Oracle believes that the Scaleable Grid architecture is the architecture of the future. It eliminates the long-standing tradeoff between high-end hardware platforms that are scaleable (up to a point) and available, but also very high cost due to low volume. Sometimes people think that because there is so much compute and storage in a database machine it must consume huge amounts of power. In fact the power consumption is not large. Maximum Power usage of a Full Rack Database Machine is 14KW, typical is 9.8 KW. A single high end SMP platform without storage or switches can consume well over 20 KW.

Transcript: Now one of the things that kind of exemplifies that is this notion of an application grid. If you've been with Oracle for any length of time, you've heard us over the years talk about grid computing. We introduced real application clusters at the database level. We introduced Automated Storage Management for storage. We're now taking those same principles and applying it to the application tier. How can you get a grid of commodity servers running all your different applications in a uniform management environment, getting very high performance, high availability, high scalability through the power of the software infrastructure. Again the same value that we provided for the database for storage, how can we do that at the application level? Now all your application workloads, whether they are your custom applications, your packaged applications, Java, non-Java should all run in this uniform environment. Author’s Original Notes: The products that make up Oracle’s implementation of the Application Grid... Oracle WebLogic Server: #1 Java application server Oracle Coherence: Unique in-memory data grid to deliver extreme performance Oracle JRockit: World’s Fastest Java VM delivers predictable performance Oracle Tuxedo: Mainframe-class quality of service on commodity hardware Enterprise Manager: To manage all the elements of the Application Grid and rapidly provision it to deliver faster time-to-value 10/14/10 12:34 Hasan Rizvi
Transcript: Now the way we do this is of course using some of our key products that you know about. WebLogic Server, again the industry's leading Java application server. JRockit, which is a Java virtual machine that your WebSphere can run on. Again we've done stuff at the JVM level to take advantage of multicore processing, to take advantage of large memories. Run on hypervisors directly so that you can take advantage of virtualization. Do better memory management so that you can get better performance. Again, what we do in the JRockit layer, everybody who runs on top benefits from it directly so you don't have to worry about it at the upper levels. Coherence is a great example again of that application grid paradigm. You always have data that you're accessing from a database and you need very quick access to that data. Coherence data grid allows you to cache large volumes of data. With the latest release we can address up to a terabyte of memory in the middle tier in a trusted environment so that you can have a fault-tolerant cluster of commodity devices. All the failures are taken care of, all the scalability is taken care of. You get memory-level access to your data. And then finally Tuxedo, which is a C/C++ application server, if you will. I'll talk a little bit more about that later. Enterprise Manager, as with all our other products, provides that common management framework across all of the different products. And again, when you have a grid, clearly you need better management tools because instead of having that large SMP, you have now hundreds of different servers. You need to be able to manage them as if it was a single box, and Enterprise Manager allows you to do that. Transcript: As I said, we've been investing in Fusion Middleware for some time now. Every year, every other year we've made some significant enhancements, added new capabilities. We've really expanded the definition of middleware because from our customers we've heard that there's a lot of spend in terms of building this integration, so wouldn't it be better if companies like Oracle would provide a more complete solution. So we've been adding capabilities throughout the last few years. And through that strategy that I talked about plus obviously all the capabilities in our product, we've been very pleased with the customer adoption. We have over 90,000 customers worldwide, obviously some of you here, who've been using Fusion Middleware. Now to that end, I want to just talk about Fusion Middleware 11g. Author’s Original Notes: Oracle Fusion Middleware has grown consistently over the years to more than 90,000 customers… Organic growth as well as acquisitions Relentless improvement and innovation Dominant force in benchmarks and industry ratings 10/14/10 12:34 Hasan Rizvi
