Kate HallPark Ridge 6 years doing a variety of teacher programs for all ages.Offered CPDus through LACONI and ILA as well KellyPRPL since December 2010
Kelly: What success have you had in getting teachers into your library? What has worked? What hasn’t?What is the biggest stumbling block to getting teachers into the library?
Kate: So how do you get them in?Teachers are busy just like librarians and as a result, it is very challenging to get teachers in. We need to give them a reason to come in to the library.
Kate:With teens, we tend to offer them food and while that also works, to a certain point with teachers, as yummy as chocolate is, we have to offer something more.
Kelly:Every teacher needs CPDUs. A CPDU is a continuing education credit that teachers need in order to be recertified with the state of Illinois. Just like libraries, teachers are not able to find as many offerings for CE as before and they are always looking for ways to get credits completed for free. There are two types of credits: CPDUs and CEUsA CPDU is typically given in increments of an hour or half hourA CEU is given for a longer course and is comprised of 10 hoursMore libraries will offer CPDU and not CEU classes
Kelly:By offering food and classes your library will achieve…….
Kate: Success! Not only will you be providing a service that all teachers need, you will be increasing your library stats as well. Teachers learn about the library and then they start using the services. We are going to discuss types of programs a little later, but there are other benefits. You get to know the teachers on a more personal basis and not just when you visit classrooms to discuss summer reading or do booktalks. This way, you are able to get to know them and they get to know you. I hate to say it, but it is a win win.
Kelly:Go to the ISBE site and create a login and passwordClick on Apply to be a CEU/CPDU providerChoose the areas you want to offering classes inNOTE: You can always go back and change what you offer Submit for approvalYou will receive an email with information on your provider number. It usually takes a few days to be approved.
Kate:Congrats! You are now a certified CPDU provider. What are your responsibilities? Print the Evaluation Form (keep for 3 years)Have a Sign-In Sheet (keep for 5 years)Print an Evidence of Completion Form (teacher gets)Name on the forms doesn’t have to be person who registered through the siteFor description, I usually just put in what we put in our newsletterSince we also offered classes to day cares, I also created a letter on letterhead stating that they had completed the class and the number of hours. Don’t hand out Evidence of Completion until the end of the class.
Kelly:Now that you are a certified CPDU provider, what classes should you offer? Offer a 3 hour workshop on what’s Hot in CS books for different ages. People can come for 1, 2 or all 3Ages: Picture BooksEasy Readers and Early Chapter Books4-8 gradersWe wanted to offer 4 hours so we could do a specific one on Teen books, but we felt that was too long. Had subs and pop and offered teachers a handout of books with pictures and annotations. Two librarians offered it and we took turns doing the book talks. We also used to do ones based on different subjects: Great Books for Math, Science, Social Studies, Etc.Remind teachers that they can check out books from the public library for their school. Be amenable to helping pull books for them for classes.
