The first thing a designer must do whenever
starting a new design project is to search
for the meaning of it. He might start with
the research on the history to understand
the nature of the project.
Finding the roots of the project will also
allow the designer to define the area of
possible solutions that are appropriate to
the problem.
Following his intuition and diagnostic
ability is useful to filter the information
gathered within the previous research.
The use of semantics will provide the
correct foundation for the project,
regardless of its nature.

The knowledge of context will determine
the look and destination of the project,
whether is a two or three-dimensional
object.
Looking for influences will shape the
designer’s working process in every field.
They affect the mind in a deep and
formative way.
Design should respond to people’s needs,
not to people’s desires.

It’s an innovative and creative method
designed by IDEO and is based on the
practices the team has been involved in.
Used to stimulate creative input within
members of a design group from the
conceptualization to the execution stage
of a project.
The IDEO cards blend ethnographic and
narrative research to target audience
preferences and trends. It might be
possible to see cultural issues that might
impact design.

They are 51 cards and are organized in
4 different areas: learn, luck, ask and try.
The method covers different levels of
design. It can be used from the level of
conceptualization or production.
The approach might be in a branching
manner; it can be by revisiting a
problem’s condition.
Every card contains a discussion of
how and why.
The cards relate to techniques and
methods of brainstorming. It inspires
designers to think outside the box.

Thinking is that it allows you to build
on each others ideas. You get to a
place you can’t get to in one mind”
“Breakthrough ideas happen
everyday at IDEO. The key for
unlocking creativity might be the
unorthodox approach to problem
solving”

Interaction Design projects start from a
situational experience and a scientific
research approach.
Based on observation and assumptions
about a particular situation, experimentation
will conduct behavioral hypothesis to be
tested on users throughout the interaction
with design prototypes.
The use of personas and flowcharts are
useful to understand the user’s behavior
and then build the interfaces that will
respond to those particular needs.
Throughout sessions of trial and error the
interface designs will be finessed until the
design process reaches its completion.
