PowerEdge VRTX shared storage FAQ
How do you manage and provision your shared storage in PowerEdge VRTX ?
All of the management for the shared storage is done in the Chassis Management
Controller (CMC). OMSS will see the storage adaptor but can not manage it.
How are events in Shared Storage reported?
They are NOT visible to the OS on a server but come from the CMC.
How do I update my Shared Storage?
You must use CMC to update it.
How can I configure my Shared Storage?
You can use the CMC GUI, racadm, or WSMAN interfaces.
Can Virtual Disks be assigned to multiple blades?
YES, but they need to be part of Windows Failover Cluster or formatted as VMware’s
VMFS.
If I don’t add the server to the cluster – What can happen? (shared storage)
You can cause data-corruption by over-writing your data because it is not aware that two
or more system are writing to the same Virtual Disk.
Can CMC manage my storage local to the server node?
No, You will need iDRAC7 / LC or OMSA / OMSS to do it.

GPU Support
• GPUs on VRTX support VDI/Flex (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure)
architectures. GPU cards in VRTX must be actively cooled.

• The GPU power cables on VRTX are the standard 2x3 which can
provide an additional 75W per cable. The Riser will support the
following maximum scenarios:
• Up to three single-wide GPGPU cards at 150W
• One double-wide GPGPU card at 225W + one single-wide

PowerEdge VRTX I/O FAQ
How do you make a PCIe slot available to a server node in PowerEdge VRTX ?
The assignments are made via the Chassis Management Controller (CMC)

How do I manage adapters in the PCIe slots?
Once mapped to a server via the CMC management of the adapter is done from that
server’s iDRAC7 or OpenManage Server Administrator

Are there best practices to maximize the performance of PCIe adapters?
A whitepaper will be available at launch

Description

Redundant CMC

Second chassis management controller (CMC) for improved availability

Blade update

Enables updates to components on a blade/disables the ability

Remote syslog
Active Directory and LDAP
PK Authentication
Single Sign-on

Ability for the CMC to log messages to a remote syslog service.
Active Directory and LDAP for login authentication
PK Authentication for SSH
Single Sign-On for LDAP. Requires Active Directory/LDAP feature to be enabled.
This is the Integrated Windows Authentication feature using OS logon credentials
and not the simple token based local single sign on.
Two-Factor Authentication with smartcards. Requires Active Directory/LDAP
Remote File Share (RFS) option maps a file from a NFS/CIFS share on the network
to one or more blades through the iDRAC to deploy or update an operating system.
When connected, the remote file is accessible as if it is on the local system. When
using the CMC interface, the CMC passes the NFS/CIFS credentials to iDRAC to
initiate RFS.
Enables server node BIOS configuration capture & 1-to-many config. replication
Enclosure level power capping.
Enables/disables the ability to manage multiple chassis from a single CMC. This
needs to be licensed on both the master and the member devices.

assignment (VRTX specific)
Geo Mapping in OM Essentials

Enables/disables the ability to perform backup of CMC settings. Restore is
available by default
Flex Addresses can be used. Requires the installation of an SD card which
contains the flex addresses
Ability to put power supply into a "hot spare" mode for greater power efficiency
Enables/disables the ability to assign PCI slots and virtual functions(shared
storage) to a specific blade. When disabled, the CMC will have a fixed assignment
of PCI slots to blades.
After inputting location information for the VRTX units this feature enable
Essentials to dynamically place the systems on a map along with their status

  • 37. PowerEdge VRTX shared storage FAQ How do you manage and provision your shared storage in PowerEdge VRTX ? All of the management for the shared storage is done in the Chassis Management Controller (CMC). YES, but they need to be part of Windows Failover Cluster or formatted as VMware’s VMFS. If I don’t add the server to the cluster – What can happen? (shared storage) You can cause data-corruption by over-writing your data because it is not aware that two or more system are writing to the same Virtual Disk. Can CMC manage my storage local to the server node? No, You will need iDRAC7 / LC or OMSA / OMSS to do it.

