If you want to install Git on Linux via a Binary Installer i.e package management tool that comes with your distribution. If you are on Fedora/CentOS use :
$ yum install git-core

Your Identity :First thing you should do when you install git is set your username and e-mail address.
This is important because every Git Commit uses this information.You need to do this only once to Set Everything up.You can set your default text editor such as Vim Emacs Gedit etc (if you want)
