1. Digital Photography Techniques - ISO Settings -
Going digital has many advantages; one of the more unique digital photography techniques is the
ability to adjust the ISO or film speed. Adjusting the film speed changes the light sensitivity of
your camera's sensor. Depending on your camera, there could be an ISO setting range of 50 to
1600. The lower the number, the less sensitive the sensor will be. In a film camera the film
actually needs to be changed to achieve the same effect.
This option is particularly helpful in situations when you
might be shooting in different lighting conditions such
as indoors and outdoors, shade and direct sunlight, etc.
If there is low light, you may even be able to raise the
ISO setting and not need to use your flash. The tradeoff
for taking advantage of this digital photography
technique is that your photos may come out looking
grainy. The higher the ISO setting, the more noise there
may be in the photo. If you are only viewing your
photos in small form this might not be a problem, but if you plan to enlarge the photos, it could
become a concern. Granular appearance can sometimes be corrected with photo editing software
and, as digital camera technology advances, this problem will likely get better or even disappear
all together.
As a rule of thumb, try to use the lowest possible ISO for the best quality shots. When taking
photos outside on sunny days you can usually use an ISO of about 100. If it is overcast, in the
shade or nearing evening you'll want to raise the ISO to around 600. You can set the ISO up to
1600 for shots indoors with low light or outside at night. Digital cameras often have automatic or
preset modes that will select the lowest ISO for you if you're unsure. Changing the ISO is one of
the more flexible digital photography techniques that give you more control of the outcome of
your photographs.
