10.4 & 10.5Culture of the 1920s
F. Scott Fitzgerald on America in the 20’s: “Here was a new generation…dedicated more than the last to the fear of poverty and the worship of success; grown up to find…all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken.”
From the “Pittsburgh Observer” 1922: “There has been a change for the worse during the past year in feminine dress, dancing, manners, and general moral standards. One should realize the serious ethical consequences of immodesty in girls’ dress.”
From an article in a Russian newspaper 1925: “In New York I saw 7,000,000 two-legged animals penned in an evil smelling cage…streets as unkempt as a Russian steppe…rubbish, waste paper, cigar butts…One glance and you know no master hand directs.”
Poets and Writers Carl Sandberg was a poet who glorified the midwest and the American life. T.S. Eliot was a poet who wrote the famous poem The Hollow Men Eugene O’Neil was a Playwright, and his plays were realistic situations about life Ernest Hemingway was a writerwho wrote about WWI in A Farewell to Arms F. Scott Fitzgerald was a writer who wrote about society in The Great Gatsby Many of these writers became known as the “Lost Generation” because they moved to Europe out of displeasure towards “rich ignorance” in the US
Sports Due to shorter work days and more money from factories, people had more time to watch and play sports. Babe Ruth who played for the New York Yankees hit 60 home runs in 1927. Lou Gehrig started his consecutive game streak in 1925. (2,130 consecutive games) Boxer Jack Dempsey held the heavyweight title from 1919 to 1926. Golfer Bobby Jones is still considered the greatest. He designed Augusta National (The Masters).
Ruth’s 60 Home Run Season In 1927, Babe Ruth set the first truly long-term single season home run standard. However, his first Major League home run record was established during the 1919 season when he connected a then unbelievable twenty-nine times with the Boston Red Sox. The 1919 plateau was considered at the time an "unreachable mark" until the following year when the Bambino smashed his own record by going deep fifty-four times — then beat that record just one year later when he went deep fifty-nine times. A few seasons passed and the 1920 record seemed safe until 1927, when the Sultan of Swat blasted sixty long balls in just one-hundred fifty-one games.
