A National Union Catalogue for the Future? Challenges, Opportunities, Pathways
1. A National Union Catalogue
for the Future?
Challenges, Opportunities, Pathways…

2. Currently, the primary academic use case for Copac is to
identify specific physical texts. This is rapidly changing. The
‘right’ text is not necessarily a specific text, but the one that is
readily available online at point of need.
3. Is there a future business case for Copac?
(or a ‘national union catalogue’?)
5. Disappearing as an individually identifiable component of the
library service… the classic catalogue itself is receding from
view… [Lorcan Dempsey, 2011]
6. Function of the catalogue is “rebundled” in changing network
environments [Lorcan Dempsey, 2011]
9. Another question of scale.
What if this represented a national aggregation of activity
data?

“SCONUL proposes the creation of a national
digital library, based on a shared service
model, to provide access to core collections of
materials for all higher education providers in a
much more cost effective way by avoiding
A problem (and solution) shared?
unecessary duplication of effort, and levelling
the playing field for negotiations with

Radical changes in information seeking behaviourGoogleCurrent copac usage and use caseRsearched non users, postgraduates in humanities & arts disciplines. Striking story emerging.Currently, primary academic use case for Copac is to identify specific texts. This is rapidly changing. Should I use the term ‘national union catalogue’? What is a catalogue? Is there a discernible future for either?Just the fact that I was asking myself these questions highlights how strategically complex these times are. Strategising for Copac, and influencing key stakeholders and funders over what it might become, has to be undertaken in this context.A key challenge in developing a coherent identity for Copac is the question of whether Copac is ‘simply’ a resource discovery service, or an infrastructure to support resource discovery along with a range of business requirements. Copac must actively pursue how it can support other services, whether through service development or release of its metadata in an open and reusable format.

PremiseThe function of the catalogue has not disappeared, but uncoupled from the catalogue itself – “rebundled” in changing network environmentsAttention is shifting to the full collection – across an institution and at webscaleCatalogue as one node among many – in the network – a web of data (Linked Data; LOCAH; LOC)

this represented a national aggregation of data gathered from the usage activity of these researchers, JohnRylands/University of Manchester
What else do we need to do at scale?Cloud and shared services initiatives(Cloud image. A Problem Shared?’)What role does Copac have to play in this story?I’ve touched on the role we’re playing the web of data and linked data world, as well as activity dataQuote from SCONUL about shared servicesRLUK shared cataloguing Copac’s already being used for cataloguing purposes
My colleague from the University of Leeds is now going to tell you more about how Copac data is being used to an infrastructure to support decision-making processes around print collections