  2. “Office environments” range across a full spectrum from single, stand-alone offices to multiple distributed offices of large enterprises and public organizations (these latter are oftentimes called Remote Offices / Branch Offices, or ROBO). Single offices are establishments like a flower shop, an art gallery, a clothing boutique; a doctor or dentist office; a small legal firm; a school in an independent school district, the office of independent contractors in the construction industry; the office of an independent agent in the insurance industry. Examples of distributed offices of large private/public entities include clinics and hospitals of regional medical centers; warehouses and logistics offices of shipping and distribution companies; outlets of a national retail chain; hotels and restaurants of regional and national enterprises in the Hospitality industry; the various departments and buildings on a university campus. Many of the IT pain points experienced in office environments are the same as those of data centers, e.g. having sufficient performance to process jobs or transactions quickly; having sufficient capacity to grow over time with minimal disruption; ensuring that systems, applications and data are highly available; trying to monitor and manage systems to ensure smooth and reliable operation but having to wrestle with multiple tools and console to do so.
  3. Space constrained? Eradicate hardware sprawl and free-up rack space by bringing up to four servers, shared storage and networking into a single, tower-sized platform. Rapid and secure access to records? VRTX’s internal storage helps to deliver better client service with faster performance than a SAN. RAID options for VRTX protect data availability and accessibility. Dell network tools and software options can ensure security of data at rest or in flight. Does it Scale? VRTX offers configuration flexibility and can be tailored to workload and application needs: Up to four server nodes providing 8 CPUs / 64 cores and up to 1.5TB memory; internal storage capacity up to 48TB of raw data; flexible I/O options; options for redundancy and high availability; RAID protection for critical data. Enhance the productivity of IT support staff? iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller enables 1:Many automated updates of server BIOS/firmware, wherever those servers are distributed on the network, saving significant amounts of time and allowing staff to be more productive. Simplified management tools? CMC for VRTX unifies monitoring of servers, storage and networking into a consolidated, intuitive tool, simplifying remote management and reducing potential for error and downtime.Implement virtualization confidently? VRTX configurations are pre-tested and certified to ensure compatibility among all internal hardware resources, OS’s and key hypervisors – VMware ESXi and Microsoft HyperV. Various market studies indicate that about 46% of offices have implemented server virtualization and another 23% are considering doing so. With a combined 69% of office users wanting platforms that are outstanding for virtualization, that design goal certainly went into the planning and engineering of VRTX. Noise Reduction? VRTX is optimized for quiet operation and fits unobtrusively into your office environment. Customer conversations motivated Dell to engineer an unprecedented new platform, designed specifically to address and resolve IT concerns in office environments. Other pain points are similar to those in data centers but are made more poignant due to the lack of on-site IT skills in office environments: Monitoring and managing IT resources to ensure system health and smooth operation requires technical skills and time that most small business owners and office workers simply don’t have. They consequently rely on a service provider to perform these functions. Even though the service provider might be “just a phone call away”, the response time and fix time can result in downtime, lost sales and revenue, and lost customers. Systems management solutions that help service providers to more quickly identify and resolve problems helps to keep these offices open for business. Tools and solutions that further help service providers to perform these tasks remotely, which removes downtime due to travel time, are even better. Many ROBO offices already have already implemented remote systems management. Solutions that cut down on the number of tools and consoles needed to manage remote systems can greatly simplify systems management from the central site. Remote management tools that integrate with current solutions and are consistent with tools used in the data center are even better. Still other pain points are different from those of data centers and are specific to office environments: Data centers typically use high-line power (220-240v) while offices have low-line 110v in the walls. Distributing data center hardware to office environments can require costly re-wiring of the office for high-line power. Clearly, IT solutions that can run on the existing 110v power in offices can make costly re-wiring unnecessary. Offices are full of people, trying to work. If IT systems are too loud, this can be disruptive in the office, lower productivity and have a negative impact on customer service. Systems that are designed for “quiet office” levels of acoustical output can help to avoid these negative impacts. Offices don’t have a lot of space, either on the main floor or in back rooms or “IT closets”. Consequently, hardware platforms that are right-sized for offices, that can conveniently sit beside a desk or under a countertop can go a long way to eradicating hardware sprawl and reducing cabling spaghetti. This not only frees up space, it can improve the appearance of your office and remove potential for downtime due to someone tripping on a cord.

