3. What does a sound designer
do?
• Design install and operate the sound.
• Work extremely close with the director and choreographer as
the sound designer is also a creative role.
• Auditory creator, some sound designers even compose.
• Evoke emotion create and reflect the mood, and underscore
the action.
• Source music and sound.
• Edit the music to correct timing and pitch/tone.
• Decide whether the sound is diegetic or non diegetic.
• - Diegetic: Actual sound that can be heard by the actor. Eg.
Rain.
• -Non Diegetic: Sound only heard by the audience. Eg.
Dramatic music.

• Control radio microphones, ambient microphones and
orchestra microphones.
• -Work out location, how many are needed and where are they
needed backstage.
• Take the script and analyse what's required and when to
create cues in the script.
• It is also required that a sound designer researches accurately
so for example modern music is not featured in a medieval
piece.
