Incredible opportunity to integrate exciting new tools into the classroom that will increase student engagement and motivationCan allow you to create a digital workflow for you and your studentsCan allow you to create an environment of shared learning and collaboration; known as a flatclassroomCan create a classroom without walls
Use social media or web 2.0 to share classroom resources
Post class-related discussion questions with your studentsUse social media & web 2.0 to have discussions with colleagues
Create a digital classroom and encourage students to use itBlog, website, twitter, Edmodo, Google doc, QR code, apps, etc.
Use Interactive TechnologyEducation Apps allow you and your students to collaborate with each other, as well as with industry experts and professionals.Tools like Skype and LinkedIn can be used to collaborate and share globallyAnd tools like Google Drive and dropbox allow you and your students to stay connected with cloud based applications which give them access to their school work anytime, anywhere. Evernote is great to help you and your students create organized notebooks. It’s a great way to build the use of a smartphone into the classroom. Animoto, Prezi, Wordpress, and many other web 2.0 tools have apps that students can use on their mobile devices.
A tool like Edmodo allows you control over what students post
Use social media and web 2.0 as teaching tools
You don’t have to master the tool; experiment and play with it, try it out.Ask your students! Give students ownership Create an environment where learning is sharedTechnology is changing quickly; don’t invest too much time into the “hottest” new thing, because something new will replace it.
If you choose to integrate social media and web 2.0 tools its important to consider who your audience is going to be. Your audience will depend on the tool you use. Some tools can serve to meet the needs of multiple audiences: Edmoodo-students and parents & colleagues; PRIVATE, SECURE NETWORKClass blog or website- students, parents, highlight achievements, send reminders, Professional blog – colleagues, find like-minded individuals with whom you can collaborate Twitter – colleagues, students, parents; global; for me I use Twitter strictly for professional reasons but I don’t have a separate classroom and education account. I have created sepeartehashtags for my students so they can easily follow a topic. Right now they can use #PAMKTYOUNGBIZ to gain access to any of the resources related to business planning that I have found. Benefits? You will model appropriate digital citizenship for your students. My Twitter is public for a reason. My students see how I use Twitter appropriately and professionally and they do the same.
Thousands of educators and organizations worldwide that are sharing resources and offering support in the use of technologyVast majority are free! Personalized, differentiated professional development.
Set up a professional learning network FREESAVES YOU TIME ONCE YOU SET UP THE NETWORK CORRECTLY
BEST WAY TO START YOUR NETWORK IS TO GET ONTO TWITTER AND START LEARNING FROM OTHERSAll of these tweeters have blogs and websites with vast amount of information on technology integration
Earn professional development from these education organziationsThese organization are active on Twitter, they blog, and they have resources posted on facebookLinkedIn Education GroupsFacebook Education Pages you can Like EdchatEdweb.net
Clearly communicate with your students when you will be available to interact with them via the social media tools that you are using. For me, I always have my phone so my students know that if they send me a message, the likelihood that I will respond is high. It makes me happy to know that my students are thinking and working on their projects or homework outside of class. Also, with Edmodo, I am able to see who is logging in, what they are viewing, and how they are feeling about different assignments based on the insights feature that is provided.
Role model appropriate on-line communication through your own blog, twitter account, website, ect.
Don’tShare personal information through social media that you wouldn’t share in class
Don’t set your privacy setting to public and allow everyone to view everything. Keep the groups closed.
Don’t discuss anything that is inappropriate or non-education related
Don’t Bad mouth your students, their parents, your colleagues, the administration, the school, etc.
Don’t have an unprofessional profile picture
Don’t play non-education related games
Don’t chat with students during non-office hours ; make your availability to your students clear from day 1 so they know when you will respond to any digital communication with them.
This has nothing to do with school and isn’t necessary to post on any of the digital classroom resources you have.
Don’t try to do too much; learn a few tools at a time
Don’t forget technology is just another tool Technology may not always be the best way to achieve the objective of your lesson. The best test is to ask, what do I want my students to be able to do? Always start with the goals and objectives of the curriculum first. Use it as a way to increase student motivation and choice, but don’t make it the focus. You aren’t teaching technology, you are teaching skills. Can technology be used as a way to more effectively teach those skills?
The focus must be on student learning, not the technology, however there are ways technology can lend themselves to teaching 21st century skills. How will the integration of technology improve student learning? Will the use of technology allow the learning goal to be achieved more effectively? Will the use of technology all me to more effectively differentiate? Is using a piece of technology the best way for students to achieve the learning goals?
