Rigging
Another area of animation you specialize in is
the rigging. Rigging is creating all of the
joints and skeletons that control how
something moves.
10. Creating this short animation took me nearly 30 hours doing all
aspects of the animation myself. It took my computer 25 hours to
do the final rendering. This is why it is so important to work as team
with each person in charge of one thing.

21. James Butchart started his career working semi-professionally as
photographer while attending the Art Institute of Seattle. It was
encouraged by the college so in his 7th and 8th quarter of school he began
doing Senior pictures and Models Test Shots. He graduated from the Art
Institute of Seattle in 1993 with a degree in Commercial Photography and
moved to Los Angeles, California. In L.A. he began shooting tons of
publicity stuff and head shots for actors. This turned into making
magazine covers for the local magazines. He was shooting pictures of his
rental home for the rental agency and their clients got angry when they
saw how nice his pictures were compared to theirs. So the rental agency
started giving their clients his number and now he specializes in
Architecture and Interiors. These days most of James’s clients are Real
Estate Agents, Contractors, Architects, and Developers. He no longer has
to market himself, all of his business is through referrals. James lived in
Las Vegas for 2 ½ Years and owns a home in Palm Springs, California and
spends most of his time traveling the triangle between the three cities
working for existing customers. When he use to shoot magazines he

Question #1:
Did you got to school to become a photographer?
Question #2:
How did you get started in the industry after graduating?
Question #3:
What kind of clients do you have and how do you
market yourself?
22. For Equipment James has a
complete Nikon Set-Up he
uses for portraits and a
Complete Canon Set-Up he
uses for interiors and
architecture. For software he
uses Adobe CS5 for all of his
HDR and editing. He still
likes the old Microsoft Photo
Image Pro (Obsolete Now)
for retouching head shots.
Most of his friends are also
photographers so he keeps
up on new techniques and
fresh ideas through his
networking of friends. He
also keeps an eye on what
the current style trends are.
According to him the key is
to provide the best lighting
and composition possible to
his clients. Photo: James Butchart, Nicholas Cage’s Home, 2011
Question #4:
What equipment and software do you use?
Question #5:
How do you get new ideas and keep up on modern
Techniques?
23. Doing these photos of Zsa
Zsa Gabor’s house for sale
has led to his favorite
project so far. The listing
agents counter parts in
Paris, France saw the
photos and are now flying
him back and forth to Paris
for photo shoots. This is
James’s favorite part about
his career, that he gets to
see so many beautiful
places. The negative part is
that it is tied so heavily into
the real estate market that
it can be feast or famine.

Question #6:
What is it that you like and dislike about your career choice?
Question #7:
What is your favorite project so far?

24. I would be thrilled to have a career in any one of these three areas. Like James I
love to take picture of beautiful things, its one of the reasons I love the Pacific
Northwest. I truly enjoy editing photos and I like the challenges that repairing an
old damaged photo brings. It looks like when you start off in photography you
need to get whatever work you can and establish a clientele base and get
recognition. Networking with people in the industry and clients is essential and
this is what is my weakest point. I was going to wait until I graduated to seek a
job in the industry since I all ready have a solid steady job, but feel now that I
should really start seeking out a job now before I graduate. The expected growth
rate in any one of my 3 categories is about the same 12%-14% and on average
with the national employment growth rate for all careers. The only real surprise I
found is that the average pay in all 3 categories was much higher than I thought it
would be, by about $15,000.
