4. ANCILLARY ANALYSIS
Analyse two products for the second ancillary task.
You need to focus on the effect of
fonts, layout, colour, image, mise-en-scene, language, and
identify conventions.
Annotate the products you are analysing. Try to present your
research in different formats.

Music Video – digipak; magazine advert for digipak.
Film Trailer – poster; film magazine cover.
Local Newspaper – billboard poster; two website pages.

6. RESEARCH INTO
INSTITUTIONS
You will need to find out about the type of media institutions
which produce products like yours.
Look back at the products you have analysed and find out
which companies produced them.
Research these companies finding out about examples of
similar products they have produced, and the ownership
structure.

7. AUDIENCE RESEARCH
You need to find out about who your target audience are, what their
expectations are, and how you can appeal to them.
As well as a questionnaire you need to complete a range of audience
research activities. These could include:
• focus group
• interviews
• message boards (create your own and posting questions on
relevant message boards)
• use of internet/social networking sites
• use of your blog
You will need to summarise your findings from your research and
explain how this will help you.

8. EFFECTIVE
RESEARCH
Remember you need to be clear on the purpose of your
research, and this needs to be evident in the work you do.
You need to find out how to create a conventional product
that will appeal successfully to a specific target audience.
You also need to present your work in a variety of formats.
These can include mind-maps, mood
boards, presentations, video, and audio.

9. HOMEWORK
Analyse how a package of products for your brief link
together. Consider how brand identity is created across the
