How did the conquistadors do it? They had native allies Though many Spanish accounts don’t mention them The allies fought in Spanish conquests inside and outside of Mesoamerica
Allies helped in many ways… Gave gold and resources as gifts to establish peace Provided food for the Spaniards
Allies worked as… Porters, or tamame, and carried bags Spaniards didn’t bring many horses with them Guides to help troops with the terrain Interpreters to communicate with other tribes
Other relationships with allies The exchange of native women for marriage Marriages contributed to alliances between households Many natives were against the Triple Alliance and formed alliances among each other
