A National Union Catalogue
         for the Future?
Challenges, Opportunities, Pathways…

Currently, the primary academic use case for Copac is to
identify specific physical texts. This is rapidly changing. The
‘right’ text is not necessarily a specific text, but the one that is
readily available online at point of need.
Is there a future business case for Copac?
     (or a ‘national union catalogue’?)

Disappearing as an individually identifiable component of the
library service… the classic catalogue itself is receding from

What is a catalogue?Is there a discernible future for either?Just the fact that I was asking myself these questions highlights how strategically complex these times are. Strategising for Copac, and influencing key stakeholders and funders over what it might become, has to be undertaken in this context.A key challenge in developing a coherent identity for Copac is the question of whether Copac is ‘simply’ a resource discovery service, or an infrastructure to support resource discovery along with a range of business requirements. Copac must actively pursue how it can support other services, whether through service development or release of its metadata in an open and reusable format.
