This is the blog presentation of Julia Fedorova featuring the fall of Kodak. Kodak was once the leader of the photography industry, however since the age of digital photography, they have struggled to survive. This blog talks about how the fall of Kodak has been captured in photographs. Julia Fedorova's interest in photography has been greatly influenced by many photo companies, including Kodak.

THE AGE OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
CAUSES KODAK TO FALL

2. In a recent article published by
The Guardian, Kodak, a
company that once formerly
ruled the photography scene,
is now struggling to survive
after the boom of the digital
revolution.

3. The company’s roots still
remain in Rochester, NY where
writer Dave Stelfox meets a
group who has captured the
fall of Kodak through
photographs.

4. At its peak, Kodak produced
90% of the film used in the
USA and provided jobs to
more than 60,000 local people
of Rochester.

5. After spending many years to
try and compete with the rise
of digital photography, Kodak
had to sell their assets, let go
of workers and eventually in
2012, filed for bankruptcy.

6. This caused much grief to the
photographic world and in
2012, Magnum Agency let 11 of
its members go to Rochester
for 2 weeks to document the
life in the town after end of
Kodak. However, this did not
prove sufficient time to capture
all of the story.

7. 12 months after the teams
visited they went back to take
photos and learn more about
the community that still lived in
Rochester. Through
photographs and interactions
with locals the team was able
to paint a better picture of the
town who had “not lost it’s
pride.”

8. They captured every aspect of
the city and the many “layers”
that made the city what is was.
The group took photos of the
“present day” evoking the past
of what Rochester was and in
addition, photos of the history
of the town as a starting point
of what lies for the future of
Rochester.

9. A portrait was taken of a girl,
Amanda Webster whose
grandfather and father both
worked for Kodak and who is
currently studying photography
at the Rochester Institute of
Technology, a program funded
by Kodak.

10. Through this portrait and others
like it, the group came to realize
the uncertainty of Rochester’s
future.

11. From the rise and fall of Kodak,
it will be interesting to see
what’s in store for the future of
photography and to see if there
will be a company that affects
photography the same way that
Kodak once did.
