"This meeting is a waste of my time." When was the last time you had that thought? Was it because the conversation wasn't focused, or people couldn't agree, or maybe they were in violent agreement, but couldn't see it? How easily do you think you can get this meeting back on track? In this session, you will learn a skill that you can apply on the spot that will help you focus the conversation and drive to consensus. Everything you need is probably already in the room. This technique is specifically for conversations around the features, functions, and behaviors of your product. Most people are visual thinkers, so give them something visual to focus on. You can do that by walking up to the whiteboard and drawing out what people are talking about. By visually capturing the conversation in a public way, you will help all participants understand each other and come to consensus faster. "But I can't draw," you say. Neither can I, and I’ve been successfully using this technique for over 15 years. If you can draw a straight-ish line and a box, you have all the drawing skills necessary. In this engaging workshop, you will learn how to create a basic sketch of an interface using some simple sketching techniques and UX principles as well as practice thinking-on-your-feet that will help you comfortably do this with a group. I have used this technique to help teams focus the conversation, visualize the requirements they were requesting, quickly experiment with new ideas, and provide detailed input that I can use to design the outcome. Often, the sketch (or a photo of it) acts as the deliverable for simple problems, eliminating the need for more formal wireframes. This technique is accessible to everyone. You don’t need any special software and anyone on the team can use it. Pick up the pen and get on track again.

If you can draw a circle, a square, a line and a squiggle, you can avoid traditional specifications, PowerPoints and misunderstandings in meetings. The elevator pitch is invented to quickly explain a business idea or concept. When it comes to transforming the idea into a digital solution it is crucial that all involved quickly is on the same page. You might know Dan Roam’s book ‘On the back of a napkin’. This talk continues in that spirit. Come along and learn how to use the simple art of sketching to save time and money and avoid misunderstandings. It is this year’s most timesaving UX Camp CPH 2013 talk.

Full commentary for this talk can be found at http://byekick.com/442 As user experience designers, our ideas define us. But without the ability to share our thinking, to persuade, we can end up frustrated wondering why a client couldn't see what we saw. UX comes with particular challenges - when we're often working at a conceptual level - so our ability to communicate our ideas is particularly important. Who is it for? Anyone presenting work, whether that be to internal teams (visual design / developers) or clients (internal or external). It's intended to be particularly of use to junior/mid-weight user experience designers. It's not a 'presentation skills' talks, but instead looks specifically at how we communicate UX deliverables in a way that its intended audience can understand, communicate and contribute to.

This talk was presented at RubyConfPH 2015, a conference for Ruby programmers. As coders, we are very familiar with how to communicate using written words. But words exercise only half of our brain. Using sketches to enhance our message leads to more effective communication. It is fun, too! I discuss sketching tips that everyone - even those who think they have no drawing skills - can use right away. These can be applied to blog posts, open-source documentation, bug reports, and even emails.

I am a big fan of Bill Buxton and very happy to spread some of his perspective to the product design team.

We all know the concept of the elevator pitch, where you pitch your idea between two floors in an elevator. Visual + words are even more powerful together and that is the essence of this talk given at CIID Open Lecture. It is all about how you explain your ideas better , how to make sure people remember them and how to gain shared knowledge faster and more efficient. ...And that is by drawing simple pictures to visualise your ideas.

Presented at Sketch Camp Chicago on November 2, 2013. Look inside a designer's toolkit and you'll likely find a broadly defined exercise called sketching. It's an exercise that can turn napkins, flip charts, whiteboards and 6-up templates into valuable assets containing everything from direction of business models to mobile app experiences. While a sketching exercise might produce an artifact seemingly simple to the uninitiated, great designers know the exercise requires design itself. By purposefully designing the exercise around the "3 C's" - communication, context and collaboration - we can increase participation and engagement by both design team members and stakeholders. In this session you'll learn about these three factors that are key to consider in planning and facilitating a sketching exercise. You'll also walk away with a handful of tips and tricks to try on your next project.

Research shows that we think like we speak. The first step in Visual Design Thinking, then, is learning visual language. Come learn Glyph™, a language that balances verbal and visual elements to improve the way you learn, remember, create, and communicate. After this 2.5 hour workshop, you will be bursting through that “I can’t draw” trap and stepping into your new role as a standout visual problem solver. Come join Stanford’s Alli McKee for a workshop that will build your creative confidence and amplify your communication. With extensive experience in both business (Bain & Company + Stanford GSB) and design (IDEO.org + Stanford d.school), Alli has come from Silicon Valley to bring you the best of both worlds to deliver a unique experience that is challenging, fun, and fulfilling. A 25 minute workshop on sketchnoting (visual note taking) which I ran at the UK UXPA Creativity event on 21 March 2013, in London. I ran the workshop 3 times back-to-back and by the end of the evening we had around 50 sketchnotes created by the workshop attendees! Mike Rohde and Peachpit very kindly gave me 3 copies of The Sketchnote Handbook to give away and I picked out 3 budding sketchnoters to receive the books. Thanks to the UK UPA for organising the Creativity event and Sapient Nitro for hosting! And a hat tip to Eva-Lotta Lamm who inspired me to start sketchnoting back in 2011.
