2. Questions
• What are film trailers?
Film trailers are a way of marketing a future a film. They show little clips of the film and have brief text,
including the cast and release date for the film. They can attract people to see a film as they appeal to
specific target audiences and give an insight into the film.
• Why are they made?
They are made to attract an audience to see the film and give them an insight into what it is about. They
are made to raise awareness of an audience and attract them to see the film.
• Who are they for?
Trailers are aimed at the same audience that the film is aimed at. Certain features will attract a person to
see a film and trailers are made for the people who are likely to have an interest in the film.
• How do they work?
Each film needs to have a USP (Unique selling point). This will help show viewers how one film is
different to another. This may be special effects, a mix of genres or a popular starring cast member.
• Where do we see them?
We see movie trailers in the cinema before we watch another film, on the television along with other
adverts and on the internet including YouTube. Dedicated movie sites and the official movie website will
include trailers and posters will often accompany them.
• When are they released
Trailers are usually released when the film is being edited and they are also released in advance to
generate excitement about it, but not too early that people forget.
3. The promotional campaign will have a
large impact on how the film is
viewed.
“We no longer simply consume marketing
campaigns; we’ve become active participants
in them, as can be seen in the recent trend in
transmedia storytelling. Today, the movie
released in cinemas is just one part of a wider
narrative jigsaw that stretches beyond the
confines of the theatre and across other forms
of media.”
4. Peter Berg’s movie Battleship grossed a 3-
day total of $25 million, with $7.5 million of
this being grossed on the day of release. It
earned $58 million in total on its opening
weekend ranking second behind Titanic 3D.
The reason this movie has done so well in its
first few days of release is due to the
marketing campaign. Without their
advertising scheme, not many people will
have known about the movie, so far fewer
people will have seen it in this short space of
time.
The Earlier posters show both the title of the
movie in bold metallic fonts and also show
that the movie is being released in the
summer of 2012. Other posters then begin
to show the cast members on them and
there is also one with the main cast
members together.
“The Battle for Earth begins at sea” features
on them all.

The movie battleship has its own website, which also has a twitter feed so that it can relate to
its audience of teens and young adults. It also has a facebook game to get its fans involved
and it also plays the trailer as soon as you log on so that the viewer is reminded of how ‘good’
the film is. It also has links to other sites around the world so that people from different
countries can be involved with the movie.
8. Conclusion
• The marketing package helps to signify a genre
due to the product it appears on. If it appears
on the cover of a horror movie magazine then
the film is likely to be a horror movie. The
time that it is advertised on TV is also a clue to
the genre. If it is advertised late at night then
it is likely to be an adult movie and the show it
is advertised between will help show its genre.