Blade I/O modules (IOM’s) also do this for blades, but this would be too expensive for supporting just 4 server nodes. IOM’s need to have their cost spread over more servers in order to bring down the cost per port. IOM’s are not cost-effective where only a few ports are shared, as with VRTX. Thus, integrating networking and I/O is optimum for VRTX, while IOM’s are optimum for blade infrastructure. 15. Short version:OpenManage tools and technologies are designed to work with VRTX in all aspects of systems management: from the individual elements: server nodes, shared storage and networking components to managing the configuration of the VRTX platform itself as well as integrations and connections with third-party management consoles. The VRTX platform's management options fit your needs. For managing a single VRTX platform, Dell includes the Chassis Management Controller with each system.  A VRTX platform contains one or two Chassis Management Controllers (CMCs – a second backup unit is optional), which are accessible via a web-based GUI. This GUI provides a single point of control for management of the platform and individual elements within the system and can monitor eight other VRTX systems in multiple locations. With its easy-to-use interface and graphical system overview, it is a snap to see which components may need attention. It's important to note that CMC provides a direct link to the iDRAC7 with Lifecycle Controller on each individual server node within VRTX, and that the same tools used to manage PowerEdge rack and blade servers can be used with these server nodes. Longer Version (subject to edits):OpenManage tools and technologies are designed to work with VRTX in all aspects of systems management: from individual components, to the VRTX platform (chassis) and on up to various IT assets within your enterprise. For managing an individual server node, for example, iDRAC7 with Lifecycle Controller offers:Agent-free, embedded management, which means that once an administrator is connected via one of our OpenManage tools such as Chassis Management Controller, the iDRAC7 console or with OpenManage Essentials, any PowerEdge server can be monitored, managed, and configuredIndependence from software agent-based monitoring with all of its inherent complexities that arise from having to install and manage software-based agents.Enables quick deployment and simplified setupChange management made easy with iDRAC with Lifecycle ControllerTo manage the VRTX chassis and all the components within, each VRTX systems contains one or two Chassis Management Controllers (CMCs), which provide a web console givingUnified management tool for all elements of VRTX: Servers, Storage & NetworkingReduced complexity of cross-domain (server, storage and networking) tasks decreases time needed to learn or perform a given taskOffers extensive functionality for each componentHas a simple, intuitive interface making CMC for VRTX easy to use Monitors up to 8 additional VRTX platforms in addition to the one connected VRTX from that same single, consolidated consoleup to 36 servers means less unplanned down time, quicker updates, staged updates, etc.Choice of advanced-level Enterprise or entry-level Express managementOptional redundant management controller option in VRTX platformThen, to monitor Dell servers, storage and networking assets in your networked IT environment, Dell OpenManage Essentials (OME) is available as a no-charge software download from support.dell.com Key attributes are:Agent-free server management operations leveraging iDRAC with Lifecycle controller Automated remote discovery, inventory, monitoring and updates of distributed PowerEdge systems anywhere on your networkEasy installation and use, simplified workflow, and chassis to VRTX node correlation for rapid identification of managed assets Exclusive VRTX feature with OME: “GeoView” ; provides a map view of all deployed VRTX platforms with advanced-level Enterprise management Performance of 1:Many updates of server BIOS, firmware and drivers to multiple VRTX platforms. 19. OpenManage Essentials supports standard systems management protocols such as IPMI, SNMP, WMI and WSMan APIs. In addition, OME works well with Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA).WS-Man protocol recommended for discovery of VMware ESXi. OMSA is required for SNMP discovery.OMSA recommended for WMI discovery. OME will discovery and classify servers via WMI with no OMSA, but inventory information is limited.
  20. Boot from PXE or virtual media ISO (environment/policy dependent) customer needs to be aware of the constraint of the WAN throughput before attempting this operation - most likely will be done in a Datacenter and then sent to the ROBO location.
  21. Current environment: Multiple server chassis’, storage enclosure(s), network switches, management tools and consoles, power cables, and network cables result in sprawl, complexity, inefficiency, hassle and cost, and IT rigidity.
