6. Some basic info
• Launched January 19, 2006 from Cape Canaveral
• On July 14, 2015, at 11:49 UTC, it flew 12,500 km (7,800 mi) above the
surface of Pluto
• As of July 2015, the spacecraft was about 4.5 light-hours away from Earth.
At that distance, the spacecraft could only transmit data at 1 to 2 kb/s.
Thus, the transmission of all data from the Pluto system flyby will require
sixteen months.
• We have only received about half of the data gathered so far
• New Horizons has maneuvered for a flyby of Kuiper belt object 2014 MU69,
expected to take place on January 1, 2019, when it is 43.4 AU from the Sun.
