2. Language Arts Students will enhance skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Focus on fiction and non-fiction A regular focus will also be placed on spelling, grammar and organizational/study skills. 6+1 Writing Traits will be taught and practiced
4. Language Arts Some of the focus areas for this year: Reading: Poetic forms, vocabulary building, dictionary activities, investigative reading, Guided Reading Writing: Writing journal, proofreading, Gage Spelling, exploration and creation of original text, book reports Speaking: Totally Unbelievable Speaking Club, story sharing, drama presentations
5. Mathematics We will be looking at the following subject areas in this year’s mathematics program, based upon Manitoba Education’s curriculum: Patterns and Relations Statistics and Probability Shape and Space Number Functions and Qualities
6. Mathematics We will be using the MathFocus 7 series textbook. It is an excellent resource for learning the key concepts of grade 7 math. It also includes an online component at http://www.nelson.com/mathfocus/grade7/student/default.html
7. Science The grade 7 science program will be focused on these specific learning areas: Ecosystems Particle Theory of Matter Forces and Structures Earth’s Crust. There will be an equal emphasis on written work and hands-on practical applications (including experiments).
8. Social Studies The grade 7 social studies curriculum, focuses on People and Places in the World. We will be taking a look at many different world communities, including China and Brazil. Students will be working both individually and within groups, depending on the focus of the activity. The students will have the opportunity to showcase their efforts throughout the year.
9. French The students will be learning about many diverse and different subjects, starting with Myself, and then focusing on other themes, such as School and Home and Nature throughout the year. Instruction will also involve such special topics as the Festival Du Voyageur. Evaluation will be based on assignments and projects that include written and spoken criteria. Informal evaluations will be ongoing based on class participation and observations.
10. Art Projects will be hands-on, cumulative collections. The students will have an opportunity to showcase their collections to parents and peers throughout the year, and many of their projects will be put on display around the school. Students will be working with many forms of art, and there will be many different media used in class.
