2. CLEMENTINUM
historic complex of buildings, built at the area of 2
hectares
It is currently used as the National Library
in 1556 transformed to a Jesuit college
in 1773, Clementinum was established as an
observatory, library and university
There is the Astronomical Tower which is 68 metres
high
4. NATIONAL THEATRE
neo-Renaissance building dating from 1868-1883
in 1881, fire broke out and destroyed much of the new
building
this event was considered a national catastrophe
money for the reconstruction was collected from all
social classes
today the National Theatre consists of three artistic
ensembles – opera, ballet and drama
6. NATIONAL AVENUE – NÁRODNÍ TŘÍDA
situated at the borders of the Old Town and the New
Town
one of the important avenues in Prague
a brutal intervention against a peaceful demonstration
on November 17, 1989 happened in the National avenue
the demonstration started the Velvet Revolution and the
end of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia
