The Basics
1. Mentions: “@”
Used before a username to direct a
tweet at that person or brand.
2. Hashtags: “#”
Used to “tag” a tweet for a popular

 event or buzz-word.
3. ReTweet
Hover over any tweet on Twitter.com,

and you will see this symbol. Click on it

to “retweet” (or “RT”) another tweet so

that your followers can see it.
Twitter was (and still is) a service
that relied heavily on mobile-
messaging. The worldwide
standard length of SMS (or text
messages on phones) is 160-
characters. The founders
(including @Jack from St. Louis)
thought it wise to stay within that
bounds. Social media and text
messaging have now made
communicating with simplicity an
everyday reality.
In a nutshell, the short-form communication style that Twitter limits its users to actually
encourages people on Twitter to communicate with one another much the same way they do at
a networking event: Make small talk, find the things that connect you quickly, and share your
business insights and news. If you’re limited in space to communicate your message, you’re
likely to keep it simple and skip to the best parts about everything. Twitter is like a timeline
featuring only the highlights about events, people, news, opinions and experiences. On Twitter,
if you just spend a little bit more time in the habitat, you’ll find you might adapt pretty quickly!

Why Social Media Now?
"The world has changed, and consumers,
employees, and stakeholders now expect to
engage with companies and their brands
through social media." - Matteo Tonello of The
Conference Board.
The Value of Conversations
“Marketing is undergoing a remarkable
evolution at this moment. The multitude of
media we can use to speak to our
marketplace is revolutionizing how we work,”
says Brian Carroll of B2B Lead Roundtable.
“Today, for marketing to effectively drive
revenue, it must be a continuous, meaningful
conversation. The most successful marketers
will know how to lead that conversation so
they can communicate to their customer the
right things in the right way at the right time.”
Social Media for Sales
1. Find out who you should contact in order to
secure customer meetings; use LinkedIn to
ensure you are contacting the right person
but make first contact via email.
2. Find out more about people you will meet
prior to customer meetings: where they
have worked in the past and who they
might know in common.
3. Research your competition: monitor a
prospective customer’s connections to find
out which competitors and salespeople are
working on the account.
4. Join groups to keep in touch with
colleagues you have worked with in the
past, follow companies of interest, and
improve your industry related knowledge.
5. Keep existing customers informed about
your company; share links to press
releases, white papers, reports, product
announcements, and company videos.
5 Best Practices
1. Get (and Stay) Organized: Follow experts
and news sources, organize them into lists,
and use search to read about current
events.
2. Give it Time: Log on frequently for
immediate and highly curated industry
news & perspectives, and to learn how
other experts engage.
3. Know Your Own Employees: Seek out your
socially savvy employees; Give them expert
training, and encourage positive social
content sharing.
4. Free Market Research: Monitor brand
mentions, competitors, and industry
keywords and trends.
5. Protect Yourself and Your Brand: Develop a
social media policy internally that keeps
social activity legal, compliant, respectful
and professional.
Women are excellent
communicators and
networkers. Social media is
yet another tool that can
facilitate quick and easy
connections.
