The holiday shopping season is always a busy (and profitable) time for malls and retail shops. Beginning with Black Friday and onwards until 11:59 PM on Christmas Eve, the shopping scene is expected to be a frenzied one.
With portable gadgets becoming as prevalent as they are, a laptop is sure to be on the wish list of a loved one. While some will be asking for a laptop primed for Windows 8, others may want to forego Microsoft’s latest OS for the moment until such time that a more thorough analysis of the program can be given. Till then, portable computers with “old-school” (such as they are) laptop parts and specs may be in order.
If you’re looking for one of those, here are some points to consider:

the wish list of a loved one. While some will be asking for a laptop primed for
Windows 8, others may want to forego Microsoft’s latest OS for the moment until
such time that a more thorough analysis of the program can be given. Till
then, portable computers with “old-school” (such as they are) laptop parts and
specs may be in order.
If you’re looking for one of those, here are some points to consider:
3. 1. The Weight
Portability is the point behind
laptops. Therefore, a laptop that
puts a lot of stress on your
shoulders would be
counterintuitive to the whole
point of the thing.
About 6 pounds of weight
should be enough. Any more
and you’re better off not
carrying it around a lot.
4. 2. The Size
Size should also factor into a laptop’s portability. Whether or not it weighs 6 pounds, if its
dimensions won’t allow it to fit inside a standard backpack, how would you be able to lug it
around conveniently?
Conversely, if the laptop’s screen is too small, you might as well be holding a tablet PC in
your hands.
To get that sweet spot size-wise, 13 inches should be the way to go.
5. 3. The Chipsets
A gaming PC should have powerful
laptop components installed to be able
to run the latest resource-hungry video
games.
For the casual user, laptop parts like an
Intel Core i3 processor and integrated
graphics should be adequate enough.
You may go a bit higher if you want to
(provided you have the cash, of
course), but high-end laptop
components might be overkill for most
practical uses.
6. 4. RAM
If there’s hardware that shouldn’t be
taken lightly, though, it should be the
laptop’s RAM. Speed is a premium
attribute when it comes to
computers, and at least 4 GB of RAM
should be more than sufficient for most
current programs. It also lets your
laptop remain future-proof for the next
couple of years.
7. 6. Optical Drives
While these laptop parts are certainly
handy to have, the trend of media
content becoming digital downloads, as
well as programs going the same
route, are slowly making optical drives
a thing of the past.
8. 7. The Price
And of course, the price should always
be a factor to think about; more so than
most factors for many people, actually.
$500 is good place to start with for 13-
inchers. You may go a bit higher than
that if your budget allows, but anything
more than $700 is already excessive.
