This document outlines a social network challenge created by the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library to engage staff through online learning modules. The challenge utilizes a Moodle learning management system to host quizzes on various library topics, track participant scores on a leaderboard, and provide incentives to maintain interest. - My presentation Moodling @ the Library with the HMCPL Social Network Challenge will show how Moodle was used during out Social Network Challenge.
- After creating a free Moodle account, users are able to create a classroom website by choosing one of the several themes offered at Moodle.org. view a demonstration website showing how theme would look, and customize the page layout. For the Social Network Challenge, I decided to go with a theme called Simplicity and for page layout, have all the courses on the left on the screen, a calendar on the right of the screen and a log in area for staff located in the top right portion of the webpage.
- The Social Network Challenge began on January 3 rd and ended on February 15 th which was the HMCPL’s annual Staff Development Day. There were a total of six challenges consisting of websites where the Library had an online presence such as Flickr and Facebook as well as resources offered at our Library such as The Digital Media Zone & Worldcat. Challenges were unveiled each Monday and staff had the option of either completing the challenges one at a time or completing several challenges in one sitting.
- I created a scoreboard by using Microsoft Word to create a table and then pasting the html code into the Moodle assignment page. The scoreboard was updated each Friday and teams were formed by using a free online random group generator as well as a list with the names of all HMCPL employees. Since a random group generator was used, this ensured that all teams would consist of employees from each of the library’s 12 branches.
- If you are considering doing this type of project, it is extremely important to determine what type of incentives you will offer library staff for completing all of the challenges. For the Social Network Challenge, we offered a 4GB Flash Drive for individuals who completed all 6 challenges and the team who completed all the challenges received a trophy filled with chocolates as well as have their team picture place on Staffspace.
- When creating questions using Moodle, there are seven question types-true/false, short answer, multiple choice, matching, numerical, essay, and description. Although description is listed as a question type, it is better defined as a label and not as a question. A description question type allows course creators to write a description of something without it requiring a answer.
- If you are wanting to making hyperlinks in Moodle, it’s easy to create linkages to both internal and external websites by inserting the website address into the course page. In the example shown here, if you clicked “Huntsville-Madison Public Library databases,” it would take you to a HMCPL database list website which is outside on the Moodle classroom however if you clicked “Digital Media Zone Quiz,” it would take you to an internal Moodle classroom page where the Digital Media Zone Quiz is located.
- If you are creating a course and are using terms that your user may not know, Moodle provides creators the option to create a glossary. When using the glossary, you’d manually type in the terms and definitions for you want user to know. Be aware the anywhere the glossary term appears, this will create a link from the course page to the glossary.
