Exploration was inspired from the concept of Project Beeja, brainchild of Ms Meghna Ajit.
Natural resources, Environment friendly materials, Sustainable development and Social Communication were some of the characteristic features of this project.
2. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to thank Ms Meghna Ajit and Mr. Manas Barua for their constant
support and help and for patiently guiding me through the module.
3. Reflective Note
This module started with a lot of field visits to various places like Delhi Haat, India Habitat Centre,
Pilakhuwa, and Sikeda Village to study the sites for their Ambience, Architecture,
Lighting,Interaction Space, hospitality Customer services and Interaction, Unique Selling Point,
Promotional Activities and Crowd. On-site visits helped us get an idea about the location and the
size of the plot. Initially I was pretty clueless on how to go about calculating the plot area but then
slowly I learned how to read a measurement tape and got a hang of the concept of space.
There are three plots for Community Centre. Two plots are for ‘Beeja’ (In Sikeda village where the
whole community would get together and would be taught to make product of Bamboo and Rambas
grown near the village) and ‘Sajavat’ (Plot for the craftsmen – traditional block makers of
Pilakhuwa) and the Third plot is a Retail outlet– cum-design Studio for the all the activities done by
UCMA Design Studio.
I decided to work on the retail outlet. The first thing I did was to get the measurements of that
place, which took me two visits as I couldn’t get the measurements right the first time. Then I tried
out various layouts which were very vague initially but as I got to know the profile of Design Studio
I came across this concept of Modular Display Units. The term ‘Modular’ means something that
standardized units and at the same time allows flexibility and variety. For e.g. Modular Kitchen,
Modular bathrooms etc.
I was also thinking of materials and colours simultaneously as they have to complement each other
in the Display. After finalizing the concepts I visited Bamboo retailers (in Kirti Nagar),Electricql
Shops- Light, fan, Hardware Shops- hinges, Araldite Screws, Flooring-marble and tiles, Glass
retailers to know about the options available.
Soon I was working out the technical Drawings on the computer which was again very challenging
and interesting especially Isometric drawings. I learned how to show light effects and work out the
orthographic and elevation plans. Figuring out the joinery also required me to get into the technical
aspect of the material used. After knowing few options like Industrial Glue – silican or Araldite or
Brass Plates with Screws or simply Brass Rivets with Pins to join glass to glass. I decided to go for
the most economical option.
Calculating the budget gave me a rough idea of how much would my Display would cost me which I
previously wasn’t much aware about. This module was on eye opener to a lot of things and there
are still a lot of things that I have to learn. I enjoyed working on this project.

5. Proposal for the Community Centre
Since time immemorial there has been a place where people would get together
discuss and showcase their talents to the public. People would get together and
organize ‘Panchayats’ and ‘Melas.’ But hasn’t it always been human nature to keep
on improving and innovating the existing environment?
Soon there was the concept of Community Centre. These are permanent
establishments in a community which provide a place for celebrations, sharing
knowledge and displaying arts and crafts of the people to the World.
Today the Retail Culture has created new spaces for people to hang out. But don’t
you think these cultures mostly showcase foreign cultures? And of coarse they are
all marketing oriented.
These Malls don’t offer people much opportunity to display their own identity.
What if there is a space that showcases the traditional Arts and Crafts of the
community of that particular region in a Retail Environment while retaining their
traditional knowledge and sustaining the culture at the same time? It is time for
Fusion of Indian Culture with latest Global Marketing Trends.
Why not take this Retail Marketing concept forward and create an Indianised
version that would reflect, promote and present community’s own cultural Identity
to the world? It would be a retail experience with a difference!

6. Background of the project:
Pilkhuwa is a city and a municipal board in Ghaziabad district in the Indian state of
Uttar Pradesh. It is situated in NCR, around 55 kms from Delhi. It is famous for
Gandhi's Dream Khadi. Pilkhuwa is also well known for small industries for
manufacturing the Canvas, Khadi and Printing work.
This Project aims to support sustainable livelihood through a Community Centre by
utilizing Agave (Rambas) and Bamboo species for land development in Pilkhuwa.
The chief aim is to create awareness in the market for Community’s Crafts and
Culture in an Eco –Friendly environment.
The purpose of the community centre is to establish a self sustained cottage
industry that would support the craftsmen and people of the village through
workshops. The Community Centre would teach innovative craft methods to
generate employment by starting a small eco -friendly Industry based on products
made of Agave and Bamboo. These are self growing resources unlike others which
are slowly depleting from the face of Earth.
An extensive research was done previously as a part of the Project and it shows
that these materials have the capacity to grow easily in this region.
Community Centre will initiate a lifestyle and culture which is in harmony with the
nature. But most importantly it will give the community an opportunity to present
themselves, their cause and ideals and Products to the World. Besides this, I also
plan to have outlets for eating and retailing and a landscape that would be
completely in sync with the nature!
Therefore the community centre would be a multipurpose building which would be
the hub for workshops and meetings and also nurture other activities like -
designing, production, display and marketing of the final products for purchase,
hanging out and relaxing at the same time!
Another long term objective of this project is to replace plastic with natural
materials just like Plastics had once replaced natural materials!
This Community Centre will provide the people a platform to showcase their
identity to the world! There would be two plots for Beeja (bamboo and rambas) and
Sajavat (wood workshops combining bamboo with other material) and one plot
where products of various projects would be displayed and sold. This plot would
also have the UCMA Design Studio.

Light Shops
The Lighting could be classified into four types:
1) Accent lighting: considered as one of ther e‘layers of lighting when lighting a space.
They are used to make something stand out in space, they are auxiliary to the
general lighting Eg. Track lights, spot lights, scones.
2) Task lighting; Directional light aimed at specific task. Eg. Desk lamps, appliance
light, ceiling pendant fixtures.
3) Ambient lighting – general lighting makes up the base amount of lighting in the
room. Recessed lights mounted in the ceilings, table lamps, and floor lamps.
4) Decorative lighting –are pendant, scones, chandeliers, light strips and even candles.
Know costing lights have CFl-compact fluorescent lights. With choke fitted I it.
Lights can be broadly categorized into
CFL
Halogen
Fluorescent lights
Facts:
Halogen lights are sharper and stronger as compared to CFl. That is why CFl is used for
lighting photographs and oil paintings to prevent damage from heat generated by lights.
Compact Fluorescent lights are cool lights.
Cove lights are used to create mood and special effects and are widely used for displays. It
is indirect light, also called hidden light.
Lamp posts are available from 1500 Rs. Range and they use GI pipes which are available
at the hardware shop. Making their height adjustable.
Trim tubes are available in number of shapes and sizes and are used for general lighting
purpose as well as commercial purpose by fitting track lights into it.
Pendant lights are used for decorative purposes as well as general ambient lighting in
corners, kitchen dining table. These days’ pendant lights are used in hotels and restaurants
to keep the food warm.
Up lighter are another source of indirect lights and are mainly used in corners. In home,
offices etc.
Suspended lights-wall brackets are used in offices, corridors, domestic purposes- GLS
(general lighting system.
There are spot lights and rail lights which are used for displays. Rail lights can be placed
in a straight line or in triangular shape and can be rotated in any direction. Then there are
track lights which have system which is more expensive than rail or spots.
There are LED’s which are available in different colours- red, orange, blue, green, yellow.
