests (security, Quality of Life, facilities) will be impacted by the bridge construction and DC Development. These are not DC’s concerns. We cannot expect them to look out for us.
- This sign tells you there is a multi-space meter Just because there is no meter, doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay Pay, get stub, put on dashboard.
- This is the DC Circulator. They have several routes. One runs from Union Station through Capitol Hill past Eastern Market METRO down 8 th, past the Yard to the Navy Yard METRO. Costs a dollar unless you use the card and connect to METRO. Then its 50 cents.
