2. Between April 2012 and October 2014,
Queenslanders had a unique way to
access their Premier.
Campbell Newman was the first
Australian Premier to consistently
answer questions from the public on
Facebook via the “Premier’s Team”.
This engagement ensured Campbell
Newman's Facebook Page audience
grew to be the largest of any Premier
in Australia - without spending a cent
on advertising.
As the sole member of the “Premier’s
Team”, I also had to develop strategies
to minimise risk and deal with online
campaigns, bullying, misinformation,
threats and complaints.

3. It began with one simple idea:
that every Queenslander should
have a say in the future of our
state. The Queensland Plan is
our shared 30-year vision for the
state.
My role on The Queensland Plan
team was to provide advice on
online interaction with
Queenslanders, approve social
media and website content and
promote the plan online.
More than 80,000
Queenslanders shared their
vision for the future thanks to
webinars and website content
promoting the plan.

4. With concerning levels of drug
and alcohol fuelled violence
happening across the state, we
turned to social media to hear the
views of young Queenslanders
and hospitality staff.

5. CANDOQLD: 2012 State Election
As the online and social media advisor for the LNP’s successful 2012 campaign,
I was responsible for:
• 89 candidates
• 78 Facebook pages
• 36 Twitter accounts
• 4 websites
• 100 videos on the CANDOQLD
YouTube channel
• Daily eNewsletters

6. Social Media Training
Since 2011, I have trained Ministers,
MPs, candidates, staff and volunteers
in using social media.
This means everything from one-on-
one sessions to small workshops and
community forums.
In 2014 I spoke at three community
forums about how community groups
can effectively use social media.
Most recently I guest lectured at QUT,
sharing my experiences using social
media in government with a group of
visiting Indian Government officials.
7. On Australia Day 2013, ex-Tropical Cyclone
Oswald caused extensive flooding, wild
weather and tornados throughout the Wide
Bay-Burnett region. Parts of Brisbane,
Ipswich and the Lockyer Valley were also
expected to flood.
During the disaster I used Twitter and
Facebook to provide updates from the
Premier’s briefings, provide advice to
affected residents, source information
about isolated communities, and provide
updates on flooded areas.
When the Government’s websites crashed
due to demand for information about school
closures, my suggestion to use Facebook
to spread the information was implemented.

8. The announcement of tougher
anti-hooning laws attracted
thousands of car enthusiasts to
the Campbell Newman’s
Facebook Page seeking
explanations and assurances.
When Downshift posted an open
letter about police enforcement at
an event for car enthusiasts, the
complaint quickly spread with the
post attracting 2500 likes, 300
comments and 80 shares in the
first two hours.

9. Case Study: Downshift Aus
As the Premier’s Team, I
quickly arranged a response
from the Premier and then
identified key stakeholders
and common concerns
expressed on social media.
Working with the Queensland
Police Service, meetings were
arranged with key
stakeholders and an education
campaign developed to
address common concerns. Education Campaign:
• Q&A sessions on Facebook
• Youtube videos
• Handouts for distribution
• Meetings with key stakeholders
• Public forum at Eatons Hill
10. Case Study: Downshift Aus
A memorial cruise for actor Paul Walker was the first test of the improved relations
between the Newman Government and car enthusiasts. Unlike interstate events,
the Queensland cruise went ahead without any problems or arrests.
