This activity is designed to help you develop a lesson that teaches character through the curriculum and encourages ethical reflection. Part of your project may be in the form of a webpage, videography (no longer than 10 minutes), poster, brochure, song, poem, or any other instructor-approved medium to teach character education. Select one of the following content areas you already teach (CCSS or state standards): >> I teach Math_ Algebra 2 & Geometry<< Math Language Arts Social Studies Science Art Physical Sciences Physical Education Sports Music Modern Language Using your selected content area, design a lesson plan presentation for Character Education through the Curriculum. This lesson is designed for use in your classroom to help students develop the cognitive side of character (performance, civic, and/or moral) by (include all the following): Raising ethical awareness Creating an understanding of virtues of your chosen character type (vocabulary) and how to apply them in concrete situations What materials are you planning to use to support the concept Plan for reflection opportunities Helping students to take the perspective of others Helping students to reason morally (Why are some things right and others wrong?) Helping students make thoughtful decisions (the virtue of prudence) Helping students create self-knowledge, including the capacity for self-criticism (the virtue of humility) Formative assessment – How will you informally measure the students’ understanding of the lesson? What activity will they do to demonstrate their learning? You are still learning and will continually develop. To finalize your project, look to the future: What’s next? Now that you know more about character, what skills might remain to still be refined or added? What might you want to explore further in the arena of moral leadership? Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research. Cite and reference your sources in APA style. Peer Responses (Due Thursday) Read your classmates’ responses. Reflect and substantively comment on at least three of your peers’ submissions. Share your overall impressions of the lesson/project. What areas are done well and why? RESEARCH PROPOSAL ASSIGNMENT DUE: 12/03/2018 5PM SUBMIT ON BLACKBOARD For this assignment, you will draw on your lessons from the topic development and data collection you did in the course to write a 10-13 page (double-spaced) proposal outlining details that you propose for a 4-month study. In this proposal, you will be expected to include the following: I. Introduction and research question: Offer a brief context for your topic. This can include some interesting current event that is connected to your topic, relevant brief historical details, and/or the setting up of the broader theoretical, political or social issues or conversation your question is attempting to address. This introduction should then clearly lead into your research question. In other words, your articulation of your research question should naturally flow from the introductory context you set up. State the research question clearly. You must include citations for any claims you make! II. Rationale/Significance: Explain to us the significance of your project. Some ways you can think about this question; you don’t have to answer all of these: a. Why is your study original? b. Why is it important to ask this question you are posing? What would it help us understand better? c. Why is doing it qualitatively a valuable contribution? d. Are the participants or site something other scholars haven’t considered but should? Why? III. Literature Review: Provide a brief overview of the bodies of literature that will be informing your project. This is an outline of your literature review so remember, this should only be references to secondary and scholarly sources (e.g.—NOT newspapers). Cite some examples (5-7) of the scholarship you would use. Answer the following: a. Which areas of scholarship (disciplines, sub-disciplines, schools of thought, areas of study, etc.) will you be drawing from? b. Why are you drawing from these? How does it help inform your work? c. What are the broader discussions, debates, conversations, etc. that these bodies of literature are having about your topic? d. What will be your study’s contribution to this discussion? In other words, what do you think is missing in their scholarly conversation? What haven’t they tackled (or adequately tackled) yet? IV. Methods: In this section, provide full details about your methodological approach to this study [JUSTIFY EVERYTHING].Answer the following: a. What will be the fieldsite for your study? A center? A government agency? A building? Some meeting? Explain briefly why this would be appropriate for your study. b. Who will be the participants in your study? Whom will you observe? Whom will you interview? Provide number of individuals, positions, etc. Explain why you are making these decisions. c. Which methods will you be using? Why? Provide details. How many hours/days will you spend doing participant-observation? How many semi-structured interviews? If relevant, what kind of material culture data do.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS All assignments should be completed using APA style. Use the Calibri or Arial font (not Times New Roman). Assignment #1: Reflection papers (20%) The purpose of learning theory about human behavior in the social environment is to strengthen our understanding of why people behave as they (we) do across development and in changing environmental contexts. This process is enhanced by consistent application of theory to particular behavior. To facilitate that process in this course, you will write 3 reflection papers in which you: Reflect on a specific prompt I will provide on Blackboard (See assignments). They may include: Reflection and discussion of peer reviewed article assigned; Observation of behavior in someone in which you are paying attention to and writing on developmental themes and issues; Reflection on yours or another family member’s/friend’s experiences in a particular stage of development, in which you pay attention to developmental themes and issues. Engage with the readings, either through direct discussion of ideas (a), or by applying relevant theory, concepts, or research from the readings to interpret the behavior or interaction (b or c). What concepts are exemplified? How do these concepts contribute to your understanding of “what’s going on” and “why”? Your paper must have substantive content. Use graduate level writing skills. Your entries should be 1.5 pages in length, double spaced, with a simple header and no title page or abstract. Do cite properly using APA style. When you discuss a theory from the text, please use the theorist’s name, for instance, “According to Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development”, and then cite the text. You should cite other articles as you use them. Assessment criteria (no rubric): Depth of insight Appropriateness of application of readings to reflection Graduate level grammar Capacity to express relevant ideas succinctly 5 Each reflection paper will have a specific prompt. See Blackboard Assignments for the prompts. Each paper will be graded on a scale of 100 points and all together are worth 20% of the final grade. Reflection papers are due by 11:59 pm on Blackboard on the dates given in Module Schedule. Assignment #2: Quizzes (2 quizzes | each 10% = 20%) There will be two quizzes in this course on content from the readings and lecture. Each will focus on major theorists, content of theories, and developmental themes and issues. Quizzes are a combination of multiple-choice questions and short answer. Quiz 1 is due 3/27/21 at 11:59 pm. Quiz 2 is due 4/24/21 at 11:59 pm. Assignment #3: Discussion Boards (10%) Several discussion boards will be assigned connected to film you watch or a case study, and a handout or prompts to which to respond. These are typically scheduled for asynchronous weeks. See Module Schedule for due dates.
